Oh, and on topic. Anything that 'rewards' people who pre-order is good in my books. So many times I pre-order, pay full price, then find out I could have got MORE for cheaper just a short while later. So this is a great idea, also helps get a small piece out of the resale segment. Seriously, some the same game getting resold at high prices multiple times? The game re-sellers should NOT be making more money out of a game than the developers.

Oh, it's THIS thread again, people complaining about getting free stuff.

Yes. Content developed alongside the main product that's only free with a pre order before the value of the product is known is the same as 'free content'. Don't post.

Funds probably taken from the DLC funding, content made after the game is complete but before launch and bonus content for practically free SHOULD be given out to everybody, including people who purchase second hand?

Probably taken from the DLC funding? What are you basing that on? How do you know Bioware has a special DLC fund they can draw on before launch? How on earth can you know how they fund each part of a project? You're chatting nonsense to make a nonsense point.

I agree with your dumb strawman point. It is just completely different to reality.

I have no problem with them marketing the character as exclusive to the preorder (although this seems to be a bit of a grey area)... but if I don't get this character when I buy a new copy from the store then it'll knock my faith a little (... a lot)

If...that...makes...sense?

Oh, yay, this again. I suppose you missed the ten million other threads where people argued over pre-ordering and the SE upgrade. You make it sound like people will be chained to this pre-order and forced to buy it, but hello, THERE'S PLENTY OF TIME TO CANCEL OUT as information is released closer to launch if there are actual warning signs of potential suckiness (rather than some inane theory like yours).

As for those of us who either like what we've seen thus far and/or who are confident that the game will turn out well, it's a non-issue. However, good luck with your one-man boycott. Enjoy not playing the game thanks to your belief that BW is doing this because they think their product sucks. Yeah, real convincing argument you had there...

Simple. We assume they're not idiots.

Anyone planning for a 2011 release knows that Day 1 DLC is going to be part of the business plan. They've been doing this for a couple of years, it's worked well, and it's now official EA policy to do it. You also would know, assuming you're not an idiot, that a Day 1 DLC has a different deadline from the boxed game. I'd explain why, but I'll assume for the moment that you're not an idiot either.

When drawing up the plan for Dragon Age 2, an idiot might  nevertheless just have one big category marked "Game," and figure that in a year or so someone would figure out how to split off some part of that content into a DLC without doing too much damage to the game proper. But a non-idiot would realize that the DLC ought to be a different project, since it has different revenues, a different deadline, different QA, and no shared dependencies with the main project.

Preorders affect how many copies stores order you muppet, so they do affect direct sales, and the preorder codes are inside the box so even if a person does cancel their preorder, they will still be penalised for doing so by missing out on a character. If you still can't grasp the legitimate issues with this plan and the concerns it raises for consumers and independent retailers then reread the OP.

And I never said the word boycott, Bioware are my favourite developers and I wish them every success. But ****ty practise is ****ty practise regardless of who does it.

I admit, I am baffled by your hostility. Does it really bother you that I used a double negative on purpose?

You didn't capitalize 'yea' in the above sentence, but I wouldn't take you to task for it.

Irregardless isn't a word. Though like any made up words (thank you Stephen Colbert for "truthiness"), if it gets used enough it'll become part of the official language so...go for it.

On topic: I share the OP's sentiments, though we (the forum) did already have a big discussion about it when the "Signature Edition" was first announced. The most logical solution that came out of that (and I certainly can't take any credit) was to pre-order the game, put your $5 down, and then wait for the reviews and such around release time. You generally have like two weeks to pick up your game at GameStop or you can decide to cancel and move the $5 to a different game.

International players...well you still might be screwed. Sorry.

AlanC9 you are equivocating like crazy and for all those words have posted no more evidence than the last guy. Either your convoluted reasoning is correct or it's cynical marketing affecting the quality of the product, protip it's the latter.

LOL at the people getting snitchy upset about using words on an internet forum where correct language proper articulation is rarely used.
Seriously? Next we'll be getting upset about using little emotes in posts.

Or ending posts in....

Edit: Oh and ... no BioWare is not getting shameless.  They're just getting business savvy. ;)

So you're worried about someone who preorders, cancels the preorder, and then decides he was foolish to cancel his preorder and buys the game anyway?
