New big studio games have been $50 since like 1994 at least
why shouldn't prices go up in 16 years?
I would expect them to go up in future generations.

I for one am in favor of Valve's DLC model on the PC- you buy the game, they support it with loads of updates and free DLC. Hoooooooray.

This is so funny. This is one of my favorite arguments for everything. I've heard students say it when they don't like the grade they got in a class they only attend part of the time. I'm paying your salary - I deserve an A. I deserve to be personally called and informed that advising week starts next Monday. I pay your salary..... And at the bank I worked at - I pay your salary what do you mean your closing because there is 10' of snow out. I want to come in and deposit my social security check. The only thing that phase gets you is a polite I'm sorry, but it doesn't work that way.
And as I've said before, I certainly like the idea of a character instead of a coin, but it really doesn't affect whether or not I'm going to pre-order a game. I pre-ordered Fable 3 I didn't pre-order Fallout Las Vegas, I'm going to be playing both of these games.
Yes, but either extreme is bad. On the one hand you have those that demand something or believe things should be done a certain way. They will never get their way because their one voice is meaningless. They are always hostile in this manner. But on the other end you have those that will mindlessly buy anything and everything thrown at them, without any prior consideration first. They act like they've been done a favor by being offered a product. They are hostile to those that do have considerations.
Is there a fair middle ground?

There's one big glaring fact that many people gloss over: if EA/BioWare wasn't making money releasing games in the fashion they do, they wouldn't do it. This means that, despite some vocal opposition to the pre-release bonus material, people are still buying it up and coming back for more. It's a mixture of quality work on Bio's part and lack of willpower on the part of gamers that makes it all possible.
As always, until a significant lot of potential customers exercise their power to keep their money, all the complaining in the world isn't going to be worth the finger-tapping it takes to type it out.

I understand for the reasons stated above that its not a simple matter of just plopping DLC on the disk the day before release, but I think its mostly a perception issue- that if you're too quick in shoving loads of extra content in someone's face too soon, or even before the game is out, then without knowing how the DLC process works, its easy to think as a consumer you're getting hosed over missing content that "should" have been in the game.
I think the relative amount of content and the length of the game may play a role too in that perception- if the game feels rushed, too short or incomplete and yet DLC is ready on Day 1, it induces the ol' skeptical face.

how would people feel if the game came with all the content but you had to pay $80 for the game?

Since Baldur's Gate, I've gotten literally hundreds of hours out of Bioware games. I can't think of a single game I haven't made at least two runs through.
It's a safe purchase for me.

First off. That's not an appropriate word.
Second. This is an important issue.

OK ... but what's the appropriate response to a perception issue? Since I don't share the perception I'm not qualified to answer this myself.

Agreed, but I think its a pretty safe bet that they will. They'd be leaving a lot of money on the table if they don't.

No, what's important is teaching the people who make these threads how the game development process works, even though the attempts seem to fall on deaf ears every time it's done.
@Sarah: What are you basing that on? inb4Shale
