New big studio games have been $50 since like 1994 at least

why shouldn't prices go up in 16 years?

I would expect them to go up in future generations.

I for one am in favor of Valve's DLC model on the PC- you buy the game, they support it with loads of updates and free DLC. Hoooooooray.

Valve is bringing microtransactions to Team Fortress 2.  I take this to mean free DLC will slow down.

This is so funny.  :D  This is one of my favorite arguments for everything.  I've heard students say it when they don't like the grade they got in a class they only attend part of the time.  I'm paying your salary - I deserve an A.  I deserve to be personally called and informed that advising week starts next Monday.  I pay your salary.....  And at the bank I worked at - I pay your salary what do you mean your closing because there is 10' of snow out.  I want to come in and deposit my social security check.    The only thing that phase gets you is a polite I'm sorry, but it doesn't work that way.

And as I've said before, I certainly like the idea of a character instead of a coin, but it really doesn't affect whether or not I'm going to pre-order a game.  I pre-ordered Fable 3 I didn't pre-order Fallout Las Vegas, I'm going to be playing both of these games.

Yes, but either extreme is bad. On the one hand you have those that demand something or believe things should be done a certain way. They will never get their way because their one voice is meaningless. They are always hostile in this manner. But on the other end you have those that will mindlessly buy anything and everything thrown at them, without any prior consideration first. They act like they've been done a favor by being offered a product. They are hostile to those that do have considerations.

Is there a fair middle ground?

Well, probably not.  I think those of us who don't really care one way or the other, the ones who would buy the pre-ordered game with or without the extras might be the middle ground and no one listens to the people in the middle.

There's one big glaring fact that many people gloss over: if EA/BioWare wasn't making money releasing games in the fashion they do, they wouldn't do it. This means that, despite some vocal opposition to the pre-release bonus material, people are still buying it up and coming back for more. It's a mixture of quality work on Bio's part and lack of willpower on the part of gamers that makes it all possible.

As always, until a significant lot of potential customers exercise their power to keep their money, all the complaining in the world isn't going to be worth the finger-tapping it takes to type it out.

QFT.
Sadly, the very same people who complain and cry, are the first ones in line to buy the game.

Since Baldur's Gate, I've gotten literally hundreds of hours out of Bioware games. I can't think of a single game I haven't made at least two runs through.

It's a safe purchase for me.

I understand for the reasons stated above that its not a simple matter of just plopping DLC on the disk the day before release, but I think its mostly a perception issue- that if you're too quick in shoving loads of extra content in someone's face too soon, or even before the game is out, then without knowing how the DLC process works, its easy to think as a consumer you're getting hosed over missing content that "should" have been in the game.
I think the relative amount of content and the length of the game may play a role too in that perception- if the game feels rushed, too short or incomplete and yet DLC is ready on Day 1, it induces the ol' skeptical face.

OK ... but what's the appropriate response to a perception issue? Since I don't share the perception I'm not qualified to answer this myself.

I think I've spent at least $70 before.  What's another $10.

Truthfully, I'd rather have everything on a cd instead of download.  It took around 5 hours to download the shadowbroker and if I ever need the extra room and take it off, then it will be another batch of hours to put it back on at some future date.    If I could get everything on a cd, I'd pay extra.

Me too.   I've been playing ME1 and 2 since they came out.  I still play KOTOR about every other year.  JE every couple of years and a few other's that I keep.   Say $60 for a game that I'll play for years.  That equals 6 $10 dinners.  Video games are a very good value for the dollar.  With our without extra content.

WOW, as soon as the other [person]'s thread went off the first page, we get a brand new one about the same thing.

First off. That's not an appropriate word.
Second. This is an important issue.

EDIT: Thank for being so kind as to fix that.

If people honestly believe content doesn't get cut to be used as DLC later on, they're more naive than I thought. It happens all the time these days.

I would rather pay $90 now with all the DLC and maps in shooters (that were probably finished content ommited to sell as DLC). Than pay $70, and slowly having another $30-40 being leaked out of my wallet, but by the time I realize that, a sequel would have already been released for me to buy (with day one DLC too!! No, what's important is teaching the people who make these threads how the game development process works, even though the attempts seem to fall on deaf ears every time it's done.

@Sarah: What are you basing that on?  inb4Shale

Agreed, but I think its a pretty safe bet that they will. They'd be leaving a lot of money on the table if they don't.

I don't understand the people who say these things about the industry when I am fairly certain they don't work in the industry at all. How can you presume to know these so-called grim facts of business reality when all you can do is sit on the sidelines?

I was reading about logical debate decorum in my ethical philosophy class today. One of the rules of argument is to always assume that you could be wrong - not that you are wrong, but to accept the possibility that you could be. I think it calms down a lot of anger. Kinda wish more people would subscribe to that thought, ya'know?

I think the DLC is a both a good business tactic and a nice bonus for the devoted fans. I am preordering DA2 because I have a considerable amount of consumer faith in BioWare. I love everything I've seen so far and they have never disappointed me. I also want to support good storytelling in video games. I think it's very nice to get a little something extra for my faith.

I don't think I should be condemned or cast out as an idiot for being loyal. That seems silly.

Probably will be at a DLC shop near you. I don't see why they would want to lose on more potential customers. I'm honestly starting to like the DLC shop as opposed to pre ordering because then I can pick what to pay for. That and none of my characters have actually worn the dragon armor, I sell it for fat coin instead...

@Goddess of Boobs:

"Contains the full version of Dragon Age II plus $20 of additional content including:

A download code for a bonus playable character and missions

Downloadable game soundtrack

Exclusive in-game digital armory featuring multiple weapons

Additional downloadable items"

The only thing exclusive is the armory. The character and missions are still going to be released.

Common sense and seeing this sort of thing happen more and more often. And no, it has nothing to do with Shale.

"Common Sense"

So in other words, you have no actual proof? Bioware has said time and time again that they don't cut content from the game to release as DLC, with the exception of Shale, who was free to everyone who bought the game anyway.
