I thought I had gained "access" to some equipment stored in the chest of theirs in the middle of the encampment - Zathrian gave their merchant the go-ahead to help me, who then told me about the chest - but when I try to open it up to get what's inside, Lanaya gets pissed off, threatens to rat me out (so to speak) to their keeper, then won't talk to me again.
Am I missing something here? Is what's in the chest important anyways?

dalish camp is very annoying.. i had same problem, and even the merchent didnt vendor to me anymore because i looted some other chest in his area. every time i wanted to sell. i had to travel to my own camp :S

She gave me a friendly warning the first time I bumbled into it, and after doing the Dalish/Werewolf arc on the happier Dalish side with Tuvok dead, she didn't seem to have a problem with me looting it at all. All it contained was a song book, with no apparent use, which I think contains the lyrics for the game's main theme.
After leaving their camp, I got ambushed by Dalish who were mightily pissed off I took it, and I had no choice but to kill them. Felt bad, and returned to their camp to sell it back to their merchant.

You guys need to buff your (Persuade) checks. The Dalish are paranoid of outsiders and you're told to watch yourself in camp. With high enough cunning, you can get what's in the box. You can also loot everything in the camp without annoying anyone.

I think you were looking in the wrong chest. The chest is behind the merchant, not the one near Lanaya and the leader.

Whatever you do don't try to pick pocket Lanaya, the whole camp will hate you if you fail.
Even with max steal skill I have never successfully stolen from her, though I admit I only tried around 5 reloads.
