This thread is for you to post fan fics that stand out, feel like true quality or originality. The best one I've seen so far is this Liara/MaleShep fan fic. Very thorough, with many ME characters involved some way or another.

shep/tali romance but doesn't go too heavy with it.
does great dealing with action sequences, and friendship/comraderie between squaddies and shep.
at the time it was the best fanfic i read but it was written before the shadow broker storyline came out so the story doesnt really fit now, but it's still a good read

this is anoher good one i've been reading. great action set in ME2(pretty much follows ME2 story from what i've read).
not finished but i've definitely enjoyed the first chapters i've read. Does outstanding job of describing the recruiting mission on haestrom from shep and reegar's POV

True, she's made a lot of good ones in the past but for some reason, this one just kind of stuck with me. It's set sometime after the final mission in Mass Effect 2 and Ashley and Shepard are aboard the new Normandy attempting to clear the air about what happened on Horizon and what kind of future their relationship is heading in.
As expected when you leave two people with strong emotional ties and a long period of time of sexual tension utterly alone together, things happen. As expected, they get uh, 'distracted' from having a conversation about their relationship, but do confirm their feelings for one another.
What I liked about it was that it was tasteful, unlike so many others that are blatant examples of overplaying the sex aspect of the story, here it's not described in any other way other than the emotional element. Similarly, it doesn't play out like a wish fullfilment fantasy or some celebration of how awesome the characters are or anything else that we see a lot in fan fiction.
In fact it quite nicely lingers on the notion of what kind of an emotional reunion this would actually be, in both having a real conversation with someone you loved who has come back, seemingly, from the dead.
Plus I like how when talking about the Horizon conversation Ashley isn't condemned for what she said, true Shepard taking all the blame for it does seem a little off but given the millions of stories about how Ashley was being a 'total b*tch so sheppard killed her lol' in regards to Horizon, it's nice to see her not being condemned for having a difficult reaction to seeing Shepard return on Horizon like that.
I guess what I'm saying is, this was a really very well thought out one. Emotionally engaging and respectful depictions of the characters. So for the most part, this is one I like to read about and reflect and hope that maybe, just maybe, Bioware would include a scene like this somewhere in future Mass Effects.
Some might accuse me of over praising it because it's a well written story that has Ashley displayed in a positive light instead of having Shepard insult her out of the room and then going off to cuddle Tali, but frankly, I'll take my victories where I can get 'em.

Great not only because of the ability to capture Tali and the admirals in character so well (not Prazza but nvm we only ever hear two lines from him in ME2 so in this he's kinda a made-up, and ridiculously horny character) but because the witty writing style is fantastic and is incredibly remiscent of the classic The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
A close second would be Reclaimation which would definately be the best visualisation of what happens after ME2. It's Tali/Shepard throughout though the plot doesn't revolve around them. The way the author keeps the characters in character is astounding. It scares me so much to think how much effort he went in to make the characters stay in character.
Also, Jacob calls Garrus "turian batman" at one point making the whole story.

Not only is sinvraal a fantastic and incredibly descriptive writer, but she puts a lot of small things in the universe dealing with technology and slang and politics and sociology that not even the games themselves touch on, and which give the entire universe a realistic coherence that sets it right up there with the great sci-fi universes.

An exceedingly well written and ongoing femshep/samara fanfic. Blanks from the game are filled in and Shepard is made realistically Human throughout; makes it all feel very real.

The Letter Game Revisited
I prefer fanfiction without Shepard or a Shepard with no first name mentioned.

Anyways, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I assume it's very bad form to plug my own, so I shall not.

The second one stars the delightful Ms. Chambers, and is rated M for a Very Good Reason, hence I'm not linking it. (If you're not smart enough to work out how to find it on your own, eh. Just 'eh'.)

I'm writing my own, but I'm having a serious time managing pacing and character continuity/development. Trying to introduce the new protagonist while tying it in with established characters is a delicate dance. You can't override existing characters or it feels like a retcon. But I'm trying not to have it so the protag has no effect on their life.
An enjoyable challenge though, and it's nice to see these ones looking so good, reminds me to keep going.
Well, it's nice to see someone in the same boat as me! Well, I'm not establishing any new characters, but I'm generally having the same problem, with figuring out pacing and development.
The fic that inspired me to continue to plot this is one by sagequeen, a user on here. She usually graces the FemShep and Kaidan forums. Her's are a series on her FemShep, Kyrie, detailing Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and inbetween the two games. http://www.fanfictio...1169/1/Valkyrie

Holding on to Let Go.
*that author, Kane Lam has some other good ones too*
Rise Above or Sink Below.
Blue Light *this one doesn't follow the proper ME1/ME2 timeline but it's still good.
Constellations
There's more I like with this pairing, but are one shots or unfinished. If anyone is interested in more FemShep/Liara, pm me and I can hook you up with links.

I wrote a few though. First one was really half baked (a product of insomnia rather than an overriding desire to write) but my second one I generally consider superior in every way. I try to straddle the line between campy and character development in it, and I believe I succeeded for the most part.
I've been told it has good pacing up until the last chapter and the epilogue.
EDIT: Links in my sig. If you actually read it, please comment.
That'd be Greeaat.

I loved what the author did with both Liara and Shepard's characterizations. Never thought a slightly Renegade Shep would work so well like that, but I guess that's just the author working her magic.
Yeah, I think I've read that one multiple times b/c it's awesome!
IIRC, 'Blue Light' contains a more Renegade Shepard too, so you might want to give that one a try (if you didn't already)...like I said, it doesn't follow the game's timeline (it takes place one year after ME1 and Shepard is still alive), but it's still a good read, IMO.
I can't think of any more Renegade Shep's off the top of my head (with Liara), but I do plan to write one in the future, when I finish my Paragade Shepard's story.

Sometimes, divergence from canon is good. It's nice to see people's interpretations of what they think should/could happen after ME, but not going into the beginning of ME2 with Shep dying and all that.

FemShep/Liara, set during the events of ME1. It depicts the development of the relationship between the two characters, and how they ultimately fell in love with each other. Fantastically well-written, and I'm eager to read subsequent updates to the story.
