So do you have to be a goody two shoes and go out of your way to help people to rival Isabela? I think I will try that with my good girl Zoe Hawke. I thought there was a different lovescene for the rivalry romance or am I mistaken?

It seems you have to be a boring ole fuddy duddy and do quests for solely the benefit of others while refusing monetary rewards.

I've not been able to gain significant rival points with Isabela myself....I will try next game when I go for the rival romance.

So can anyone actually confirm that it's even possible to have a rivalmance with Izzy?

The official guidebook expressly says you can't, but in this thread, Sheryl Chee posted that she's fairly certain that she wrote rivalmance dialogue and the guidebook may be wrong.

Basically, I get the impression that we were supposed to be able to rivalmance Izzy, but I'm wondering if her rivalmance path is glitched and cannot be completed as of now?  Anybody actually done it?

Turning the elf child murdering bastard into the autorities is a nice 15 rivalry bonus. It's very possible to reach 75 % rivalry before the end of the first act.

I did find it interesting that in act 2, there's two different scenes near the start with Anders. If you haven't romanced Isabela, she's in there getting clinical help for a social disease. If you have, however, it's Seneschal Bran, and Anders makes a comment about pirates docking in unsavory places. Jealous much?

It's still Isabela who shows up for me when I romance her.

I love how you get approval from Izzy if you visit a prostitute.

Sex must come before visiting Anders.

There's another scene a bit before that one where Isabela visits Fenris about the Seneschal. She basically slept with the guy to keep him from snooping around Fenris' business.

Okay I tested it, you can have a rivalmance with Izzy. It's just harder in my opinion, you have to be a true Hero, doing everything right.
She will later admit after Castillion confrontation that she was wrong and selfish and want to be a better person for Hawke.

Oh and I could get her killed in the Rose scene, I just want to test what happens if you kill Castillion.

Ugh, I wouldn't touch lawful good with a 10" pole. Not worth it. Glad you can have one though. I'll put it on the todo list.

See! I'm not the only one. Like I said, I tried doing it.  I lasted til act 2 when I had the first convo with Isabela and she basically acused me of being Aveline and I was like... OMG, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?

I quit, straight away.

lmao. Yeah the mature/respectful/moral option all the time turns you into a Sebastian willing to have sex.

It's truly the most boring game play. Once an awhile I'll choose a respectful/moral option. But 9/10 I just go with my charming/sarcastic option.

Idk, I played mostly diplomatic options and I maxed out Isabela by the end of act 1/ beginning of act 2, no problems. Varric too!

Thanks for doing that.  Good to know.

Thanks everyone for the answers about Leliana. I guess I'll have to splurge and buy the DLC. (Have to get my Leliana hit somehow!)

But back to Isabela...

Is it just me, or is there some kind of subtext going on between Isabela and Aveline? I listened to their banter, and maybe I'm just overly sensitive, but it's almost affectionate hostility - which is more prominent later on in the game than earlier.

My personal interpretation is that they start off with a sort of mutual inferiority complex.

Isabela implies multiple times (banter with Merrill, conversation with Hawke) that she's not proud of the life she has, and at times I can almost feel her yearning for social acceptance. Aveline, captain of the guard, accomplished warrior and happily married woman (twice!), embodies the things Izzy wants, or thinks she wants.

Aveline, on the other hand, is jealous of Isabela because she feels less feminine next to her (at least that's how I interpreted most of their interactions, especially stuff like "How are you so successful with men? You're not that attractive." and "Too soon, too personal,too... everything coming from you!").

However, as the game progresses, they learn to accept and respect each other and appreciate themselves for what they are.

Or maybe I'm just rambling.

The only funny thing about it was the Questioning Beliefs dialogue.
Isabella: "Is there a burning orphanage full of children we need to save, or something?"
Hawke looking really pathetic: "Did you hear something about that?"
Isabella sighs: "I was joking. You still know what a joke is, right?"

You don't have to be a goody goody in that dialouge though. This much I know. You can go on the offensive and call her out on being a selfish loser. :wizard:

so..just reached act 3...first talk to Isabela in the Hanged Man and she rejoins...am i still on the path of romance if i get no flirt option and not one of the dialogues say something about it..well just one where Hawke says he still cares about her ?
most of the talk is how Hawke's actions made her come back with the relic or something like this...
Hope i didn't do something wrong here

Read the codex entry for her after talking. If it says something about how she says not to read too much into it, no romance. If it says something about how it was for you and not the others, it's the romance.

I do like the Aveline and Isabela relationship because it grows as the game goes on.These women hate each other at first, always arguing, bickering and insulting each other. Hell there was two times where a cat fight would have broken out if Hawke did not intervene. However in act 3, they are almost friends, they still bicker at each other but it's less hostile then before.

I've been playing a LG/Noble Hawke this play through, but I'm 50% of the way to Friendly with Isabela. I must be doing something wrong. :?
