I've not been able to gain significant rival points with Isabela myself....I will try next game when I go for the rival romance.

The official guidebook expressly says you can't, but in this thread, Sheryl Chee posted that she's fairly certain that she wrote rivalmance dialogue and the guidebook may be wrong.
Basically, I get the impression that we were supposed to be able to rivalmance Izzy, but I'm wondering if her rivalmance path is glitched and cannot be completed as of now? Anybody actually done it?

It's still Isabela who shows up for me when I romance her.hoorayforicecream wrote...
I did find it interesting that in act 2, there's two different scenes near the start with Anders. If you haven't romanced Isabela, she's in there getting clinical help for a social disease. If you have, however, it's Seneschal Bran, and Anders makes a comment about pirates docking in unsavory places. Jealous much?

She will later admit after Castillion confrontation that she was wrong and selfish and want to be a better person for Hawke.
Oh and I could get her killed in the Rose scene, I just want to test what happens if you kill Castillion.

Being a noble Hero sucks, I wont do it again, I feel so dirty now
See! I'm not the only one. Like I said, I tried doing it. I lasted til act 2 when I had the first convo with Isabela and she basically acused me of being Aveline and I was like... OMG, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?
I quit, straight away.

It's truly the most boring game play. Once an awhile I'll choose a respectful/moral option. But 9/10 I just go with my charming/sarcastic option.

Thanks for doing that. Good to know.kumquats wrote...
Okay I tested it, you can have a rivalmance with Izzy. It's just harder in my opinion, you have to be a true Hero, doing everything right.

Thanks everyone for the answers about Leliana. I guess I'll have to splurge and buy the DLC. (Have to get my Leliana hit somehow!)
But back to Isabela...
Is it just me, or is there some kind of subtext going on between Isabela and Aveline? I listened to their banter, and maybe I'm just overly sensitive, but it's almost affectionate hostility - which is more prominent later on in the game than earlier.
My personal interpretation is that they start off with a sort of mutual inferiority complex.
Isabela implies multiple times (banter with Merrill, conversation with Hawke) that she's not proud of the life she has, and at times I can almost feel her yearning for social acceptance. Aveline, captain of the guard, accomplished warrior and happily married woman (twice!), embodies the things Izzy wants, or thinks she wants.
Aveline, on the other hand, is jealous of Isabela because she feels less feminine next to her (at least that's how I interpreted most of their interactions, especially stuff like "How are you so successful with men? You're not that attractive." and "Too soon, too personal,too... everything coming from you!").
However, as the game progresses, they learn to accept and respect each other and appreciate themselves for what they are.
Or maybe I'm just rambling.

Isabella: "Is there a burning orphanage full of children we need to save, or something?"
Hawke looking really pathetic: "Did you hear something about that?"
Isabella sighs: "I was joking. You still know what a joke is, right?"

The only funny thing about it was the Questioning Beliefs dialogue.

You don't have to be a goody goody in that dialouge though. This much I know. You can go on the offensive and call her out on being a selfish loser.

most of the talk is how Hawke's actions made her come back with the relic or something like this...
Hope i didn't do something wrong here
