I just read something on Dragon Age Wiki about our girl.....

Isabela's comments in one of her Act III companion quests involving a fertility necklace, suggest that she is barren, an area of sadness and resentment for her. This would explain why her numerous sexual encounters never resulted in conception.

Oh gods, I'm so tired of the "I'm barren, therefore I must want a child and be sad that I'm barren" trope. Not every woman wants a child, for Maker's sake!!* (And why would Isabela of all people want a kid?!) <_<

*Throws a tvtropes page into the thread* there: Law of Inverse Fertility (WARNING: TVtropes is dangerous to your health!)

*Yes, this is a very raw nerve for me. Especially since I've been told since the age of 13 that I'd change my mind about kids. I haven't and never will.

Really? It;s funny what you read into things. I read it as:  "Rivaini fertility necklace that is meant to increase fertility and bring about love."

Enphasis is mine. I was romancing her on my Lady Hawke though, not much of any fertilising going on there.

I figured anti-pregnancy measures existed in Thedas somewhere, and Isa's a smart enough woman to know exactly what measures and precautions to take.

Buh? Posted Image

Let's say someone from another culture gave me a string of lion teeth. And let's say in my culture, a string of lion teeth is meant to increase the virility of men, and the size of their... feet. I'd say to them, "Ahaha. Did you not know that in my culture, this increases virility and foot size?  You joker, you."

Does not mean I want bigger feet.

Re: Lying face down in a ditch.

You know, I never thought about the nasty implications of this. I wrote that thinking Isabela's recommending a ditch for you to lie face down drunk in. As in, you two could go get drunk together, have some giggles and spend the night passed out in a ditch.

Yeah, she finds that fun. I dunno, the girl's not all there.

I'd love to see a Isabella rivalry conversation guide considering the "thumb's up" bug that is plaguing all my play throughs. I have to start over and am having trouble getting her to 50+ rivalry.

What's funny is I look at that screenshot and the thing that bugs me the most is the atrocious Blood Dragon Armor.

Use the Dragon Age wiki and look up each quest before you do it.

If you see options for Isabela +Rivalry, take her along.  If you only see +Friendship, don't.  If it doesn't matter then... it doesn't matter.  Furthermore save any gifts until you're clearly on the Rivalry path, and then they will increase Rivalry.

That's how I took it. But then again not everyone finds going out just for the sake of getting as pissed as you can and finding out the next day what happened as fun. Each to their own. :innocent:

I liked the Hurricane and Ditch comments simply because I had to pause a moment after hearing them.

"If you're looking for a ditch to lie face down in, I can recommend you one."

"You remind me of a sailor I knew. We lost him in a hurricane. Very sad."

Oh, yes. The first comment I took to be a threat of violence, and the second I thought to be an... off-color remark.

There's nothing friendly or affectionate about telling someone you could find them a ditch to lie in, why were the fun parts not included in the dialogue? And for it to be like you're saying it would be "find us"" a ditch not "find you" a ditch. Plus apparently nobody told Victoria Kruger about the positive spin on it when she acted it.

And I can't think of a positive spin on "I once knew a sailor like you, we lost him in a hurricane... very sad", its obvious sarcasm, the character saying she wouldn't care if you died. And its just an annoying line to hear all the time.

Those two lines were my least favorite part of the game, no exaggeration. Really annoying. I would pay money to have them patched out of the game.

You can make it up to me with some Isabela and Hawke pirate ship DLC though. ;)

And really, even assuming the DLC takes place around Kirkwall as would be easiest to pull off, if it doesn't include any dialogue on the Isabela and Hawke romance, I don't think it'd be worth getting in my book. I'd want a DLC mainly to further the characters, not to have just another side quest.

Isabela should totally at least be in Hawke's mansion with him in the post-game.

I do the Zev quest and give her the last gift at the start of Act 3 so it does not feel strange. Tho I do like if you romance her you can tell her no about sex with Zev or join. Non romance you just stand there and wait for Zev and Isabela to finish.

Thanks for clarifying that. I never found the necklace, so I never saw the conversation first hand. I was just going off what Prince of Kemet had written. :)

Why must she "settle" for Hawke? Why must Hawke *change* her, why can't Hawke change for her? Oh right, because you're the protagonist. She can't be allowed to be her own person if you dislike it, you'd have to change it. If you want somebody that isn't hedonistic or free spirited, don't romance Isabela.

Last I checked, characters were interesting because who they are and not because of how much you want to mold them.

This post is a month old, but I found it interesting. I like character development, and I dig the Hawke/Isabela romance, though I would've liked more focus on it. The way I played it and look at it, I think they'd both change their lives by being together. While Isabela would no longer be sleeping with random people, Hawke decides to leave Kirkwall and go with her on her pirate ship adventures. So they're both changing their lives, and probably both happier.

I didn't find the hurricane comment to be sexual or sarcastic.

Aveline said Isabela doesn't have two thoughts to rub together. I disagree with that, but her thought process is lazily chaotic most of the time and then very focused when she's doing something she enjoys.

Sort of your classic thrill seeker.

If Aveline were making the comment, you'd get, "You remind me of a sailor I once knew. He was great at getting into trouble and even better at getting out of it. Except for that last time."

It's a singular, cohesive statement about Hawke with a clear message. After all, when Aveline talks, it's for a specific purpose.

With Isabela, you're getting a loose collection of thoughts that's only connection to Hawke is that he or she sparked them. Hawke reminds her of someone - why? It might be a meaningful connection or not. It doesn't matter because she's mentally moved on to his death. Which was in a hurricane. What does the hurricane have to do with anything? It doesn't matter because she's now recalling her emotional reaction to the death.

The problem comes when you listen to off-the-cuff comments and attempt to find a coherent message about Isabela's view of Hawke.

At most, it suggests that if Hawke died, Isabela would be sad.

Again, if you listen to her comments about Lowtown (which is where she says this) and her general tendencies to thrill seeking and mayhem, it's easy to see why Isabela might view being face down in a ditch as a sign of having had a wicked fun time.

She's probably spent more than a few nights puking in alleyways before stumbling into a ditch and sleeping there until noon. Occasionally she'd wake up to someone trying to rob her, she'd stab them and then roll over again to sleep another hour or two.

What some people would call "the worst night of my life," Isabela might call "a good time."

I agree the VA might not have known what to do with it. Her delivery was fairly neutral. It didn't strike me as a threat, however, because Victoria always emotes far more when Isabela is hostile.

While I can respect your take on it, to me they're just bad dialogue lines, especially to hear on a repeated basis. And I can't take Isabela flatly saying "very sad" at face value as you do. Plus I loved how in Origins you'd actually get nicer and more affectionate dialogue when clicking on your love interest later on. I don't want these vague weird and in my opinion negative lines again and again.

Isabela is best! For real Bioware, make sure you give us Isabela fans something with the DLC. :D

I didn't like this bit.  Called me old fashion but I like a bit of monogomy in a game as well.  Maybe I did the romance the wrong way round.  Do the Zev bit then give her last gift and then end with the pub scene rather than the other way around.

I just didn't like the fact she said she's fallen for me but then quite happy to go and have sex with Zev or having me telling her no.

I think she's one of the best characters in the game but that bit I really didn't like.  If that's the way she is regardless of how much she's fallen for you then I'll keep it as a friendship and cut out the romance as I like having her in my party.

What does Isabella say while Hawke is busy looking for his mother's killer?

"I just found this amazing hat shop in Lowtown!"

Oh Isabella...
