I saw on one of the forums (can't find it right now) that if you start the isabela romance and then switch to merrill and have her move in it triggers a slightly different version of the party banter between merrill and isabela which makes it sound like isabela is happy for merrill but somewhat regretful of the way things turned out. Anyone have the quote by any chance?

Well that's a lie. Who would ditch Isabela for Merrill?

You can also go back to The Hanged Man and talk to Isabela after 'mancing Merrill where she tells you if you break her heart she'll cut off your balls.hoorayforicecream wrote...
I've heard it. It goes something like this:
Isabela: You and Hawke... something's there, isn't there?
Merrill: He's clever, strong, and wonderful. How can anyone not love him?
Merrill: She's so amazing and beautiful. How could anyone not love her? (if Hawke is female)
Isabela: Yes, how could anyone... not?
Isabela: I'm happy for you, Kitten. Really. You deserve it.
There's definitely some wistful/sad inflection from Victoria Kruger's delivery in the "How could anyone not?" line. It's the flag that warned me something was wrong on that playthrough.
I didn't really intend for this to happen. This was before I knew that sleeping with either Anders or Merrill would end any other romances I had going on, even if you turn them down afterwards (which I did). Merrill got way too clingy after a romp in the hay, that totally scared me.

Edit: Rather than double post, I kind of wish there was more actual... touching over the course of the game. To kind of help indicate that the characters are in a relationship, you know? Not necessarily in the regular scenes, but wherever the relationship is involved. So, for example...
When your love interest shows up to comfort you after Leandra is killed. Holding hands, or an arm around the shoulder.
When you rescue your love interest from the kidnappers in act 3. A hug maybe?
I always thought it was a little awkward that Isabela showed up to comfort Hawke and only sat beside her.

Agreed. Though in the one scene after Leandra's death I believe Hawke comments that Isabela isn't that good at emotional stuff. Which at that point is probably true. Seemed like she (isablea) was trying to figure it out. The thing Isabela can say after that along the lines of "There are people who care for you...like...Aveline" fits in with that. But later on and for all companions in general, it would have been nice to see more little simple interactions. It's the little stuff that really brings characters to life.
Luckly never got that dialog when I romanced Merrill as a ladyhawkeSilentmode wrote...

Your LI gets kidnapped? Is that for mages only? Cause Bethany has been the one kidnapped on my first two playthroughs.hoorayforicecream wrote...
She makes no such comment with FemHawke (which I play), just asks Hawke to look after Merrill even if you tell Isabela she's your only. Oddly, it appears that you only get a flirt option with Isabela if you romance Merrill. If you go with the boys, there is none (not sure if this is just my game or overall).
