#1. Sibling
#2. Love Interest, if not in party.
#3. Person with highest friendship in group that is not in party
In my playthrough, I purposely let the sibling die to see what would happen with the kidnapping. There's also a slight difference in the post-death Leandra quest (All That Remains) if Hawke is the only one left.

HOW do you keep Izzy in your group after To Catch a Thief?
In both games she runs off with the book never to return. For my second playthrough I thought it had to be due to a low friendship level the first time, so I had her over 50% friendship the second time...and nope, still took off.

You just need to go to the tavern in Act 2 to talk to her once she is at 50% or higher either way. There should be a notification in the journal. This is her mid-point dialogue. She'll say "I like you, you're fun!" (paraphrased) if you're friends, or "You're an insufferable bore, go away." (paraphrased) if you're rivals. You have to do this conversation with her, or she won't come back.
Thank you, that helps. I must have missed that conversation this playthrough

Throughout the game, those two really seem to be best buddies forever. They've really bonded. I really like those two. And, for once, Isabela isn't targeting Merrill up for sex which is really sweet. They have a very sisterly relationship.

I don't think it's a lack of attraction. Her danger sense probably tingles around Merrill.HolyJellyfish wrote...

Merrill seems a bit too naive to make sex fun for Isabela though.

In my codex it had - Isabela left saying she "came back for Hawke not for them". AND Isabela said she "came back for Hawke because she likes Hawke". I mean I had TWO entries in the same codex saying two different things - what I'm wondering is... is a glitch or my fault? I didn't romance anyone else - I didn't even flirt with anyone else, I picked the 'what about love' option after the sex scene... really what did I do wrong? The weird thing is at the end of the game I got the Romantic achievement for Isabela's romance, so obviously it ended fine but I just don't get the 'two entries in the codex contradicting each other' thing. Anyone have this happen to them?
Also, I'm wondering... Since Isabela objects to Hawke fighting one on one with the Arishok, if I did the group fight would that change the codex entry? I still got friendship points with 'Bela for fighting the Arishok but I wonder if that affects why she doesn't come back to Kirkwall until three years later when Act 3 starts.

I have no problem seeing Merrill as a quick learner and Isabela's probably good at communicating what's fun for Isabela.

I have a question about the romance with Isabela - or more like a question about glitches/bugs for the romance. After the Arishok fight (which my rogue went into single combat with him) and the beginning of Act 3 when you can go and talk to Isabela in the Hanged Man - there is a codex entry that states Isabela - After the Qunari or Relic or something. Anyway.

It's a bug with the codex entry. There's two possible entries, one for a non-romanced Isabela, and one for a romanced one. That's why they seem so similar. You only get the one where she says "You're reading too much into it." if she is not romanced. You get both if she is.
If you refuse to duel the Arishok, the codex is unchanged. She still disappears for a good while, and then reappears.

Thank you, I wasn't sure what was going on. So you get both entries in the codex if she is romanced? Good Lord, that's a weird ass bug.
Just making sure it wasn't gamer error. :/
I aprreciate the info, gracias!

Then when I was sitting in my Architecture lecture today I was thinking "Hmm I wonder if she was seriously going through withdrawal, and I wonder if that goes for all the the romances?"
I know I could definitely use some Isabela banter to help me put up with some of the people at uni

Merrill: Why are you smiling?
Isabela: No reason.
Merrill: Ooh, ooh! It's something dirty, isn't it? Tell me! Tell me!
Isabela: It...it isn't anything dirty. I'm just...happy.
Merrill: Oh. That's good, too. But I was hoping for something dirty.
Isabela: Come by the tavern later. I've got stories that will make your toes curl.
It doesn't seem like it at first glance, but if you think about it a bit more, it makes more sense that it is.

Another one if I can remember correctly is Merrill asks Isabela what she is going to do when everything is all over, and I can't remember the banter exactly but she says she'll leave 'if she can convince a certain someone to come along with her'
I think it's the main reason why I have Merrill around during Act 3, just to hear all the romance banter between the two of them

I even saved before I got that banter and then reloaded it from time to time just to hear this.
And the one that Merrill says Hawke likes Isabela! Awesome stuffs! I mean, sweet stuffs!

I found the exact quotage for that. There's actually two variants on this banter, a romance and a non-romance.
Merrill: Do you think you'll leave Kirkwall some day?
Isabela: I might if I can persuade the right person to come away with me. (Romance)
Isabela: Of course I will! As soon as I get myself a ship, I'm sailing wherever the sea takes me. (Non-romance)
Merrill: I'll miss you. You'll write to me, won't you? Do pirates write letters?
Isabela: Badly. Hook hands make for awful penmanship, Kitten.

You my friend are a champ! That's it! I think it's safe to say that all of us here prefer the Romance dialogue
