Is it necessary to have her in the group to build up enough rivalry/friendship points to ensure she won't leave with the Tome of Koslun? Or is it just enough to do her quests and thats it.
Specific quests really. If you have her around constantly you could be more likely to get Rivalry while wanting Friendship or the opposite. In other words getting a deficit you don't need. It's very specific. Much like say Fenris and others who will be happy about some decisions and angry about others. The main difference is Rivaini's crisis point is in Act 2 so unlike the others? You don't get a bunch of extra points before the others may ditch you in Act 3.
Either way at the very least take her with you into the fade. Forgive her for friendship. Don't for Rivalry.

It is possible to get enough friendship to keep her around if you choose the correct conversation options during the act 1 quest "Isabela's Contact", but this also requires that you give her the ship gift, flirt with her at the beginning of act 2 and sleep with her. This may endanger a Fenris romance.
It is not possible to obtain sufficient rivalry without taking her with you for a significant number of quests. For more in-depth friendship/rivalry gains, take a look at the Isabela FAQ in my sig.

Aye and the hardest part is you are forced some specific Friendship gains that starts to put the Rival to a deficit to catch up. Rival is the hardest path just because Izzy is not a hater. She just apparently doesn't like to be told to pick locks or disable traps.

You're only really forced to take the rivalry deficit if you want to romance her as a rival. If you just want her as a rival in general, there's no deficit. Rivalry-romancing her is pretty difficult; I think that's what most people use my FAQ for.

I assumed it's what he's doing. Otherwise he probably wouldn't have needed to ask the question. It's pretty easy to ****** her off or get her to like you before act 2. Flirting and what not is where you can start to fall behind. Though either way one of the bigger ones is using her in the fade definitely is a big bonus. Since she is the only crisis so early on.

I was thinking, couldn't one just skip the infamous +25 Friendship flirt option and then activate Izzy's romance through the developer console?
On the PC, yes. However, not everyone has the console available (360, PS3). Some folks also consider it cheating to do so, which is one reason I wrote the FAQ.

How does one activate the developer console? Inquiring minds wish to know. (For DA:O it involved altering an ini file, and a specific toggle when running the program...)
It's the exact same as before. Clicky for more info.

You get +25 friendship for flirting with her!?
Damn.
Yup why many who are first messing around with her can lose her by act 2. If you bring her everywhere and get this combo of both rival and freindship and more importantly don't take her into the fade on top of it? Could easily risk. Making her a friend is easy. Rival can be tricky.

If you take her or anyone for that, on the right quest and you can easy Max her out in friendship I was actually suprised to see that add to the fact that I didnt romance her.
But what they said is true flirting with Isabela at any point nets you ALOT of points, in my previous playthrough where I romanced her, I got 20+ friendship when first talking to her at the start of Act 2, and in the next talk I got another 25+ and I was like "Wow, it almost feels like Im cheating."
Gotta ask though, Fenris as Red wristband in his right hand if you romance him, that represents his dedication or feelings toward Hawke add the fact that he carries the Hawke family crest too.
So I thought that when I saw Isabela romance outfit (after getting of the bug) she also had a Red armbrand so Im guessing that represent something to her, though what I havent figure out yet.

Would any of you believe I was able to Max 100% Friendship in my current playthrough shortly after the start of Act 2? And Im on the PS3 so no console/mods involved.

It isn't hard to believe at all. Isabela has 95 available friendship points in Act 1. Now, if you said that you maxed her rivalry shortly at the beginning of act 2, I'd be impressed.
As for the red armband, I don't know. The writers have gone on record saying that the red wristband is "Hawke's favor" to Fenris. I'm not sure whether Isabela's armband is a similar situation.

Ok I slept with both Isabela and Merill but I told Merill it was just a fling. Will the game recognize Isabela as the romance???
When I did that, it was over with Isabela. Some have reported that they were able to finish the romance. Merrill and Anders are the unstoppable romantic juggernauts though, typically if you go with either of them, all bets are off.

I just got to Zevran and you were right about the romance ending.
So it's right for her to sleep around but when I do it, it's over.
I guess I'll have to just reject Merill.

Part of it is because Hawke has to show her that her old way of life wasn't all it's cracked up to be and get her to open up. Most of it is that Isabela loves Merrill like a sister, so she'll totally back off if Merrill is interested (there's even a special banter for this. Merrill says "How can anyone not love him/her?". Isabela says "Yes, how could anyone... not?" "Did I do something wrong?" "No, I'm glad you found happiness, Merrill."). If you romance Anders, I think Isabela probably thinks Hawke's a little too crazy for her.
Merrill, you crazy romantic juggernaut you. Smashing everything in your way...
