here's a bit about isabela from chris priestly and the development team:

To help you better understand Isabela as a character, here is a short story written by the Dragon Age 2 Development team.

Isabela

The woman that walks into the Hanged Man is a sight, bedraggled and scruffy, like a rat that’s been soaking in the bilge for a week. Her ripped, weather-beaten smock is stained with soot from Lowtown’s chimneys and her boots, while of fine leather, are well-worn and crudely patched in a number of places. Her bearing, however, is proud, even arrogant, and she strides into the tavern like she owns the place.

“They told me I could get a drink here,” she says, coming toward the bar with a singular purpose. She slaps a half-dozen silver coins onto my counter. “What’ll this get me?”

“It’ll get you drunk enough,” I say.

“Then keep the liquor coming till the coin runs out. And make it strong.”

I wipe a chipped clay tumbler with my apron and fill it with the tavern’s most potent brew. She snatches it from my hand before I’m done pouring, and downs the drink in one gulp.

“You really needed that, didn’t you?” I pour her another drink.

“You have no idea.” She sighs and rubs her temples.  “They call me Isabela, by the way. You might as well learn the name. I think I’m going to be here a while.”

It doesn’t take long for a foul-smelling longshoreman to show up. Isabela stiffens as she feels a hand, low on her back. The longshoreman opens his mouth to say something, but never gets the chance. Isabela grabs the man by the wrist, twisting his arm behind him. His cry is one of shock rather than pain, but that quickly changes as Isabela rams her elbow into the back of the neck, slamming his face into the wooden bar-top.

“Touch me again, and I’ll break more than just these,” she hisses in his ear. And then she snaps the fingers of the offending hand. I hear a crunch, several sickening pops, and a howl of pain. The longshoreman slinks away, cradling his hand and spitting curses.

“What?” she says, holding the empty tumbler out for a refill and daring me to make a comment, any comment. I gesture towards her striking outfit—nothing but a chemise worn without the benefit of a jacket or cloak, covering only the barest minimum required for decency. Put on something like that, and you’re going to get attention whether you want it or not.

“What? This?” She picks at the laces on her bodice, then lets out a short, bitter laugh. “Would’ve   dressed up for you, but I left all my polite clothes at the bottom of the ocean.”

As I ponder the meaning of that statement, one of a group of Lowtown ruffians sidles up to the bar. He smirks, greasy lips sliding over yellow teeth in an expression that’s more grimace than smile. “I’m Lucky,” he says.

“Is that a name, or a description?” she asks, not even looking at him.

“It’s both. And If you’re new in Kirkwall, you’ll want to talk to me. My boys and I know everything going on in this town.”

“You know,” says Isabela, coldly. “I once knew a dog named Lucky. Obnoxious little thing, and too stupid to know when he was two yaps away from a kick in the side.”

Lucky turns beet red, and glances at his mates for moral support. Lucky’s boys jeer and laugh, offering no support whatsoever, and Lucky beats a hasty retreat. Isabela plays with the clay tumbler, turning it around this way and that, examining its numerous imperfections. Her eyes narrow.

“Wait,” she says suddenly. “If you know everything going on in Kirkwall, maybe we should talk.”

Lucky nods and grins. Isabela turns to him and I catch a mischievous glint in her eye.

“You see,” she says, smiling for the first time. “I lost something in a shipwreck, and I’d like for it to be found.”

this thread is for the people who want to discuss and speculate the character of Isabella and her involvement in the story of DA2 and not just to discuss about her appearance.
fanart is appreciated though
i for one am hoping to see her ship and meet her crew if we get the chance.

The Felicisima Armada is not without its female captains, and among them Isabela is among the most notorious. Once captain of the "Siren's Call", shortly after the Blight ended her ship was caught in a storm in the Waking Sea. It was destroyed, and Isabela washed ashore at the Wounded Coast, feeling lucky to have escaped with her life. Now she's stranded in the Free Marches, spending most of her time in the Hanged Man tavern while she attempts to find another ship to command so she can rejoin the Armada. Those who speak to her in the tavern will likely get a story of her adventures in Rivain when she was very young, or the years she spent as a sailor in Antiva, or even the time she spent masquerading as a priestess aboard an Imperial freighter... how many of these tales are true is anyone's guess, and Isabela's laughing smirk tells them that she doesn't care what they think. She's a pirate and will one day be again, and all someone really needs to know is that when Isabela's dagger is at their throat they can let her do all the talking.

Note: Isabela is not part of the Felicisima Armada. She is familiar with and has worked with people from the Armada, but would not consider herself one of them. The Armada is Antivan.

"I win because I cheat, Kitten. I thought that was obvious."Isabela is the pirate scourge of two coastlines, four nations, and countless tavern floors. She's equally skilled with dagger and insult, and it's hard to know which cuts deeper. It's rare to see her in one place for long, but with her ship reduced to timbers, Isabela's had to content herself with whatever bounty Kirkwall has to offer. And that means no end of headaches for the rich and foolish, and no end of amusement for her. She's as desired as she is feared, which is to say, a lot and often. Fall on her blade, or at her feet—a win is a win, in her book. Shipwrecked, hounded, Isabela hasn't decided if she's cornered yet. She's having too much fun.

A bit of info on isabela's personality from Sheryl

me: Out of curiosity, was it challenging to write for isabela even though it must have been fun as heck?

Sheryl:Not really. She has a very assertive personality that she likes to beat me over the head with. So it's easy to know what she's going to do in almost all situations.

me:i imagine her as a double crosser to her clients but loyal to her friends and crew, is that a fair assessment of her personality/behaviour?

Sheryl:Hmmmm... sort of? I can say she's unpredictable and doesn't make friends easily.

me:well apparently she gets along with varric XD who wouldn't anyway?

Sheryl:Oh, yeah, she gets along with everyone, and she's friendly, but that could be on the surface, no?

me:hmm....interesting so maybe is she putting on a friendly mask while on the inside she's very manipulative?

Sheryl:I wouldn't say manipulative really. Manipulation requires planning, and Isabela doesn't think longterm.

me:oh so she's more impulsive then, good to know.
like a "live for the moment" type of character i'm guessing.

Sheryl:That's a good description.

me:that must be why her crew loves her so much, they never get a dull moment so the fun never stops.

Sheryl:Hehe, you could say that.

I'm curious if the neck piece is just like Varric's doughnut necklace (covering up the neck) or if actually has story / purpose.

Somebody from the Locked forum asked if she renamed he ship when her husband died.

I wanted to say that this is unlikely because renaming a ship is bad luck.

The English did it all the time with prizes during the height of the Royal Navy's power and influence.  Renaming one's own ship, though might be different.

I hope Isa's husband was not the one to name it then. If he named it while married to her and she was already somewhat like she is as we sorta know her... Yeah...

Well, I was typing on the other thread as it was locked, so I'll probably have a little bit less in this post.

I'm very interested in if she brings up her husband. I'll be honest, I always felt Isabela would turn up again somewhere, but I didn't know where and I didn't remember much of her dialogue. I plan on going through again to really sit and listen to her when I get a chance to replay.

I think as of now I definitely want her as a party member. I'll probably redesign my list when we know more characters as well as more about them, and once I decide how I want to play on my first playthrough. I'm curious about Aveline, but hoping for a party of Bethany, Carver, and Isabela right now. I liked Mhairi though, so I'm also trying not to get heavily involved in the idea of using one particular person at great lengths.

I wonder if at any point we'll get to sail on Siren's Call, either? That would be really cool.

Shoulda pointed out in my previous post that such superstitions exist in our world, maybe it doesn't in theirs, and ships are renamed without such issues.

She's a gypsy pirate, so I think she got the ship after her husband died, instead of renaming a ship that he possibly owned.

But the ship was already her husband's even before he died. She even says that she inherited it from her husband after Zevran killed him.

Ah well, The Siren's Call prefers Isa anyway.

good point, i wonder if we'll get more info on her late husband later on. isabela doesn't seem the type to mourn for very long though.
