Most seem to agree that 'slavery is bad and stuff'.

Well, the humans enslaved the Elves twice, and I can't recall a single human being the slightest apologetic about that; the Elves give me the impression that they would certainly enslave the humans when given the chance; the Dwarves enslave their own in the form of Golems; the Qunair enslave their own Mages and their own society is one massive slave ring based on brainwashing and they're extremely proud of it; when most outsiders complain about Tevinter they complain about the Blood Magic, not the slavery. The DA universe is based on medieval Europe where slavery is norm in most places most of the time. Of course you know all of that and I should just shut up now. :-S

That's just saying what happened...not how most moral systems feel about all of that or teach about it.

Most seem to be morally opposed to slavery...which is why Sister Petrice was so successful in convincing Hawke and company to aid Ketojan....

Well, like you said, that depends on Hawke.

Come to think of it, what does the Chantry say about slavery? Nothing, if it's modeled after Christianity. They advocate the enslavement of Mages without even defining it as slavery. Andraste was leading a slave rebellion though, which is different from Jesus. But it seems Andraste's slogans are more about ending the tyranny of Magic than freeing slaves. The Germanic barbarians who sacked Rome did not do it to free slaves either.

Well, she wasn't successful at all in convincing me. I had no desire whatsoever to meddle in the Qunari's affairs. The impossibility to do any other quest in the game convinced me. :-P

And remember, Varric was highly unconvinced by Petrice. He's an extremely affable character and gets along well with everybody, but he didn't seem overeager to combat slavery at that point.

It seems the Chantry is against 'unjustified slavery' like...keeping elven slaves just cuz.

But they support (what I feel) is a form of slavery with mages...but mages are dangerous and stuff...so it's okay. However, the Chantry doesn't cage mages in the same way the qunari do, and they probably believe their mages have a 'freedom' of sorts that qunari mages lack...so they feel they are all the better for it.  It all depends on who's making the rules, but the rules are still there and they dictate most behavior and beliefs.

^ Finally! This might be an instance where the Chantry is better than Christianity.

It might help to examine more of Shartan's role in the Chantry mythology. My impression is that Shartan's contribution to Andraste's work is downplayed due to racism. That may indirectly cause the Chantry to downplay Andraste's role in freeing slaves.

However, this is all hypothetical on my part. Saint Peter was a fisherman, and Jesus was clearly a highly skilled fisher Himself according to the Gospels, but you don't see fishing being emphasized in Christianity whatsoever.

I do agree with that...kinda.  Though, I'm not sure it's racism...it's more like "We will win when the four corners of Thedas sing the Chant."

The problem with the slaves Andraste freed is that they wanted to ignore the Andrastians and worship their own gods.  The problem lies more with imperialistic religion than racism.

According to the wiki, Fenris does as well.

I suspect Aveline gives rivalry points because she would rather arrest him than have him killed. Her justice versus Hawke's.

And yet she totally approves of the extrajudiciary execution of Keller?

Yes, because Keller would never receive a fair trial nor would his victims ever find justice in the courts, thanks to Keller's father being a magister. Keller himself tells you that his father has always kept him "safe" from answering for what he did. So in this case Aveline is ok with vigilante type justice because it's the only way to make sure justice is served.

In case of Castillon, there's enough evidence  and witnesses at hand to make sure he gets locked up.

Chantry doesn't condone slavery which is why slavery is illegal in all andrastian nations. That doesn't prevent individuals from engaging in slave trade as long as their "merchandise" gets sold outside of Chantry controlled territory, however.

Elves and mages were never enslaved by the Chantry. Elves are free but they're considered to be second class citizens by most humans and therefore are looked down upon. But all the elves in the game are either servants, merchants, dockworkers or some other kind of manual labourer, and all of them get payed for their work and can quit if they so desire.

Mages aren't slaves either, but they are put under tight control because of their powers and the dangers they might pose, which means they lack many of the freedoms a normal human enjoys. The fact that some templars abuse their authority over mages is a different matter.

Oh, and can we drop real life religions out of the argument? Moderators don't tolerate discussion of such sensitive topics on these forums and I don't really see how this adds anything to what is a discussion of a fantasy setting.

Shartan originally had a verse dedicated towards him in the Chant of Light. It was cut after the Dales were invaded.

:? Bringing the thread back on topic, like there isn't enough dog s*** in Kirkwall, there aren't enough gratuitous Isabela screencaps out there. I thought I'd rectify the situation and after several hours, have uploaded three glorious pages to my photobucket. So peruse, make arty stuff out of and enjoy all you want ;) (LadyHawke/Isabela pairing theme BTW!)

Tutchangers continues to be awesome. New comic!

Edit: Ninja'ed!

Also, someone saw tutchangers' awesome paper boat art, and decided to do her own take on it. wikdValkyrie has painted this lovely piece after asking for my permission (what a sweetie!), and now has posted it.

Sorry for being a ninja, hoorayforicecream.

I love the pic you posted, especially Isabela's expression. She truly appears to be touched by Hawke's gift.

Hopefully, wikdValkyrie will be inspired to do more.

He's probably a refugee from southern Ferelden. Everywhere he goes, he ends up witnessing sword fights in taverns.

I'm posting this again, because Tutchangers made a change to it. Can you spot it? It was something totally missing from the other version posted above, and (I think) adds a lot to the story with its inclusion.

Was Isabela missing a piercing in the fourth picture?

Nope, that was not the change.
