Varric dressed up as a scotsman (kilt included)
Isabela as a pirate (with a complimentary parrot on her shoulder)
Bethany as a witch
Carver as frankenstein (as evidenced in his thread)
Aveline in a suit of heavy armour, as reference to the famous Aveline

And I lost my leg
I climbed up the topsails
I lost my leg
I'm shipping up to Kirkwall
(whoa oh oh)
x3
I'm shipping off
To find my wooden leg
I'm a sailor peg
And I lost my leg
I climbed up the topsails
I lost my leg
I'm shipping up to Kirkwall
(whoa oh oh)
x3
I'm shipping off
To fing my wooden leg

She was her model for the Sacred Ashes trailer.

Was Isabela always planned to have a major/companion role in a future game when she was created for DA:O? Or was she just there and the creative team decided to expand on her?

Figure I'll ask again now that I've got a better chance of someone that may know the answer being on.

according to this response from Sheryl it seems to be the latter.

Yes, you have said you find it odd several times. And David has responded to you at least once saying that we've never managed to please everyone with a love interest. Isabela is no different. Don't like her? Fine, don't romance her. In fact, I believe I mentioned that you don't have to talk to her if you don't want to. But coming on here and repeatedly saying that you find our decision to bring her back odd accomplishes... what exactly? We like Isabela and we wanted to explore her character a bit more. Whether you like it or not, she's here to stay.

This is what happened:
Long, long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and DAO was still in development...
David: (paraphrased) Hey, Sheryl, we need you to write a character to give the PC the duelist class. Doesn't have to be long, just make it interesting.
(Discussion ensues... 99% of which I have completely forgotten.)
Sheryl: (paraphrased) I'll make her a pirate!
David: (paraphrased) Sure, whatever.
Later on, during one of the caffeine and sugar-fueled writer lunches...
Sheryl: I thought it would be neat to give the player the option of sleeping with her to earn the specialization, instead of having to play the game.
Someone else: What about if you're in a relationship with one of your followers?
Sheryl: Maybe they won't let you?
Someone else: Or they could just join in!
Sheryl: Oghren's head would explode.
Everyone else: It would, wouldn't it?
(Discussion ensues: How exactly would Oghren's head explode?)
Sheryl: This will be funny. People won't see it as Isabela's defining characteristic or anything!
(Ah, idealism.)
Fast foward. DA2 is now in development...
Mike: ....aaaaand Isabela is coming back!
Sheryl:

*eager to see your work with isabela*
there have been strong women in media and videogames but few actually resemble the archetype of han/mal. so i'm curious to see how that type of character works when it is written for a woman;)

Did you suggest that Isabela come back and she made some sort of 'cut'? I mean, were you expecting it?

If by some stroke of luck I find myself at a Bioware event, and if by another you are there too, I have a high five waiting for deployment. The kind of high five that freeze-frames are made of.

This is funny. I had a huge spat with someone on [other forum] who railed about you being no different than a fangirl inserting herself into a fanfic because you stuck Isabela in DA 2. Apparently, that entire argument was for nothing.

I think she'll have a jar of dirt. Can't be a pirate without a jar of dirt!
Isabela: "I have a jar of dirt, and guess what's inside it!"
Varric: "Dirt?"
Hawke: *Facepalm*
