Quick example of what I'm saying:

Writer: "I'm developing a sequel to Return of the Jedi in which Admiral Ackbar will play a role!"

Possibility: It is going to be about how Ackbar leads the Rebel Alliance fleet in destroying Imperial remnants after the Battle of Endor in a series of daring adventures!
Possibility: It is going to be a situation comedy focused on a retired Ackbar living with Mon Mothma tentatively titled, "That's My Squid!"
Possibility: It is going to be about a new group of Rebel heroes who occasionally seek advice on whether or not something is an ambush after they have already encountered it by consulting the wise Ackbar.

Just because we know there is going to be a link between old and new does not mean we can evaluate the substance of that link blindly.

yes a very very minor character, which is why it seems pointless to me

Hell, it is very easy to miss the character as well as only sidequests venture over there.

In that case I don't see how you can rectify the view that it is pandering to a fanbase as well as it being a pointless minor character.  Seems like it can't be both.

They have their reasons, and until we know what they are - either through more information being revealed or actually playing the game and finding out what they had in mind - judging it one way or the other is pointless.  It may very well seem pointless right now, but our impressions now aren't worth much once we sit down and see what they had up their sleeves.  Maybe it will be an inspired link, maybe it will - as you say - be pointless.  We can't possibly know at this stage.

In regards to the first point

Its pandering to the fans of DA:O because it is a very minor character.  It is someone of no consequence who the players would not know of unless they played the first game.  At this stage because there is very little to know about the character from the interactions within DA:O, she exists as this in DA 2 purely as a reference.  A possibly "Oh thats cool moment"

Like for example Eli Vance in Half Life 2, who is referenced as one of the scientists you help out right after the incident in the first game.  Different VA, Different Model, it was there to be a cool reference.   However in DA 2 you play as a different character so that angle is nonexistant.  So the only remaining link is a reference to DA:O, like for instance if Gorim sells you stuf in Kirkwall.  Except on a much bigger scale that I believe would be better served it if it was a new character.

To be fair, we didn't actually get to see much of her in DAO. The interaction with her was very superficial but seeing that she has an interesting base that can be built upon, I'm glad to see her return. Can't wait to see more of her

since she's a pirate, maybe she'll attack hawke and family during the boat ride to kirkwall.

Thats a good idea. I thought the most logical thing would be for them to meet in Ferelden and Hawke convince her to let him and his family hitch a ride to Kirkwall, but I think Isabela and her crew attacking and boarding Hawke's boat would make things a lot more interesting.

I think Sheryl said that you could avoid interaction with Isa completely. Of course, she could have just been reacting to all the "I don't wanna get near her she's so [negative adjective here]."

So Dave, all the Darkspawn are now disciples? And Ogres too? I wasn't aware they exited in the time period before awakening and presumable pursue a some refugees near lothering for no apparent reason.

Wow, you got me.

I'm starting to think NKKKK just likes arguing things that he's convinced himself are right without letting anyone get a word in edgewise.

I'm looking forward to seeing Isabela in action. Didn't think much about her before but am curious now that she's a main character. She's a pirate; does she rob random people (like the ones attacking her at the Pearl) or is she more of a merc?

No, however it isn't unreasonable for them to look similar.

And Ogres too?

Ogres look extremely similar to DA:O, they just have odd skin pigments instead of purple...ish...thing.

anywhere is good for isabela as long as there is violence, money and good looking men and women and a good mug of ale. all a pirate could ask for

Actually she didn't rob those guys. They played cards with her and lost. They got pissed and decided they'd attack her to get their money back.

Aren't you a good judge of character? Protip: You're not.

Interesting, nah she's probably a chaotic good criminal.

If you're addressing only one person in this thread, feel free to take it to PM. If you're discussing the design overhaul of DA2 in general, take it to another thread. This thread is about Isabela. Focus.

Is it pandering if this conversation, or something close to it, happened in the writer's room:

Writer 1: "And so Hawke makes his way to Denerim, only days before the Darkspawn Horde descends upon the capitol city."
Writer 2: "Why do you always have to embellish when we're just talking?  Why not say 'just in time' ?"
Writer 1: "..."
Writer 2: "Whatever.  Anyway, we can have the player try and frantically get some transport out of there, but almost everyone has already bailed."
Writer 3: "Well, running on land is probably getting tiresome and they're gonna be getting to the Free Marches anyway.  Why not hire a boat?"
Writer 1: "We're gonna have to write a ship and crew for that, though."
Writer 2: "They could hire Isabela's ship.  She's probably still fighting drunks in the Pearl. They can pay her half now and half when they reach Alderaan Kirkwall."
Writer 1: "You might be on to something."

I don't expect it went down like that, but I do think it's closer to the truth than "Hey lets put Isabela in DA:2 our fans will think it is cool."

The chance of her cheating them like she does The Warden though is pretty high. She's not exactly innocent.

Ugh. I'm gonna hate alternating between the Warden and Hawke.

Keep telling yourself when you're looking a black haired Zevran with a connecting ear to nipple earing.

And that makes it ok for you to spam the forums with posts that all basically say the same thing?

Does that make it ok to backseat mod?

Okay, I've been looking around for a theme song for Isabella. I was thinking something adventerous and exotic. I decided on a particular song from my Ipod, not sure how enjoyable it is, and it might not fit everyones tastes, but it seems to fit her character, so...

How about this one?

Kinda looks like her too, except with blonde hair. :P

According to my understanding Hawke left Lothering while he was a teenager. If so, there should be a huge age gap between Hawke and Isabela. Can someone please confirm this or is my understanding incorrect?

They haven't confirmed Hawke's age, but I wouldn't assume Hawke is necessarily a "teenager."  If so, it'd be late teens at the most.
