*stands up from his chair in the circle* Hello, I am Inhuman One and have never played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.

*ducks away to avoid getting hit by plastic swords, baldur's gate figurines and beer bottles*

Ahem, as I was saying, I never played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.

Why? well actually that make make sense if I explain it, since I was old enough to play them at the time of release.
I never liked RPG's at first. Many where turn based or looked terrible compared to other games at the time. Dungeon Siege changed that though, the looks of that game appealed to me, partially because it was one of the first 3D RPG's. It wasnt very hard and was kind of a shallow RPG, but it was a good game to introduce me to RPG's. The music and voice acting was quite memorable and after ten playthroughs I still found new items I never saw before.

A friend recommended Neverwinter Nights so I gave it a try. I didnt understand much of it at first though with its saving throws, resting, attack bonusses and all that and at first I considered Dungeon Siege to be a better game. Eventually when I went online, got introduced to mods and really started to roleplaying that opinion changed though, that I am still playing Neverwinter Nights and havent played Dungeon Siege in years proves it.

I never really considered getting Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 but lately I really am considering it despite it being horribly outdated by now. I know that graphics and all that arent everything, but its different when you played a game at release or play it for the first time ten years or more after release.

I dislike BGI. BG II is a far better game. Play that one instead.

Like Maria said, BG2 is the better game since BG1 has its problems. I could never beat the unmodded version of the first game because I got really bored while playing it. Fortunately, there are mods out there that changes the first game to bring it more in line with the second. These mods include everything from a completely revamped gameplay to fleshed out party member interactions.

If you want to learn more about the mods, you can visit these two sites to begin with:

Worry not. I didn't play BG/BG2 until last year. I liked 'em, but they're not my favorites. I do think they're essential, though. Go play BG2.

I suggest if you have the interest that you go and try them out. Especially II. I just played through BGII again not too long ago and while playing it, I found that instead of it being a pure nostalgy-trip, I still enjoyed the game for what it is: a magnificient and entertaining RPG. At least for me, it's one of those games that retains its value even today, as opposed to many "classics" which were awesome at the time but these days mostly only serve purpose as nostalgy-trips.

Baldur's Gate I I'd say hasn't stood against time that well though, in my opinion. It's still a good game and all, but I'm bit more doubtful about recommending that one for someone uncertain and with no previous history with the game.

So yeah. BG2: Definately. BG1: Maybe.

Both are good and both have their charms. BG1 had some very good things about it that have not been repeated since. (Not an abundance of powerful magic items, many areas to just explore and find neat quests unrelated to the main quest of the game.) I agree that BG2 is better but BG1 was good as well.

Baldur's Gate I & II were great in the fact that they proved Bioware could create and sustain a successful franchise. While the IP is not of their own making, they did infuse it will game play elements that were rewarding to experience that the time of their release.

Baldur's Gate 1 was great in its own time, but still I couldn't bring myself finishing it. It took me some tries to get into Baldur's Gate 2 as well, due to the partial lack of voice overs. However, once I managed to make it through the first dungeon and into the city, I was completely sucked in by the game.

^__^ I'm actually playing Baldur's Gate 2 again right now in wait for Dragon Age to come out. It is definitely worth a play through, despite how old it is!

In my opinion, it's best to play the whole Baldur's Gate series from start to finish. Baldur's Gate is a bit confusing at first and the extremely low movement speed can be a bit of a drag, but I think it's still quite enjoyable and interesting, and although Baldur's Gate II can certainly be played alone, I don't think it's as fun to do so. And as another note, if you don't play Throne of Bhaal as well, I'd say you're missing out on something (namely a satisfying conclusion and a good deal of fun).

Also, on the subject of graphics, I've always really liked them. Especially in Baldur's Gate II. I'd take them over something like Neverwinter Nights or any other early 3d game any day. Of course, for some perspective, I should probably point out that I'm genuinely fond of the graphics in Lemmings and some other old DOS games as well.

Though if you are the kind of person who doesn't always insist on reading book series from start to finish and wouldn't mind starting somewhere in the middle (I am very definitely not), then the other people are probably right that Baldur's Gate II is a better game all around.

I still can't bother my way through BG2. I... Really don't see the appeal. At all.

That's exactly how I felt, until during an unproductive week with no good releases when I sat down and forced myself grinding through the first two hours. Then? I was hooked. You really should give the game a dedicated try when you have a chance.

I would if the journal didn't confuse about what I should be doing, and areas randomly disappear from my game.

I haven't finished ToB, been doing it for more than 2 years. :o

BG1 has a lot of advantages. Mainly, you are really WEAK at the beginning. Most monsters are stronger than you. You die after a few hits, often after one spell. Magic is rare, but powerful. This makes combat very strategic. You can't afford to waste any spells. You really feel like a "fresh adventurer". And the game is extremely non-linear, lots of exploration.

To make it enjoyable for newcomers, you should play it with the BG2 engine, though - there are two ways for this, either the Baldur's Gate Triology Mod or the Baldur's Gate: Tutu Mod.

You may want to add the "BG1 NPC Project", too, because it adds quite good-written party interaction to the game (the only thing I missed in BG1 at the beginning).

For BG2, just patch it for your first playthrough. While there are some good NPC/Romance mods and a lot of difficulty enhancing mods, I think one should first play the unmodded game here.

And yes, both games are definetly worth it.

Both games are worth it, IMO. If we're speaking strictly game-bought without mods, BGII is far better, IMO. But if you put in the companion/party/romance mods -- many of which are great -- the enjoyment of both games can significantly increase. Tis a beautiful thing.

I didn't care much for BG1. Four or five years ago, I had a choice between playing NWN1 and BG2, and, after playing the first few minutes of each, I overwhelmingly went with NWN. I *did* go back and play BG2 eventually (just finished it for the first time last night and started on TOB)... it was all right. I didn't think the combat was that great, though... most of the boss fights went from seemingly impossible to insanely easy if you did things a certain way. The story was good, for what it's worth. It was refreshing to have an antagonist who wasn't the Big Bad Sealed Away in a Can.

Spoilers...

Kangaxx frustrated me, not because he was difficult by himself, but because of his imprisonment spell. So, I looked up how to beat imprisonment... with one player immune to the spell he became a joke. Irenicus at the top of the world tree? First time was a mess, reloaded, and decided to buff up and prepare first. Dropped some traps around him, and he died as soon as he went hostile... oops. Irenicus in hell, Dispel -> Pierce magic -> Breach -> Greater Malison -> Lower Resistance -> Disintegrate, done.

End spoilers.

I haven't played them either, really. Well, I've tried BG2. And I know this'll make plenty of people hate me, but I was bored to death with the outdated technology. I know I should be able to look beyond that and enjoy the game, but I couldn't. I tried like hell, but I just couldn't do it. I hated Diablo II for the same reason. I suppose I just showed up to the games far too late.

I still have it on my pc, though. Perhaps I'll give it another shot. Not like there's any truly good games out at the moment anyway. Well, I've been thinking about trying Borderlands. We'll see.

Heh, this thread made me reinstall the game again to give it another go.

The companion mods can be fun, but the downside is that some of them were written to almost completely overtake the game or don't have any Throne of Bhaal content.

And I've been waiting five years for the Delainy mod.

I played BG/BGII with the BGT-WeiDU mod this summer.. it really made BG seem new and fun. Someone out there made a mod so that you could play Planescape Torment in a higher resolution.. I installed it and it looks pretty good.. i just haven't re-played it yet.

Still, you should play them. Err... I've seen someone mention BG1 isn't as close as BG2 was. They are right. But still it would be nice to play the first one too. Second point, there are mods, especially the famous NPC project which makes the game more like BG2.

I still can't make it past the start of Torment. But that's okay, I hear Mask of the Betrayer was pretty much the same game... And I can't play that either.

They just *bother* me.

I have no idea why.

To the OP: If you liked Dungeon Siege and NWN maybe you should consider giving KOTOR I + II (knights of the old republic, another game from Bioware in case you didnt know what the abbrevation stands for) a shot instead of BG I and/or II.

That is if you are in Sci-Fi at least a bit of course.
