I have a confession to make.

Mass Effect followed of course, while its a great game it is the least of the Bioware games in my opinion. The setting lacks an identity of its own, but that does seem to be greatly improved with Mass Effect 2.
KOTOR2 I played as well but it lacked Bioware's touch. It was somewhat enjoyable still although rushed. NWN2 was that bad that I try to ignore its very existance since it lacked everything that made NWN1 great (in my personal opinion)
Anyway, I will look if I can find a package of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 + the expansion. I saw that some years ago I believe so I know its around in that combination.
Why I want to play it now is because I kind of want to see the origin of Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic. Many claim its quite a good origin story after all.
The funny thing is, while you guys will have recognized things from Baldur's Gate in newer Bioware games, for me its going to be the other way around.

BG1 can require a lot of patience at the beginning, because it can be very tough just to survive. I definitely wouldn't start your first game as a mage. After you've reached level 3 things begin to get a lot more enjoyable. Having said that, there is a difficulty slider and quite a few mods that make the game easier, same for BG2
In BG2 it's perhaps worth learning about the spells and what they do. Mages can be extremely powerful in this game and if you come up against one, without knowing how to debuff, you will die pretty quickly.
Both are well worth the effort IMO. A conservative estimate of my time spent playing the BG series would be about 800 hours. Even if you only manage one tenth of that you've still got incredibly good value for money. But hey, you may not like either. I'd say it's worth finding out. If you do get hooked, you'll be hooked for a long time (DA permitting of course).

I am pretty sure I clocked over 4000 hours with Neverwinter Nights since I play it almost every day still ever since I got it a few months after release. I had breaks of a month at most.
Its my favorite game and anything else I just play alongside of it. A game must be really good to stop me from playing NWN more than a week. I just wish that Bioware would make another game with such an easy to use toolset and easy to connect multiplayer. Dragon Age only has half of that. A game must have both to replace NWN.
I probably wont really get into Baldur's Gate untill I played through Dragon Age a few times, but when I see the game I will buy it and save it for when I have time for it. I might use cheats or such to go through the game faster. Its mostly the story that interests me.

heh well I naturally cant speak for Baldur's Gate series, but I can strongly recommend Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire and Mass Effect.

Appearantly if an RPG has multiplayer it must be massive. Considering the number of players on a server, less is more pretty much always.

As for neverwinter nights, yes the singleplayer is rather boring. I lost interest at chapter 2 with the dull barn and farm theme. But the multiplayer component and the toolset where perfect. With a bit of extra effort the singleplayer part could have been just as good.
Personly I wouldnt mind it if a game like Dragon Age would be build with the plans to add multiplayer through an expansion or such to keep it more in the background and not draw attention away from singleplayer. That way the game would be designed with multiplayer in mind for the expansion but it wouldnt disturb the main campaign. As the game would be released they could continue to work on the multiplayer aspect with full attention.
Dragon Age has everything to become a great game, it just needs that multiplayer component NWN has to become very close to perfection.

As to not liking any of the party NPC's, how could you not like Minsc&Boo, even if no one else? I feel sorry for anyone who leads a life so sad and empty.
With that out of the way, I would recommend going through BG1 at least once. To be honest, having played through 1, I like 2 better, but 2 feels a lot more complete having been through 1. Of course, I think 1 is a more than decent game in its own right.
