Does anyone know what to do about the problem of the game disc not reading on the 360? I have Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition. The DLC disc ran fine after I restarted my console. I was able to install all of the DLC to my hard drive. However, the 360 is failing to read the game disc. The system reads my other games just fine. The system does not show a disc read error. It says "Reading" then simply says "Open Tray" as if the disc isn't even in the drive. Has anyone else had this error? Does this happen on any 360 you have regardless of whether it is the old SKU or the new 360 Slim? Is it possibly just a bad disc that was sent out?

Well, it certainly could be a bad disc. That's always possible. However, with modern technology and disc printing procedures the chances of it being that are pretty small. Products like games are under warranty for 60-90 days or so to protect consumers against "faulty" problems like this. You'll have to try to go back to the retailer you bought it from and ask for an exchange or follow the warranty instructions on the last few pages of the game booklet.

In all likelihood, given what I mentioned about today's manufacturing standards, the issue is probably with your Xbox DVD-ROM drive. Unfortunately like many things with the Xbox, the older model DVD drives tended to have mechanical or laser failure problems after a while. Now, since you didn't mention what model Xbox you have this may be a moot point. If you've got the new Slim and it's been working fine with everything else then I'm probably wrong. However, if you've got the older Zephyr or Falcon chipsets I could be right about the disc drive.

My friend and I are having this very same problem with our newly bought Ultimate Edition discs. My other games work fine. I even went so far as to go back and exchange mine for a new one and it produced the same results.

Which Xbox model do you have?

Mine's a 360 pro from when they had the three different editions. My friend has a newer one.

EDIT: To clarify I had to trade in for this one last year right before they switched over to the new ones

Oh, I meant chipset model. Over the years, the Xbox has undergone some internal hardware revisions.

Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, and the most recent "Slim" model are the ones I can remember at the moment. You could probably check by seeing what the wattage output on your power supply unit is. I believe the Falcon is 175W and the Jasper is 150W. No idea what the Slim or old Zephyr models are.

I was just trying to figure out if the potential exists for it to be a disc drive issue (like I mentioned above due to having an old console) or something else. It does sound like you both have a "newer" console so I'm not sure.

I can't vouch for my friend's but mine sports a 150W power supply thus making it a Jasper yes?

Indeed. That's the one I have too, though I don't have an ultimate edition to test.

Sigh...

I would consider that a newer model and less likely to suffer from the mechanical failure I mentioned. Which means that considering you've already traded discs, I'm not sure I know what's wrong. Only thing left I can think of is installing the game to the hard drive. Maybe then, it will work?

I'll give it a try.

Edit: Or rather I would if I could. Since the disc won't register and I don't have Xbox Live I think I'm out of luck. I'll probably exchange it again when the store I bought it at gets a new shipment in.

Well, it's probably the console then. I could try it on my friends console. He's got the 360 Slim. I've got a used 360 Pro. But like I said all my other games work fine including Mass Effect which has scratches and blemishes all over it from extended play.

I just now tried a bunch of different solutions from the Xbox Support website and those solutions didn't work so it could be the system needs to be repaired. But it's odd. My other games work just fine. It's just DAO: Ultimate Edition. Weird.

I'm having a similar issue. I was able to install Disc 2 of Ultimate Edition and when I first put Disc 1 in, it showed as the DA disc in My Xbox. I installed the game to my harddrive and that went fine. I hit play after it installed and the game started, told me I needed an update, the update loaded and after that it no longer played. In fact, it acted like it thought the game was a DVD movie, taking me to the player but I couldn't do anything from there.

I uninstalled it from my HD, cold-booted my xbox and now I can play again. I may try to re-install it to my HD again later today.

Just tried the uninstall and reboot and the disc still won't show up for me. Maybe I'll haul the system up to Best Buy and take advantage of my protection plan to have them look at it.

Update!: I reinstalled the dlc and such from the second disc and that got the main disc working. It's installing to the HD as I type this. Hopefully this will solve the issue.

Update 2: Installing to the HD appears to have fixed the issue. Sure I lost my old DAO saves in the process but it's a small price to pay to be able to play the game.

I haven't installed it back to the HD yet, but there is definitely something with my disc. In the middle of the game, I'm in Ostagar about to leave into the Wilds and now I get "This disc is unreadable" game errors whenever it tries to read from the dvd. Checked surface and it is clean and unmarred.

Will be taking mine back to Gamestop tonight to swap it. From other forums, sounds like they may have a bit of manufacturing defect out there on this release.

That's what it looks like. Installing on the HD didn't work out long term. Ended up taking my 360 down to Best Buy to be checked out. End result being my unit is being replaced and probably doesn't need it. I'll try swapping out again if that works out for you.

I swapped mine tonight, installed to the HD with no problem (and it seemed to me that it copied much quicker than my original one), started up fine and I haven't had one problem with it since. Looks like the defect in the disc is sounding more and more likely.

Sounds like I just had a case of bad luck in getting two bad copies then. I guess I'll swap out again when I can.

Ok I have a brand new Halo Reach 360 Slim and I am having this issue when I try to use my DA Collectors Ed Disc 1. I just used it a few days ago after switching from my old 360 Halo Unit to the new Slim 360 Halo Unit.. I am positive the patch we had to download screwed up something. It seems to be all xboxs across the board.. They need to patch this problem and fast. My UE Disc 1 works fine, but my Collectors Ed. Old DA disc 1 does not work Directly after the patch. Its acting like its a bad disc which clearly it works on all other systems..

Hey Forumn Mods, we need to get on this bug asap.. I am not a happy camper

Defects are not in the DVDs or in the Systems.. The Defect is in the patch and something going wrong with the patch that is causing this issue. My issue is totally out of left field and the disc works fine before the install and works fine on all other systems from my original Collectors Ed. The patch is the issue

My friend and I came to the same conclusion. I have yet to trade mine in again as I haven't had the time.

I haven't seen this issue on the normal customer service reports we get - if folks are having this problem and it was resolved with swapping to a new disc at your store, can you PM me some info on where you purchased your box from?

Sounds like a cop out. Clearly this is happening and its happen with PC and 360.. I know I have the problem with both on a brand new 360 with no other games having issues and PC doenst like to see the DVD in the drive every so often.. So how are both of my drives bad? I think not.. Sounds more like bugs

Cry4Dawn, I am having the exact same problem you are having. I just upgraded to an Xbox 360 slim, and now my Collector's Edition Disc does not work either. And it's definitely not the hardware, since every other game I own works just fine. I also don't think there is a problem with the disc, since there is not a single scratch on it. The easiest thing to do would be to just buy another copy from Games on Demand, but why should I have to buy the game for the third time?

I bought it for PC and I also have problems with the game disc. Sometimes my drive recognizes it sometimes it doesn't. When it does it takes about 1 minute to load and bypassing the Autorun doesn't solve the problem. There's also a problem with reading the disc. Before passing to the second layer of the disc, the reading speed slows down to a crawl. It keeps reading at this speed, for the next 200Mb or so and then it goes back to normal. I have an Asus DRW-2014LT and all my other discs work just fine, including other EA titles which came on dual-layer discs (Crysis, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge). I'm very much interested if this is a disc fault or some sort of incompatibility with the DVD drives.
