I've always said something like this, however I don't know what would be considered as sexualized on men.

Varric wearing nothing but a golden thong codpiece & two leather straps crisscrossing his hairy chest

Rather than this horrific back and forth over sexism and the impracticality of her clothing, perhaps what this thread needs is something constructive. What do you think she, a pirate captain, should be wearing?

And people keep losing sight of something rather important.

They keep treating Isabela as an all defining example of women in the Dragon Age universe even though Isabela is an exceptional character and does not set the standard. If every woman was dressed like her then many of these arguments about the unfair portrayal of women would make sense but the fact is that they don't. Isabela is the only example we have of this type of clothing.

If you stop treating her as a representative of Bioware's view of femininity in general and focused on her being an individual person in a sea of individuals then this ceases to be an issue.

Especially since Isabela, as a character, embodies aspects of a counter culture to the societal influences of Dragon Age cultures. Most women wont be like her simply because she exists outside the cultural controls that govern most women.

As long as we're being academic and centered on Norse culture... what is Beowulf? Tell me, as you understand it...

Beowulf is controversial at best. Scholars still argue about that one as it was written by Christian Anglo Saxons...and you have to remember that Vikings were considered a pagan culture. Much of the history we got about those cultures was written by the Church which basically controlled everything at that time. It wasn't until archeological study that we learned more of what was true about them.

I thought you'd ask me about  Skald poetry or Lebor Gabala.

Figured I'd give you an easy target. But since you brought it up. Tell me about Skaldic poetry.

Edit: Try not to take twenty minutes to look it up this time.

Personally I think what she's wearing is fine, for a pirate. Like Saibh has been saying she just needs pants. My thing was just not all armor is heavy plate mail.

This is actually historically inaccurate. While pederasty was common in other city states, most notably in Athens, it is not a prevading aspect of Greek culture. Most people just, incorrectly, assign everything that Athens did to the rest of Greek society. The Spartans did not have a tradition of pederasty as the Athenians did and often ridiculed them for these practices. They also did not share the Athenian ideals for what was aesthetically pleasing.

Furthermore. If one searches into the Athenian writings on this subject, it is made clear that grown male adults, which were the competitors on these games, were never assigned modes of attractiveness and all of these practices were reserved for young, unbearded boys.

But then, for some reason, people tend to over sexualise the Greeks and their practices. So I can hardly blame the slip.

Wait, what? Are you saying Spartan pedastry didn't exist? It...most certainly did. It was prevalent in Spartan culture for a long time. Honestly, I can't find a reliable article on the internet about why Olympians competed nude one or or another. There's Wikipedia. There's this. But I wouldn't stake anything on them, even if they back me up. One way or another, it's not a valid argument, so I'm going to drop it.

Dont know actually as I've never seen Zardoz.  I just knew that picture of Connery existed and fit the description I quoted, heh.  The Wiki is rather amusing though.

Yes, I am saying Spartans did not practice Athen's tradition of pederasty. I'm no longer concerned over why Olympian's competed naked as, yes, those two links lend no academic integrity to your argument.

Now I'm interested in your evidence as to the practice of pederasty outside of Athens.

Hey I'm all for everyone fighting in the nude except for line soldiers if that is what you guys think are realistic.

Only problem then, is all the women would be complaining the pixelized boobs were more realistic than the pixel penises and claiming bias.

Well, maybe so. But a thread just like it would exist, I'm sure. Maybe centered on her cleavage rather than her bum... but still.

Say, would you like an armor like Ellen in Kingdom Under Fire?

Posted Image

But then again, I really love Cirith's outfit, from the very same game:

Which brings me to the point...not every female in DA2 is going to look like Isabela.

Also, I don't think Isabela NEEDS pants. Seriously.

Wait, why don't you have to present evidence?

I'm pretty sure the chain of reliability goes: academic journal > Wikipedia > random forum poster
