I'll be hitting the collector ship soon, and since its my first playthrough as an engineer, I'm not sure what to get in regards to weapons specialization. I'm only picky in the fact that I don't use the Geth Plasma Shotgun (I prefer almost every other shotgun over it), and the Incisor as well (good with other sniper rifles though). Any suggestions?

Get the Assault Rifle Specialization and use the Mattock.

Good range and damage, and serves as a hybrid between an AR and a sniper.

I love assault rifles so on the three "non-combat" (relatively speaking...) classes, I pick them.

sinosleep has demonstrated though that shotguns are a viable choice: http://social.biowar...1/index/4873892

Shotguns are great; those combat drones will keep enemies occupied making them easy targets.

Go shotgun, better yet, go shotgun and then make and post youtube videos of you decimating any enemy dumb enough to get in your way. Engineers need more love.

I've just went shotgun with an engineer. Great fun. The Drone is a great 'look over there!' tactic as you shoot them in the back.

shotgun engineer is alll sorts of fun. i just finished my engineer insanity playthrough, and although engineer can be squishy, played smart it's awesome. :D

Definitely go with the shotgun, the engineer has great tech powers that can allow you to control the battlefield while you move in to finish them off and plus its a heck of a lot of fun.

Nothing beats pressing a shotgun up agains the back of their head and pulling the trigger.

Shotgun.

Definitely makes the Engineer more rogue-like, moreso than the Infiltrator.

Personally I tried shotguns on my engineer and didn't care for it. Altho the drone + shotty tactic is fun, I find it even more reckless and dangerous the a charge happy vanguard. Engineers just dont have a ton of surviveability to me.

In retrospect either the mattock or viper would have been much better fit for my playstyle. I like to keep the squishy classes(adept and engineer) at range and use a drone or grunt to keep people busy upfront while I unload hell with constant powers.

I'd say you can't compare on bonus weapon alone.

I think the strongest load out for the Engineer is:
Geth Plasma Shotgun + Locust
followed by:
Mattock + Tempest

The reasoning is the GPS (and the Locust for that matter) handle mid-range great, just like the Mattock, but the GPS handles close-range better than the Tempest.  Plus the GPS has the charged shot option.

For those without the Firepower DLC, you're choosing between:
Vindicator + Tempest
Scimitar/Evi + Locust
Viper + Tempest
(no opinion on the ranking of these)

I personally went with Scimitar + Locust.  I do have the Firepower DLC, but I just prefer the feel of the other shotguns over the GPS personally.  It is easier, because of the increased effective range, with the GPS though.

GPS would have been great for you.  You don't have to get as close with it as the other shotties.

I did try out the GPS and it is a power house on any class really. I love the range capabilities but.... for some reason I just prefer the Scimiar or Evi. In the end solid tactics will win the day. Use the guns you like :)

I'm not regretting picking shotgun on my engineer at all. Just got them 2 missions ago, and I'm already in love. First time I've used a shotgun at all in me2 (it was my exclusive weapon in me1, oddly), and it's really satisfying for some reason. Theyre all balanced great (best of any weapon balance, I'd say), and theres one for every situation. I think with Engies, the Locust handles mid-range exceptionally, and with some practice the Phalanx can be used for long-range (atleast thats what I do), so a shotgun covers your cqc needs. The combat drone usually gives you enough of a distraction to get in close with minimal problems, especially if you spam it every 3 seconds to keep enemies occupied while you rush them.

That said, I doubt you'd be disappointed with picking AR, since the Mattock is beastly in almost every situation on every class. I prefer shotguns, though.

I appreciate I'm only ~ level 10 as an engineer for the first time ever (and by god they're alot of fun, as fun as a vanguard!) however I've done a soldier/vanguard and adept playthrough so I hope I can add something to this thread.

You can use the drone to flush out people behind cover/stun them. Captain Obvious, yes, however my point is you can use that to blow their heads off with either of the hand-cannons or a sniper rifle. Medium range would be your hand cannon and drone+powers. And your squaddies of course.

Shotgun? I can see how that would work, with overload shutting weapons down and/or the combat drone drawing fire for you to get close and blast them. Bit risky though, since you'll lack the vanguard's ability to recharge shields with a charge, potentially landing you in alot of trouble if things go badly. Personally I can't really see the point beyond using to to handle things that have got too close. However, you've got your powers and an SMG for that. Expanding on SMG's a bit, something people haven't mentioned is with Garrus/Jack's ammo power you can quickly rip through most things with little hassle while using the tempest at short ranges.

Assault rifle? Yeah, the Mattock would be a good compromise between assault rifle and sniper rifle (and I find it's good even just panic-firing at short range) however the other assault rifles would be good too-the Avenger/Vindicator would be good for medium fights (and IIRC the Avenger packs more damage than the tempest, so might be better at shorter ranges where the smg is handy too).

If you're really unsure, you could (assuming PC) fire up the Coalesced editor and simply add all three weapons. Don't be surprised if it makes the game a bit silly though. Valve noted in a Team Fortress II blog (a game that features 9 distinct classes) that a class is defined by it's weaknesses, not it's strengths, so you'd lose the engineer's main drawback (limited weapon choice).

And you're right, using the Viper's zoom to cast Attack Drone on a distant enemy in cover and then unleashing rapid fire sniper death on them is also highly effective and a heck of a lot safer.  My first Engineer took snipers and used the Viper to great effect that whole half of the playthrough.  The reason shotguns get so many votes, and the reason I love my current Engineer with the Scimitar, is simply because once CQC in ME2 gets in your blood, there's no getting it out.  Many players, once they've played and become somewhat comfortable with the insanity Vanguard, just can't get enough of that heart-pumping near-death in-your-face style, myself included.

I'm probably going to go assault rifle myself. I get really annoyed how characters suddenly randomly start using assault rifles in the cutscenes. Plus I kinda like the pew-pew the Avenger does, and I can always pack the mattock if things get hairy.

I've used every weapon combination with engineer and I prefer Mattock Assault Rifle. I really wanted to like engineer+shotgun, but its simply not as aggressive or efficient as the AR.
