I just seriously considered this spell for the first time. It bypasses MR and you even get the XP if you manage to kill the enemy this way - though 1) I don't know how many bosses are immune to level drain and 2) it's bloody expensive.

Would it be possible to kill Kangaxx for example this way? A spell trap would give you as many casts of the spell as you'd need... But as an undead, he should be immune to it.

How about using multiple mages / Simulacri / PIs to accumulate as many level 9 slots as you'd need to kill specific bosses (like Ascension Yaga Shura)?

I also just verified for myself (didn't know before) that a 2 level loss means 2 level lost for every class a character has - but you don't die until you have no level at all left (so you can be a level 1 fighter/level 0 mage and still be up and about).

Thoughts?

In core rules, Energy Drain should not work on undead, but then neither should Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting and it is one of the best Lich killers in the game.

The biggest problem with this approach is: in what situation is this better to pull off than Shapechange: Mindflayer, Timestop, Attack?  Level draining high level monsters also takes time.  I think Yaga is at least L30, so 15 castings takes a long time to execute even if you can avoid dying for that long.

With Improved Alacrity and Robe of Vecna it takes no time at all. The only limit is the price, since it's a level 9 spell (so you can't even store it in CCs).

Such a strategy would probably work best against spell-casters, I would think. It's still hugely expensive, though.

Energy Drain would be a lot more attractive, IMO, if it were moved down to 8th level... or even lower, honestly. At least then you'd be able to stack a few of them in a trigger or contingency and do some actual, meaningful damage.
