How would you compare this to Baldur's Gate II?

but in terms of gameplay and plot, how do you compare it?
I'd have to say I'm more USED to the UI that BG has, but I might just have to get used to DA: O more.
One thing I really enjoyed about BG:2 was the fact that the sidequests weren't simply fetch and return, or go kill X group of people. I also liked the fact that the sidequests were connected, and not obviously in some cases. I'm not too far into Dragon Age, but so far I'd say BG is a 10/10 and DA: O is an 8/10 in comparison.
If you haven't played BG: 2 how would you compare it to any of Black Isle or Bioware's other games? (PLEASE don't compare it to Mass Effect.)

I agree on the sidequest thing. BG2 had sideQUESTS this game has sideTASKS.

Best part is, there are so *minor spoiler*
little side quest to do! Almost like non-exist.
And you can't really just do the sideTASK most of it is at somewhere in between the main plot.
So ya. most of the side quest is you can't complete them unless you progress in the main plot.

BG2, contrarily, was all sidequests for the second chapter. Doing sidequests WAS the main quest. If that's what you call "connected to each other and the main quest," ok. The rest of the game only had minor sidequests, imo, or, at least, no more than DA:O. You could even argue that chapter two of BG2 is analogous to gathering the army in DAO.

The sidequests were extremely interesting and engaging and in many cases led you to new party members, and new sidequests.
***SPOILERS***
When you're tasked to find out who's behind the skinner murders in the bridge district, the sidequest ends without a resolution, and then that guy shows up later on in another town, while you're completing a different sidequest.
*END SPOILERS*
So what I mean is also that the sidequests feel less like monotonous...sidequests, and more like you making a difference in the world.

I haven't gotten very far in DAO yet but so far, I'm loving it. The biggest compliment that I can pay it at this stage is to say that, from what I've played so far, the potential is there for me to like it more than the BG series.

Regarding the side-quests thing, I think DA has it about right (assuming you can call the *spoiler* early - I appear to have been given the option, but haven't tried it) - one "core" quest and a bunch of big optional sidequests that help you later.
I am hoping it doesn't become turbo-linear like SoA did once this open section is finished.

I think what you really mean is that the BG2 side quests made you feel more like an actual adventurer and less like an errand boy.

My first comparison was actually "this is so much longer than BG2".

This game is not longer than BG2 even Bioware said that they couldn't put as much content into this game as they could into BG2.
Edit: Minor Spoiler
Once that open section is done you are done with the game pretty much. 95% of the game is the gathering of your army
End Spoiler

HOW CAN U BE GAMER??
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE
sorry...only game I actually nerd rage about...
If you haven't played then you have no idea what we mean. BGII is, seriously, THE rpg. At least for me.
I wouldn't be nearly as into games if it weren't for that game. :\\
Seriously though. There are times I seriously consider playing it yet again. I've played it over 10 times. Played it several times through BG1-TOB with the same character. Dragon Age is good, the best in recent times, but it will only compare when a decent amount of player generated content is put into the game. BGII was just more game than dragon age is at this point. And I have to say the story in BGII was better than dragon age. This isn't to diminish Dragon Age's greatness, it's better than every other game I've played. Just doesn't beat BGII.
Plus, Viconia > Morrigan. No question.

I never really understood that complaint. How hard is it really to gather your party?
