Obviously this has better graphics, effects, etc...

but in terms of gameplay and plot, how do you compare it?

I'd have to say I'm more USED to the UI that BG has, but I might just have to get used to DA: O more.

One thing I really enjoyed about BG:2 was the fact that the sidequests weren't simply fetch and return, or go kill X group of people. I also liked the fact that the sidequests were connected, and not obviously in some cases. I'm not too far into Dragon Age, but so far I'd say BG is a 10/10 and DA: O is an 8/10 in comparison.

If you haven't played BG: 2 how would you compare it to any of Black Isle or Bioware's other games? (PLEASE don't compare it to Mass Effect.)

While this is a good game 9/10, BG2 is still better 9.8/10.

I agree on the sidequest thing. BG2 had sideQUESTS this game has sideTASKS.

I agree side quests could have been fleshed out more, some more optional (and hard to find/get) maps with their own map specific side quests would have made this game near perfect imo, but I guess those are gettign sold as DLC :P

I give BG2 a 4/10 and DAO a 10/10. BG gets a 6/10.

I'm totally dissapointed with the side quest. its almost irrelevant to the game plot. Almost like mission in WOW. Go pt A, pick this up and drop it at pt B. Then go turn in your quest. Major dissapointment.

Best part is, there are so *minor spoiler*

little side quest to do! Almost like non-exist.

And you can't really just do the sideTASK most of it is at somewhere in between the main plot.

So ya. most of the side quest is you can't complete them unless you progress in the main plot.

BG games I like more though DA is fun for me. BG series beats it in every way for me though I would relish DA 2 being more along the lines of BG 2 hopefully. BG 2 was simply great fun for me in so many ways while DA is kind of bland compared to it. IWD is a good game and I like it more than DA as well.

Arcanum, Planescape Torment, BG 1, 2, and TOB as well as IWD 1, VBTM, etc.

BG:2 has actual side quests, that's about the only advantage it has over DA:O.

The sidequests are really just there to give the game some extra content and give the players something to do other than just the main story. I don't mind having some non-story related, talk-lite tasks to complete. I just wish they were slightly more obvious, most of the time I just accidently complete them by running in to people. A few bigger zones or maybe even a town or two which weren't completetly tied in to the main plot would be nice.

Outside of story and background, I personally find Baldur's Gate and DA:O very alike, at least in the way they play out. The difficulty level in DA:O reminds me of BG as well, lol. For gameplay, I am liking DA a bit more. I don't know how to explain it, but DA just seems much more fluid. Storywise, BG still tops my list. The plot in BG seems more interesting. Of course, the one in DA:O isn't bad either, and while the plot does not have as much twists and turns as BG does, it is very well told.

There's a good number of sidequests, I thought. The mages collective, the chantry, the mercenaries, and the thieves all have numerous quests. Those fit into the task category, granted. Additionally, each major area has sidequests that are connected to the main quest. Additionally, we have companion side-quests and side-quests for unlocking specializations.

BG2, contrarily, was all sidequests for the second chapter. Doing sidequests WAS the main quest. If that's what you call "connected to each other and the main quest," ok. The rest of the game only had minor sidequests, imo, or, at least, no more than DA:O. You could even argue that chapter two of BG2 is analogous to gathering the army in DAO.

that's true soteria, but what I mean by the sidequests being connected...well... a couple things actually.
The sidequests were extremely interesting and engaging and in many cases led you to new party members, and new sidequests.

***SPOILERS***

When you're tasked to find out who's behind the skinner murders in the bridge district, the sidequest ends without a resolution, and then that guy shows up later on in another town, while you're completing a different sidequest.

*END SPOILERS*
So what I mean is also that the sidequests feel less like monotonous...sidequests, and more like you making a difference in the world.

To be honest, I loved the BG series so much that I just don't think I can objectively compare them. The awesome story, the tactical combat, the unbelievable amount and variety of sidequests plus the sheer luck in terms of release timing (this game came out at a time when I needed something like that to anchor myself to).

I haven't gotten very far in DAO yet but so far, I'm loving it. The biggest compliment that I can pay it at this stage is to say that, from what I've played so far, the potential is there for me to like it more than the BG series.

The game is plagued by what most RPGs suffer from these days - lack of content. Sure it's long, but BG2 long? No way..

My first comparison was actually "this is so much longer than BG2".
Regarding the side-quests thing, I think DA has it about right (assuming you can call the *spoiler* early - I appear to have been given the option, but haven't tried it) - one "core" quest and a bunch of big optional sidequests that help you later.
I am hoping it doesn't become turbo-linear like SoA did once this open section is finished.

I think what you really mean is that the BG2 side quests made you feel more like an actual adventurer and less like an errand boy.

This game is not longer than BG2 even Bioware said that they couldn't put as much content into this game as they could into BG2.

Edit: Minor Spoiler

Once that open section is done you are done with the game pretty much. 95% of the game is the gathering of your army

End Spoiler

HOW CAN U BE GAMER??
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE

sorry...only game I actually nerd rage about...
If you haven't played then you have no idea what we mean. BGII is, seriously, THE rpg. At least for me.
I wouldn't be nearly as into games if it weren't for that game. :\\

Seriously though. There are times I seriously consider playing it yet again. I've played it over 10 times. Played it several times through BG1-TOB with the same character. Dragon Age is good, the best in recent times, but it will only compare when a decent amount of player generated content is put into the game. BGII was just more game than dragon age is at this point. And I have to say the story in BGII was better than dragon age. This isn't to diminish Dragon Age's greatness, it's better than every other game I've played. Just doesn't beat BGII.

Plus, Viconia > Morrigan. No question.

I never really understood that complaint. How hard is it really to gather your party?

It seems weird to have your mage enter the Friendly Arm Inn and have the rest of the party (who were slaying the hobgoblins outside) suddenly appear in the inn with him.
