So what I mean is also that the sidequests feel less like monotonous...sidequests, and more like you making a difference in the world.

I think what you really mean is that the BG2 side quests made you feel more like an actual adventurer and less like an errand boy.

That's a good way of putting it... that's one of the main things I loved about BG2

Nothing will ever compare to BG/BG2(i always include them together). I spent thousand of hours(no kidding) playing and replaying with different characters/group composition or soloing.I made it to chapter 4 in bg1 with a rogue alone but was ultimately blocked in a corridor by 2 badass skeleton that i couldnt backstab or simply outmaneuver them lol.

Well enough of my preaching of the BG series. DA is great, there is no denying that. Awesome storyline, didnt even finish the game and i think its awesome and it keep getting better. Gameplay is really nice offering an hacknSlash in easy mode and the same feel of need of being a ****ing war strategist that BG gave in nightmare mode. There is a few flaws but what game doesnt. Im hoping a lot on the toolset for a ****load of fanmade content.

Also to keep on the track of what this topic seemed to have become aka discussion about the subquest, i do agree too that DA subquest are bland. They could have done much better than the blackstone irregular/magi something.

The story of DAO is awesone. The charactors are OK. But the game system, the magic and skills are worse than NWN. I've not played Baldur's Gate II.

Expect more skill/talent,magic and races will be added in the new patches.

I never got into baulders gate 2 , the charactors seemed really cool but I cant stand the ruleset used or the interface so I just let it gather dust , if it was useing the d20 system I'd probleby have enjoyed it since the story and charactors seemed great.

You know what I'd like to see? ... the BG series redone with DA:O technics :)

Even I know the BG stories by heart (I played the games up and down for weeks) I'd like to play them on a modern rig with some 3D buffs and stuff.

One thing I really enjoyed about BG:2 was the fact that the sidequests weren't simply fetch and return, or go kill X group of people. I also liked the fact that the sidequests were connected, and not obviously in some cases. I'm not too far into Dragon Age, but so far I'd say BG is a 10/10 and DA: O is an 8/10 in comparison.

I think that BioWare doesn't like sidequests. It was apparent, even striking, in Mass Effect: Great storyline and atmosphere but very poor sidequests. I'm not that far in Dragon Age but I began to notice that the sidequests, again, do not offer a proper side stories; they are only a means of getting more XP. I hope I'm mistaken.

I agree, I miss proper sidequests in DA:O that I found more in BG and BG2. They remind me too much of WoWs errands. I wish that Bioware would put in even half the amount of storyline and content into sidequests as the main quest has.

Btw, is Wardens Keep any good sidequest-wise?

I had quite healthy childhood. Imagine, I've never had measles, purple, mumps and other children's ailments, including playing WoW. However, I've heard enough from people who do (and I'm still failing to understand the reasons why the hell they do it). From those stories I know about the exclamation mark over heads of "Errandgivers". I saw it also in Sacred 2, that dumb buggy clickfest I accidentally played one afternoon. And doesn't DA:O use similar marks?

I don't know. I purchased it, downloaded it but it yet waits to be played. I wish to complete Redcliffe first and especially Orzammar where I expect quite a story, being a Dwarf Commoner.

I love the main plot line of DA:O, but I must say that the side quest richness of BG & BG2 are the winners for me, and the wider range of party members available. I think I actually prefer the main storyline to DA:O over the BG one however. I love the dark and morally grey story threads also, but it just cannot match the vastness of side quests of BG and BG2, or the range of interestingly varied party members. Plus it doesn't have a miniature giant space hampster in! haha

People don't realize that it was many times easier to create tons of content on a 2.5D game like Baldur's Gate 2. To create that much content on DAO would have taken over a year or more longer.

DAO had such an epic ending that I rate it higher than BG2. BG2 was my favorite RPG of all time until now.

BG2's ending can only go a couple of ways, while every choice you make in DAO seems to add it's own twist to your ending. The level of storytelling, therefore, is many times higher in DAO.

BG2 felt like a great Computer RPG made from D&D. But it still doesn't compare to playing the actual pencil and paper version of D&D.

Because of the ways that the ending changes in DAO, it more closely follows a tabletop RPG than any other RPG to date.

There's a good number of sidequests, I thought. The mages collective, the chantry, the mercenaries, and the thieves all have numerous quests. Those fit into the task category, granted. Additionally, each major area has sidequests that are connected to the main quest. Additionally, we have companion side-quests and side-quests for unlocking specializations.

I wouldn´t really call them quests at all. Stupid fetch and run assignments more.. I mean they were one of the few real dissapointments for me. For example some of the mercenaries "quests":

Find the deserters: Three times nearly the same looking guys, who say one sentence then attack.

or the condolences..

four women, who ran away.. wow.. great.

still too early to call for me.

BG2 always has a place in my heart. I still rate it higher. But then again it lacks the influence system this game has. It lacks any sex scenes. Only kidding- those are kind of cheesy- I'd prefer they just fade to black. For as dark as the Bhaalspawn storyline is, it's not nearly as dark as this game. This game has more of an immersion factor than BG2 ever will.

i just can't decide if it's better than bg2 this early. We'll see if it stand the test of time.

Image IPB A good point well made

Whoever said about the BG sidequests feeling like adventuring rather than running errands, is bang on. I'd give the BG series (seeing as you can play the entire thing with 1 char it's a series!) 11/10, it's that good. It was, and still is for me, the best RPG ever.

DA:O is a completely different game, though. The main story (which I'm still barely through) is immense, possibly better than the main one in BG  - however as a complete RPG it doesn't quite measure up. It might be sacrilege but I'd say it's not too dis-similar to Diablo (2) in the way the sidequests are more errand-y (nothing against Diablo, I love it). At the minute I'm giving DA:O 9/10 for the main story alone, but I don't think you can really compare it to BG...

All this talk of BG2 makes me want to play it again... but I can't until i've finished DA:O at least once. Hmm, could play BG2 and then play through DA:O again with a different class...

DA:O is great, but BG2 stands alone. (Not even Icewind Dale 2 stands next to BG2!)

DA:O is the best RPG that has been created to date.

It is really hard to find fault with it - and I am normally pretty critical.

It overwhelms BG/BG2. Don't get me wrong, BG/BG2 with the EasyTutu is alot of fun, and there are alot of mods, etc for it that make the game even better, but there are things that even a Mod cannot do.

Camera - I am spoiled rotten with a moveable camera. This comes from NWN, of course. I absolutely detest not being able to move the camera around in BG/BG2, or zoom in or out. It drives me bonkers.

Animations - I loathe BG/BG2 animations. I know, I know, they are from "back then" and this is really unfair. But it applies none-the-less. NWN and DA:O animations are fluid, and do not cause me to suspend belief. NWN2 has the cruddiest animations ever put into a D&D CRPG. Talk about jolting one right out of the flow!

Cut scenes - well, that is obvious, I guess.

And on, and on...DA:O is just so much more than BG/BG2 could ever hope to be. Back then, BG/BG2 was the best thing being offered, no doubt about it.

But they have been superceeded.

I really hope that Bioware gets a chance to run with their new IP. I am really looking forward to more.

I do not feel that I can objectively comment on which I feel is better for two reasons:

1. Nostalgia for BG2 inflating my opinion of it.

2. 'Newness' novelty of DA:O inflating my opinion of it.

Can't tell how much of each is influencing my decision, so...argh...can never make a decision anyway. :D

BG/BG2 for me is still better, though I havent finisdhed DAO yet. Also I like FR setting and DnD rules much more. I still enjoy DAO, but BG/2 as a whole package/game seems more deep for me.

Viconia is still the best party companion ever tbh. Closely followed by HK-47 and Shale. And then the rest off the DA, BG, Mass Effect and KOTOR companions can argue about off the rest off the spots.

I'd have to agree, though, that the side quests in DA seemed very "MMO-like"

And the whole "you have to gather your party before venturing forth" message had a tendency to pop up unless your entire party was glued to the area exit you intended to go through. So yes, I'd call it annoying when some party members had a tendency to take side-routes and thus forcing me to wait for them while listening to the waiting message.
