I'm interested in doing an all female playthrough in Mass Effect 1 and continue that story in Mass Effect 2 with getting all the male characters killed during the suicide mission. But I've been having trouble during the first citadel visit in ME1. For whatever reason I can't seem to avoid recruiting either Wrex or Garrus. I assume if you visit Barla Von and skip going to the clinic you can avoid recruiting Garrus but I still end up having to recruit Wrex. Can anyone explain to me what I'm missing or doing wrong.
P.S. Please, no how can you not recruit Wrex/Garrus comments. I love them both but I'm just trying to do something different for my next playthrough.

I don't think it's possible to avoid Garrus AND Wrex. You can skip one or the other, but you need one of them to find Fist.
Also, I think it potentially leaves you short a squadmate at Virmire. If you do Virmire before Liara, then right after you get to the bomb, you'd only have Tali available. For the reason you can't kill Wrex if you avoid Garrus and don't have Liara, I suspect this is impossible.
What you could do is recruit Wrex but not Garrus, make sure you get Liara before Virmire, and then kill Wrex on Virmire.

You need to recruit either Wrex or Garrus to get the "Take down Fist" mission which leads you to Tali and her info. But since Wrex is killable on Virmire (I personally can hardly stand to kill him there, I've done it for RP reasons but felt pretty ****ty about it) I'd leave Garrus behind and get to Virmire as fast as possible, kill Wrex and choose to save Ashley instead of Kaidan, that's about as close to an all female playthrough that it's possible to get I think.
However I think that Garrus will be all "Just like old times Shepard..." in ME2 even if you didn't recruit him in ME1.

I've heard the same thing. Wrex decides to follow you whatever you say to him if both Liara and Garrus isn't present on Virmire.

It's because you always need a party of three. So you send one marine off with the salarians, then take Tali and the other marine to the bomb... then you lose the other marine. At that point, if you didn't have Liara, or Garrus, or Wrex, you'd have a two-man party. So the game won't let you kill Wrex unless Liara or Garrus is available to fill that slot.
So, yeah, like everyone else has said. I'd do Therum, then Feros, then Virmire, and kill Wrex on the beach. (You can do the family armor quest first if you want the XP, I'm pretty sure it's still possible to kill him if you choose the right dialog options, but generally I'd advise against it just to be safe.) And send Kaidan with the salarians. Just so you can see femShep grab Ash in the fireman's carry, I think everyone should do that at least once.

Sadly, if you do not have Liara and Garrus, then Wrex will always back down no matter what (and he cannot be killed)
edit: I also think he just backs down if never recruited Garrus but have Liara as well, but I haven't tested that.

Recruit wrex, do liara mission. Then when you get to virmire, kill wrex, and leave kaidan. You have ashley, tali, & liara left
