I've been reading character-building suggestions, and I'm unclear about one thing. I'm going to try either the fighter/thief or the dual-class kensai/thief combination for a change, and the sources I'm reading are unclear about one thing. Several sources suggest dual wielding longsword and/or katana, and others suggest short swords (especially Cutthroat) for the speed factor. These are fine, but my question is this. A number of places suggest putting a proficiency slot or two in hammer so as to wield Crom Faer as an offhand weapon, while others say you can't backstab with anything but a thief weapon--longsword, katana, shortsword, dagger, etc. In particular, this would imply no hammer backstab, since thieves aren't proficient with hammer.
Which of these is right? Or are the hammer guys just suggesting it as an offhand weapon when NOT backstabbing?
Thanks,

Fighter/thief backstabbing with non-thief weapons?

Without mods you cannot backstab with anything that a single class thief without UAI cannot use.
These weapons are good and interesting for you:
Staves - best backstabbing weapons (Staff of the Ram, Staff of Striking, Staff of Rynne...)
Scimitar/Short Sword - Both for a certain weapon that adds an extra attack (Belm +2/Kundane +2)
Katanas - highest damage single-hand backstabbing weapons. This is usually uninteresting, but if you have a non-pure thief (with fighter levels for example) then a combination of Katana & Belm +2 will do more damage during an Assassination than anything else. Since you only get 1 Assassination per day, this is not very important though.
For meleeing purposes (besides backstabs) there are a number of different combinations, all with their benefits and their drawbacks, so without more information it's difficult to give advice for that. Yes, Crom Faeyr (the hammer you're talking about) is pretty nice as an off-hand weapon, but so is Belm, and you can backstab with Belm. Strength damage does not get multiplied during a backstab either, so there is no point in trying dual-wielding backstabs (unless you're going for another 1064, which is another topic entirely).

You never backstab with your offhand, so having a non-thief weapon in that hand is irrelevant. Crom Faeyr gives 25 str, which helps out backstabs a LOT. So it's a viable offhander for applying great pain.

It gives you + 14 damage, sure. But if I had to choose between the Staff of the Ram (average damage ~ 18, backstab damage ~ 80 + bonuses) and a Hindo's Doom/Crom Faeyr (backstab damage ~ 61,5*) backstab, I know what I'd choose.Matuse wrote...

I'm not saying it's a mistake to use Crom Faeyr. I am saying that two handed weapons (or summoned weapons like the Black Blade of Disaster) are generally better for backstabs.
* This is dishonest. A Hindo's Doom/Crom Faeyr combination can get damage bonuses too. I didn't mention them because a very big bonus, strength damage, has already been considered and I wanted to highlight that the bonuses will be bigger for the Staff of the Ram.
