Since I installed the patch my shield keeps turning into arrows???

The first game went fine, but now I have installed the patch and this is happening. My Soldier character has a two handed sword, and a sword n shield. Now if I switch to the sword n shield the shield is there, but as soon as I talk to someone it turns into a quiver of arrows. This is most annoying and the only way to get back the shield is to go into the inventory, remove the shield and put it back,,,,,, until the next time I speak to someone that is...
Can anyone explain this to me pls???

No, I have not d/l the toolset as yet, and for whatever reason it has stopped doing it, at least for now. Since I entered the wilds it seems ok.... weird.
