 Hey all,

Sorry if this has been said already but I couldn't locate anything. And I figure my questions might be specific enough to post.

So I'm trying to decide wether or not it's possible to host a PW. My requirements would be to host a relatively small server with a cap at 20. I'm expecting the people online to most likely to remain from 6-10, however.

I have a computer that I would like to host off of, with more than enough specs to do it (according to what I've seen around the net) and will host dedicated. The computer itself will do nothing but host and host persistently at all times. The OS is Windows 7.

My ISP is Verizon FIOS, and it's NOT business. Which I'm worried will pose a problem seeing as how verizon states in its terms of agreement that WEB based servers are not allowed. Would this even be considered a WEB based server since it's not an internet site? Also, the verizon box is basically a build-in router, and I do have other computers in the house connected to the internet, which make use of it minimally.

So what do you think? According to this, is it even possible to host a small PW? In your opinion, would Verizon disconnect me? Or anything else you may know, please share.

Thanks for any and all help,
ZP

What are your up/down speeds?  What specifically are your host computer specifications?  These two questions (and the answers to them) will go a long way to whether or not your plan is viable.

Additionally, are you planning on playing/DMing as well as hosting from this computer?

I host a campaign on 1 up / 15 down and with 6-10 players on-line it is fine on an i7 system.

On this computer I can also play/DM without issues (set core affinity for each task; 0 for the OS, 1 for NWNx4, 2-5 for NWN2Server and 6-7 for the DMC).

I doubt that Verizon would take an ape fit, but I suspect it's a case of 'don't ask don't tell' (heh).

Here are the PC specs according to my e-mail confirmation:

Processor: AMD® Athlon™ X2 5800+ 3.0GHz Dual Core 2 x 1MB L2 Cache

System Cooling: Alienware® Standard System Cooling

Power Supply: Alienware® 750 Watt Multi-GPU Approved Power Supply

Graphics Processor: Single 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800 GT

Memory: 4GB« Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 4 x 1024MB

Motherboard: Alienware® Approved AMD® 790FX Motherboard

Includes PCI-Express 2.0, BIOS Overclocking Utility, and Support for AMD Phenom Quad-Core Processors

Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows® XP Professional – DirectX 9 Only!

Includes AlienRespawn v1.0 Recovery Software!

System Drive: Single Drive Configuration - 500GB SATA 3Gb/s 7,200RPM 16MB Cache

Windows 7 is going to be installed on it before it's used. The PC itself will just be for hosting. As far as DMing and playing goes, I plan to do both of these functions but from separate computers in order to let the server PC handle the simple task of just hosting.

Here are my download/upload stats:

Verizon FIOS download speed is: 26.419 Mbps

upload speed is: 23.128 Mbps

This is according to the verizon broadband test.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for your help.
