I've seen some other topics like favorite gun, favorite RPG, or favorite characters so I figured I'd make one for all the music lovers out there.

List your top 5 Game Soundtracks. With samples if you like (especially for those obscure ones.)

Mine are in no particular order (can't say one is better than the others Image IPB)

1. Mass Effect 1
2. Final Fantasy X
3. Metal Gear Solid 3
4. KOTOR
5. Mass Effect 2

Assassin's Creed 2!

Like I said, Jesper Kyd should have made the Dragon Age 2 soundtrack.

1. Final Fantasy IX (PlayStation)
2. Ys Books I & II (Nintendo DS)
3. Final Fantasy (NES)
4. Grandia II (Dreamcast)
5. Road Rash (3DO - featuring Monster Magnet, Paw, and Soundgarden)
6. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Xbox)

As far as RPG Soundtracks go, I find that most western RPGs don't seem to care as much. Though I do like the Baldur's Gate soundtrack for example, the only track I find memorable is the opening title music. On the other hand, take any Final Fantasy and the music is much more prominent. When I listen to a Final Fantasy soundtrack, every track brings to mind vivid memories from the game. Not that western RPGs don't have good music, it just doesn't stand out as much.

Update: I forgot to state the reason I included a 6th.  5 and 6 in the list are pretty much a tie, and I enjoy them for the same reasons.  If I HAD to choose one I'd choose Road Rash because of it's historical signifigance as the first videogame (at least in the US) to have a soundtrack cd for sale at music stores.

The only JRPGs I've played are Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts and I agree they put a lot of effort into their soundtracks as they have about 90 tracks on them :)

Though it's all a matter of personal tastes, I think Bioware is very much an exception. ME, Dragon Age, KOTOR are all very memorable. Sometimes it's a design decision such as Fallout 3 where the emptiness is the soundtrack.

ME1 or ME2. No game I've played even comes close.

Ok, I have to give a nod to my console days. Castlevania 2. Amazing what Konami did with such limitations. Some of the best music I've ever heard on the NES, and one of its best games.

I can't say I noticed music too much in games, which is normally a good thing. Mass Effect 1 and 2 would have to be at the top of any list though.

Funny, I just posted on my blog today about some remastering of older game music that I'd been very happy to find.  As such, I'm glad to see that there are a few nice retro picks in here to complement the releases in the past year or two. Don't forget the older video games, please people!

In no particular order:
Doom - If you do not recognise the guitar riff of E1M1, then you should hang your head in shame. Remasterings or remixes of the soundtrack are available:
http://sycraft.org/c...dio/index.shtml
http://doom3.filefro...oundtrack;52796
http://doom.ocremix.org/main.html

Assassin's Creed 2 - A wonderful soundtrack. Enough said.

Mass Effect 2 - I prefer it over the original. The variety of the pieces and the sheer punch of emotion-laden sound delivered by tracks like Suicide Mission is fantastic.

Hexen/Hexen 2 - I don't like combining games, but the overall tone and theme of these two games is so similiar musically that it probably doesn't matter so much. There's even some crossover in the tunes. A remastering of  the Hexen soundtrack is also available from the first link for Doom above. These were what prompted my aforementioned blog post.

Ultima Underworld 2 - I've loved most of the tracks from this game from the first time that I heard them.  There are a couple that I don't like, but there are some really nice pieces in it.  If I could find someone to recreate these tracks anew with modern sounds, I'd be a very happy man.

As far as original score goes, I'm throwing myself on Oblivion. Jeremy Soule did good there.
