There are a lot of games I enjoy hating like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIII but are there any games that you would really like to enjoy but you just can't get yourself into them?

In my case, there have been a few games that have met this criteria, most recently being The Witcher.  I really should like this game, the atmosphere is great, it has some cool characters and it has a large world to explore but I just find the combat to be so dreadfully boring and simplistic that I can never get too far before I just quit.  Also, as a completionist I found the side quests to be completely uninteresting and a general waste of time.   Personally, I can't stand it when developers try to prod out the length of a game by adding a bunch of boring side quests that usually feel completely out of place and are a tremendous time sink.

What makes me feel even more guilty about it is that The Witcher 2 looks downright amazing and I probably won't be able to understand the plot without finishing the Original Witcher which makes me feel that I'll need to eventually go back and finish The Witcher just out of a sense of obligation.

The Halo series is one of the top series I should like but I don't. I don't really care for Half Life and Portal (Yet love Left 4 Dead...figure that out). I wouldn't say I dislike Dragon Age, but I don't get the hype. Same with Fable.

How much of the Witcher did you get through before you stopped?

Basically everything made by Bethesda, but their games simply lack something for me.

Attractive human beings?

Sorry. Was I not allowed to be that obvious?

The first village after you get out of the castle at the beginning.  The game seemed to lose any sense of direction after that and just became a boring collection of side quests that didn't feel like they had any relevance other than to waste my time.
It's a shame too.  I really should like this game as I love dark fantasy style RPGs but the game just feels like it's lacking cohesion.

What a great topic, Busomjack. I take back all my verbal flogging of you in the past.

To finish The Witcher is no different than finishing Dragon Age. Both games set their own pace, and both have pretty lousy side quests. The difference is, DA is more polished of the two, The Witcher is far more original.

The Witcher also makes the cardinal error of obligating the player to run from point A to B to C way too often. And this is in the main quest, not the side quests - which you can skip. That's the biggest problem with the game. It's also about 60-70 hrs long, like DA. So if you don't have the patience for it, neither game is for you.

What game did I feel guilty about skipping? GTA IV. I derided this game to no end. Then I tried it. It's good. It can be fun as hell. It lacks depth and thats ok, I wasn't expecting that.

Now, if I can just get past dismissing Call of Duty....

Neverwinter Nights the original. It reminds me of Runescape for some reason, and those are bad gaming memories. Hopefully, that feeling will eventually go away.

The Half-Life franchise seems so... flat. Literally. The first game was alright but the second game was like carrying several cinderblocks on your back while runing away from a pack of rabid wolfs. It was just dragging and tiresome to play it.

Are you talking about.... Shoot. How did that game even go again? It's like, you're outside... Then you're inside... Then you're in the... market district or something? And then you're at the seaside-village... Are you talking about the seaside-village?

Grand Theft Auto.

Look... yeah... the last one that was made to look like the West Coast circa 1990's was good... but the latest one with the Russian guy... I just didn't feel anything for the game. It was a very expensive version of Grand Theft auto with more graphics...and a whole lot of the same crap, over and over and over again.

I simply traded it in for Modern Warfare II.

Sorry... I like open games...but you know... there's just nothing new about GTA. Its repetitious garbage.

As for Bethesda. I will tell you what lacks in their games... a connection with the human element beyond 2D story telling. In other words... their simply skipped the whole relationship part of the RPG that has since been done. Its just you --- and thats that. Your roaming around. Your meeting interesting characters but your never quite settled into the story --- just a third wheel looking in.

They need to follow the scope of Fable and ME. Love interests you need to cultivate and keep. Thats whats missing in Bethesda games. I mean seriously. Whole worlds like Oblivian and Fallout 3...but you can't have relations or be immersed into your character's life beyond quests and a shakey main story?

Halo. Any game. I've played 1 to 3. Never got into them. I know they're good, don't get me wrong. But I don't get why the whole gaming community goes loco over them.

Ditto Modern Warfare 1 & 2. I can acknowledge their quality, but they just don't engage me. But then again, I'm not a huge FPS fan either.

Resident Evil 4. The first few games turned me off with their tank like controls, so 4's revamped control scheme and aiming system was a huge improvement. But... I just couldn't get into this game.

I'm going to have to say Final Fantasy 6... the most recent I played was the GBA version so I do not know if it modified anything (FF4 Advance certainly did) but I find the random encounter rate absolutely infuriating.

Also X-COM as I like quite a bit about it but the same time I don't like playing it because I don't feel like I can do anything in it.  (Basically I don't like the in game rules in regards to Combat and the overworld Time,a s my best playthrough of it I had  a good thing going only to get fired because I wasn't seeking out the enemy diligently enough, so that felt like a good four hours wasted which is something that drives me mad)

Interesting topic. For some of the games mentioned...

The Witcher: I'm still in Vizima and not liking it, but I have reasons for doing so. I could elaborate, but I've already given || multiple || reasons || why at my blog,  so I don't feel guilty about not liking it. I'm going to return to it at some point to see how it pans out and whether its much praised plot will make up its numerous glaring design flaws.

Modern Warfare 2: I detest it, but again I don't feel guilty about it.  It was a shameless cash-in on the original (which was great) and ruined pretty much everything that the first one did right.

The one game I might feel a slight amount of remorse for hating so much is Fallout 3.  Basically the horrendous cop-out of the main plot (which was fixed by Broken Steel) ruined the game for me and made it so I had no desire to ever go back. In accurately depicting a post-apocalyptic wasteland it suffers from the worst case of "32-bit-brown-colour-palette" since the original Quake, and the intermittent bugginess of the game (either running perfectly or crashing every 10 minutes), also helped to destroy the game for me.  I know there's so much content left for me to explore, but I simply can't bring myself to do it.

Half-life, i just didn't find it interestering... the Witcher had a great atmosphere and characters but the combat was beyond horrible... Any Bethesda games doesn't click for me... and i have tried Fallout 1 & 2, but i didn't like it...  Bethesda one is easy, i don't like RPGs with no companions... Fallout 1 & 2, not sure...

I don't get the hype with Dragon Age either anymore, i did do 3 playthroughs and like it then it turned bleeding boring. Mass Effect 1 & 2 i think i could replay infinite times..

I wouldn't exactly say i feel guilty, but it makes me feel a bit out of place when all my friends play those things, and i don't. It just explains that despite what is popular, people are different, and do have different preferences, personally i am extremely strict about movies, games and music, everything major has to click.

I'm on board with the lack of love for the Witcher. I have tried to play it four times now and always lost interest when I got to Vizima. The atmosphere and characters were absolutely fantastic but the combat and the fact I have to play it on my laptop just leave me feeling unsatisfied with it and bored. The bit that really gets to me though is that I love the Witcher books, they are some of the best books I've ever read and I just can't play this damn game. The Witcher 2 looks amazing.

Psychonauts never got any hype. Also, I'm ashamed that I couldn't bring myself to like Grim Fandango. I mean, it has quite a strong fanbase(or at least people that still like it) and I just couldn't like it.
