so, will there be other sword-staffs in the game besides the staff of parthalan? And will they have different animations/uses from other staves? And can mages wear armor? I want to play an arcane warrior and since mages can't use non-staff weapons these questions are very pertinent.

uhhh melee mages again....  I think you are hoping for too much.  Your mage will be a mage that CAN melee attack but dont expect him to be that good at it. As far a different animations and sound effects go: yeah right, they will be the same. I'm sure they will handle like a staff. Cant answer the mages wearing armor question but it prob has to do with requirements and wieghing the defence to penalties.. but who knows, they haven;t told us much about equipment/inventory

Since there appears to be at least two different ones (staff of parthalan and the unnamed staffed in the RTP trailer) I think it's safe to say it's a new kind of weapon that will have multiple models and stats.

It would make sense to only allow an arcane warrior specced

Mage use one, as lore says arcane mages used magic to augment their physical prowess

In Rise to Power there is footage of Hawke as both warrior and mage. If he's holding a staff, he's a mage. Two-handed sword, he's a warrior.

So the sword-staff we see in the trailers is actually an ingame weapon type that will be appearing in DA2 or is that just a weapon being shown in the trailers?

It looks dope as hell whatever its called.

The rise to power trailer has gameplay footage, what you see in it should be similar to what's in the game they sell us

Will there be more sword/staff life the staff of parthalan? Because I think there should be more of them like parthalan. It would be a fail if it's the only one of its kind. Because I really like the idea.

There's at least 2 of them. A double bladed one with a sword breaker and a fiery orb at the staff head, and a tanto style single blade with just roots on the staff head

What does the Staff of Parthalan look like?

I would have thought parthalan having a blade would require adjustments to stop hawke from accidentaly grabbing it's sharp end.

Off topic, but in The Witcher, Geralt has at least two execution moves where he grabs the sword by the blade and strikes the enemy with the pommel end.

Watching the RTP trailer again frame by frame it looks like one of the Sword-Staff weapons has a shorter handle and thus more resembles a sword. (Hence the confusion in this thread.) I wonder if There are sword-staffs with a variety of handle lengths.

In the Rise to Power trailer he is at one point using a Greatsword.  There isn't any confusion regarding that, but there does seem to be different hafts for the sword/stave type weapons.  Towards the end of the trailer the weapon he uses has a much shorter blade and more resembles the weapons from the Destiny trailer albeit minus the jewel attached to the haft.

Mage staves seamlessly move from melee strikes to ranged bolts based on the current target's distance from the caster.

If its ranged based on changing attack, what modifiers will the attack damage come from IE str. dex, magic.

Magic, same as if it's being used at range. The difference is visual for the most part....mostly. (every rule has its exceptions, after all)

Im sorry I was not clear on the quesstion, I thought if a mage was close to a target if would seitch to a two handed sword atack. I see that is not the case.  Before as a mage if you attacked with a wepon you had a lot of misses due to low dex and str on your arcane warrior. I just wanted to know if this was fixed with a new modifier for the mage to increase hits on target if using a wepon.

Necromancy is bad, you should know this. Did Oblivion teach you nothing?

Personally I'm going with the rumor that we get cross-classes, cuz that would be epic being able to finally balance out a war mage (warrior/mage cross). And thus swordstaves like the Staff of Parthalan would serve a larger purpose as a whole and be easily used how they are in the video, as both a powerful mage's staff as well as a kickass sword that a trained warrior could use to great efficiency.

It's just a staff. There are no spear-staves, or sword-staves in the game. Just staves.
