Assult Rifles or Sniper Rifles?
I probably won't go with Claymore just because the Scimitar is so much better. Image IPB

I'd go sniper rifle. Crushes the mattock vs armor on any class not named soldier and the mattock's main advantage of being more versatile shouldn't ever really come into play. Who cares that you can play the close range game better with it when you should be using your shotgun for that any way? The viper puts out more damage from further away and is a better choice unless you can't get past the sniper casting which also shouldn't be much of an issue on a vanguard and can actually be used to your advantage by allowing you to use powers on enemies that are technically out of range.

As I'm sure others will say, it depends on your style of play. However, I usually pick the Mattock simply because, without a scope, I can use it while moving if necessary. But I usually use the Evi. If you're using the Scimitar all the time except for sniping, then the Viper is probably a better choice, and eats through armor much better than the Mattock.

Edit: Bah! Sinosleep beat me to it!

Crap, I guess I did kinda forget about running and gunning with the mattock should it become necessary.

I go AR, for plenty of reasons.

I go Claymore every single time, but if I had to pick between AR and SR, I'd take AR - the lesser evil - just so the freaking Avenger Assault Rifle disappears from the cutscenes. Other than that I have no use for either weapon anyways.

To be honest, if You have Fire Power DLC then go for Assault Rifle training and simply use Mattock with your favourite shotgun (Geth Shotgun could be good)

I pick claymore every time too. Comparisons have shown that most of the shotguns are actually equal in damage anyway, so unless you are using the scimitar to strip defenses for warp bombs I challenge your assumption of scimitar being better.

But each to his own as far as shotguns go :).

Personally I'd take the mattock. I like being able to move and the slow time from heavy charge allows you to unload a LOT of bullets. Charge an enemy on low health so they go flying, and during the slow time destroy 2 nearby enemies with mattock head shots!

But still... *whispering* take the claymore.... The claaaaymmmooreeee.

I'll have to third it, take the claymore. That baby is pure beast.

As for Mattock vs Viper, I've done both and honestly they've both worked for me so it's really a matter of preference. I personally like the Mattock over the Viper since I'm not a fan of using Snipers on classes that aren't Soldier or Infiltrator. But then again, I play on consoles and auto-aim makes sniping a pain in the but for me since a Vanguard doesn't have scope slow-down.

Hmm. Seems like opinions are pretty mixed. I think I'll go with the Viper considering that I don't have the Mattock. :)

Damn, late to the party....

Anyway, I would have said AR, but only if you have the Mattock.

For me, casting power through SR scope is annoying. And I dont like not seeing the entire battlefield.

Another reason, there are some cases when you dont have time to switch weapons and you have to charge. The AR benefits from the point blank range bonus damage, the SR doesn't.

But yes, if the option is Vindicator Vs Viper, take Viper.

For me, the Viper just makes certain parts a lot easier where other weapons just wouldn't.

If I can Charge it, its no problem. If I can't Charge it, then the Viper is usually the better weapon for the job than the Mattock.

Sure you can't run and gun with it, but that's what the shotguns and Locust/Tempest are for.

Well, if you have the Locust and dont wanna get the Claymore, the Viper would be an easy choice cos the Locust is sort of an AR (easily replaces the Avenger)

I only have the base game plus all the Dr. Pepper promotions. I borrowed both ME and ME2 from a friend. Hopefully he doesn't mind that I used the proof of purchase on these forums. :)

Since you dont have DLC weapons - That should be easy ^_^ Sniper Riffle - Viper.

When I had this choice, I went Assault Rifles specifically for the Mattock as it's essentially an Assault/Sniper Rifle hybrid. The Vindicator would be a good choice too.

Vanguards only weakness if you can't charge is long range combat so pick Viper.

Viper, all the way. Unless you want a claymore, but you apparently don't.

Don't get me wrong, I love the vindicator, but assault rifles are the 2nd best choice, especially without the Mattock. If you're too far away for shotgunning, you're usually in good shape for sniping. If you're too close for sniping, you're usually set up for shotgunning. And you still have the Locust for edge cases (or perhaps you don't, but even so the Viper is better).

I choose the mattock. Its better then most shotguns against heavily armored foes(scions) when charging them with a decent rate of fire unlike pistols. Its also fun to use charge in combination with an assault rifle.

I always have went claymore simply because my vanguard is the only class i'd ever get it on and i like variety of weapons beween my characters. Truth be told tho I really prefer Evi on soldiers and vanguards. Claymore is ridiculous dmg but I just can't take only 1 round at a time for most missions.

If you dont have the mattock available I'd just go sniper rifles. Viper is a beast.

Claymore is OP on lower difficulties but on insanity the range and ammo loads of the eviscerator are a bit better in my opinion. As for bonus weapon I went with assault rifles, even before the mattock was released. Sniper rifles just dont mesh with my gameplay at all. But when you take warp ammo as a bonus power it helps tons. Add the locust and arc projector and shields don't stand a chance. On missions against harbinger - especially if your going all out with a level 30 me2 import? The collector ship can be brutal if you don't have weapons upgraded efficiently. In that scenario the particle beam shines.

All this advice and nobody has the guts to just come out and say it. Ahem.

You're a Vanguard, not a VanGIRL! I don't care if you use the claymore or the scimitar, you TAKE THE SHOTGUN, not some long range pansy pea-shooter! Man up!

I got hair on my chest just reading this jaw-dropping display of machismo.

Anyway, from what I can tell, most Vanguards take the Claymore, but if you really don't want to(and you're well within your right), then the consensus appears to be "go Viper."

It all depends on your playing style. For example - I play my Vanguard like a Soldier from ME1. The reasoning is thus:

1. I really don't like Adrenaline Rush. I realise it's useful, but it just doesn't sit well with me for some reason. Charge on the other hand gives me the option of well...charging in. It's fun, it gets you up close to the enemy, and IMHO is more useful overall.

2. The Vanguard has Shockwave or Pull (or both) which, if made into the area-effect versions, means the Vanguard has crown control abilities, particularly against swarms of Husks. The Soldier really lacks this, except with fully evolved Concussive Shot

This then means that the Vanguard has a wider option of bonus powers to choose from - generally I take Barrier to fill in the defensive weakness. After taking the Assault Rifle on the Collector Ship, the only real difference is that I have submachine guns instead of sniper rifles, but hey, that can be fixed with editing the coalesced file :-D
