If you are experiencing those things you do not have the resource pack installed correctly.
Please take the time to go to our BSN project page and read the threads there that include proper installation instructions and actual answers to your questions. There's a game help thread, a bug thread and a how to install thread that includes information which should make clear that none of those things are part of a working install of the mod.
You are playing the mod without the resources need for it to work being loaded correctly.
As for how to recruit the Lethe without the mage...try the Game help thread on our page.

In the meantime, for those of you who are interested in what comes next in the Malkuthian narrative you may be interested to know that in addition to ACT II there are several DT:CoM related projects currently in production.
1. DT:CoM: Dark Warden Origins - Description and a Warning.
If you are a someone who plays a "good" character. Dark Warden Origins may not be something you enjoy since it is a narrative designed primarily for those willing to embrace their inner demons and walk the path of darkness. There will still be content for those who choose not to do evil but the more virtuous you are the less of the new content you will see. Set during the Fall of Ostagar, this mod adds a series of small quests that introduces an interesting new twist to the Dragon Age Origins story while at the same time providing a unique perspective and experience which adds additional dialog options and quests to Dragon Age: Dark Times.
Click the picture below to go to the project page and learn more about DT:CoM: Dark Warden Origins.

2. For those of you who want to keep up with Act II development and get a sneak peak at what's in store for your Wardens:
Clicke the Picture Below to visit the ACT 2 project page.

3. In addition to this, the team is working with Immortality, the author of the Ser Gilmore Recruitable Companion mod, to create a Ser Gilmore specific quest as mini add-on to ACT I.
Click the picture to visit Immortality's Ser Gilmore Recruitable NPC project page.

4. An ACT I dialog update for Lealion and the Secrets of the Tevinter Warden mod companions is also being developed ladydesire.
Click the picture to go ladydesire's Lealion project page.
The eventual goal is to have active participation by as many of the community made companions as we can in the Dark Times so the team is eternally grateful to companion mod authors like Immortality and ladydesire who are willing to help add their talents and voices to the process of creating an ever more interactive Malkuth.
5. DT:CoM - Hidden Sanctuary - Shodushi, the Dark Times Dev team member and author of the upcoming World of Grone standalone mod is preparing a mini dlc add-on to ACT I which solves the mystery of the blocked door in Mount Kora and gives a glimpse of things to come.
Click the picture to learn more about World of Grone

6. DT Shattered War Tie-In - While I am not at liberty to discuss the details of what's been worked out, AmstradHero and I have been cooking up an idea or two for tie ins with his upcoming the Shattered War standalone campaign.
Click the picture below to go to AmstradHero's Shattered War Campaign project page.

Stay tuned for further updates from the Dark Times Dev Team.
Til next time,
Quest

First, I am NO computer person. I load games in and play them. If I download this will it go automatically or do I need to know "dap files, ext files, etc?
Second, will this mess up my Dragon Age game as it is right now? I've played all the downloads and Awakenings.
Third, I've read the thread and it looks like you may need to have that PHD in computers to figure out the problems if it doesn't download.
AM I DOOMED??
I so want to play this. ( I hope you don't have to know to much computer stuff to do it.)

In answer to your questions....no you are not doomed and it does not require a PHD in computer science to install. While installing any mod does require some basic knowledge of how to use Daupdater or Damodder to successfuly install, the majority of the instialtion probems occur when people do not actually take the time to read the instructions.
1. Download the version 1.02 build.
2. When unziped it creates two files. A dazip and a file called RESOURCE_FILES.RAR.
3. Double click on the dazip to activate Daupdater's install. This should take a while since it's such a large file.
4. Once it says installed. Follow the Read FIRST directions and unzip the contents of the resource folder to the folder path which is given in the readme.
5. Download the 1.06 fixpack udpate. Unzip and install contents into the folder designated by the included readme. It may ask you if you want to overwrite some files. That is fine. The content in 1.06 updates your 1.02 build and there are a few files that need to be overwritten.
6. Play the game by loading a save that is post Broken Circle Quest. You will know the mod is installed if it appears on your DLC tab and when you load a save you get a new quest called Urgent Summons. Read your quest journal to play.
It appears that the majority of problems come from the fact that users neglect to actually unzip the resource file and just place the .RAR directly into an overide file, thus preventing access to the needed resources.
As for the "Will it mess up my dragon age" question. Other than adapting the party picker stage to include the new companions we do not overwrite or change a SINGLE core resource file. In layman's terms this basiacally means that we don't change any aspect of your original game while at the same time providing lots of new content.
While the resource pack is an additional step required that is not usually required in installing mods, Dark Times ACT I exceeded the file size limit for a single dazip so we had to find an additional way to get you the content.
Hope that helps,
Quest

I'm downloaded this and started playing it. It appears to be a very nice mod which is high quality. The problem is that the party picker does not seem to be modified properly (everything else seems to work). When adding the mage or the ash warrior they don't appear in the picker (the mage does appear in the party but not the picker). This causes some problems. I used the daupdated and I'm pretty sure I unzipped the files in the right directory. Please advise

We have a thread about that on our project page. It is not our mod per se but a conflict with another mod you have installed which adds a companion. The 1.06 update includes ladydesire's char_stage which has 33 of the community made companions on it. Without help and the given consent from the authors of companion mods it is impossible to add in their companions to the party picker stage. We have done our best to ensure that we included as many tags as possible.
Luckily, the solution to your problem is fairly easy but it requires you taking one extra step.Info on what to do can be found here:

Thanks for the reply. I will make sure I follow your directions. This looks like a fantastic addition to a game I've be playing for almost a year now.
If I didn't have to do family things and work I'd be on this right now. I, unfortunately, will not have a chance until Sunday. Oh, the pain!

From what I've seen, your party should be at about level 10 or 12 before attempting this mod; otherwise, you might get overwhelmed. You'll also need to hang onto that spec point if you want to take advantage of the new specs introduced by this mod.
