I'm Currently playing Baldur's Gate + Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion and I recently came across a bug.
When you reach Baldur's Gate you will eventually be poisoned and will have to go on a quest to get the antidote, from Lothander and Marek. The problem is that there is a game breaking glitch in which sometimes they do not appear where they should be, in other words, Lothander is not in the Blade and Stars inn and Lothander is not in the Blushing Mermaid.
a quick google search showed me that this problem that I am not the only one who had it.
I did eventually found a way around the bug, but rather then keeping it for myself I decided to share how it can be fixed should it happen
------------------------------------//-----------------------------------------------
First of all you need to have the cheat console activated, in order to activate cheats you need to:
Open your game directory in Windows Explorer or My Computer, which is probably something like:
C:\\Program Files\\Black Isle\\Baldur's Gate\\
Find the file
"baldur.ini". If you have your computer set up to hide file extensions,
it may just appear as "Baldur". There will be more than one file with
that name, but the one you want will probably have an icon that looks
like a page along with a gear or cog, and will be listed as having the
File Type "Configuration Settings" if you look at it in "Details" view,
or right click on it and hit "Properties".
If you haven't changed your file associations, if you double click on the icon for that file, and it should open in Notepad.
Add a line that reads:
Cheats=1
in the section labeled "[Game Options]". Save the file in Notepad's File menu, and close Notepad.
Run the game. Hit Ctrl-Tab in the game to open and close the console where you enter the cheats.
The first code you should use is:
CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys()
This will allow you to use the Ctrl-character cheats.
---------------------------------------------//-----------------------------------------------
Now here's what you do, after you get the gaes scroll go to the Blade and Stars inn on the second floor, press CTL+TAB to open the cheat console and type:
CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("Lothan")
But Lothander is still bugged and he will not speak with you, exit the entire building and return to him he will tell you:
"You fool you asked the wrong question"
Go to the fair in the city and go to the same tent in which you spoke to the diviner
Ask the diviner who can cure Lothander's Geas
now return to lothander, his bug should be fixed, you will be able to talk to him and give him the scroll
now go to the blushing mermaid where you were supposed to meet Marek, if you're suffering from the same bug I did he is also not there, once again use the CLUA console and type:
CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("Marek")
he will appear but he will still be buggy, he'll introduce himself as if it was the first time you met and leave you disapper immediately. You have to kill him before he disapears, and take the antidote from his dead body, this may take a few tries, but you'll eventually get it.
After that all you have to do is drink the antidote, unfortunantly the quest never actually "ends" and you don't get the experience points for it, this is something I have not found a way to fix
this bug drove me crazy but I eventually got fixed it, I am not posting this here hoping it will help someone in the future
Baldur's Gate Lothander and Marek bug how to fix it

This quest will bug out if you kill Marek before you should i.e. you kill him at the first meeting because it is talking to him at the last meeting that actually removes the poison.
IMO If you get the poison after killing Marek then the best solution is to make a save before going up stairs and open that save in Shadowkeeper... find the global SPRITE_IS_DEADMAREK... change the 1 to a zero.. and you are all good.

I'm having this same problem too. I thought it'd be cool to try n kill him before the quest started, and now I'm screwed. Just drinking his potion isn't working either. I have downloaded Shadowkeeper and Gatekeeper, but I can't figure out how to make this work again. Tips???

Check all relevant files in one (or both) of the editors Near Infinity or Infinity Explorer, that will tell you exactly what is going on.
Pressing L should give you the area number. If not, look in the World Map part of the two editors. Then check the NPCs section, then check the town script.
Now for some help from IESDP and its BG1:TotS Area Files List

aw thanks man. that totally pointed me into the right direction. Sword Coast Keeper helped edit the program too. Saved me from having to restart the game after so much work xD

Just wanted to chime in and say thanks OP for posting this, I just encountered the same bug.
I tried all the other fixes people tried (after googling a bit), but your method works and was the least intrusive method (ie, not using shadowkeeper etc).
Thank you!
