US schools typically have each child learn literature and writing, math, science, physical education, social sciences, and art. The better schools will have classes in foreign languages, economics, advanced chem and physics, theology/philosophy, and 'computer science.'
One of the things that distinguishes the American system from others is that you're never expected to specialize outside of certain programs.
