Seems pretty clear to me. If not, then why would cassandra settle on talking to Varric when she could talk to the champion himself/herself?

I don't know, to gauge whether or not she wants his help.

EDIT: We definitely know she wants his help, from the RtP trailer. If he's dead...what's the point? Why does she care about a dead guy?

my guess is that the chantry wants to know exactly what they are getting into so they sent cassandra to assess the situation.

Probably missing, the Rise To Power trailer has Varric mention how the chantry needs Hawke to end the war, not needed, indicating that Hawke is still alive.

My guess: Hawke goes on a suicide mission/expedition/something and is out of contact for a long period of time. Cassandra chases after him for the final segment of the game, which is not Varric telling a story but the actual real events. That's just my theory anyway.

Hawke dies or goes missing at the end?

Only if Obsidian is doing DA3.

We know Hawke dies/disappears because that's how every Bioware RPG ends!

If only Cassandra were savvy enough to look at Hawke's Facebook account. It has her decade long journal and her current location -- though it's possible the entire interrogation is because she digs Varric.

Probably because Hawke is Mr. Super Important Champion Man by the time she needs him. I mean, you don't go up to the King/President/Prime Minister/whatever and ask for their life story before formulating your petition...that'd be sort of rude and presumptuous. Cass is doing her research.

Or maybe she doesn't know where he is or how to get an audience with him or something. I dunno. Could support the "goes missing" theory. But hard to get help from a dead man so I'd rule that one out.

It could be similar to Alpha Protocol where the Hero is being interrogated by one of the villains throughout the story and each dialogue leads into part of the story, and then the last part takes off from the interrogation. Don't think i explained that well, but i haven't had any coffee for 3 hours.

Is Varric's interrogation confirmed as the ONLY narration?

The only thing that can be surmised is that Varric isn't in Hawke's party at the start of the game and as everyone else said, that (s)he is alive

If Hawke were dead, why on earth would Cassandra be interrogating Varric? Cassandra needs Hawke's help, therefore Hawke is probably alive - unless you think Cassandra wants zombie Hawke to come to the rescue or something. I can see Hawke being temporarily MIA as a possibility - just not the death thing.

Actually, at the end, Victoria Principal finds Hawke in the shower.

Edit: 50 "old age" points if you get this reference.

Didn't they throw everyone off by having Patrick Duffy filming an "Irish Spring" commercial?

Season 9's ending was almost as bad as the series finale, especially when we found out it was only a mirror.

...but I don't want those old points for knowing this stuff. Darn it!

Yeah, the series ending was almost (ALMOST) as bad as the one for the Sopranos
