How do i kill this high dragon in the mountain top ??  i used miss direction spell but doesn't work.  shield spell doesn't take effect sometimes.   i don't have the freeze cone spell yet.    I do have the game at insane level but this is the first time i had this much trouble.   Closest i got to killing this dragon was about 1/2 of its hit point taken out.  Posted Image

First thing I suggest is wait until you are 18+ lvl before calling it down for a scuffle.

Next, Cone of Cold is an excellent choice, as are taking Shale and/or Dog for melee as neither can be swallowed. Ranged attacks are good, as well as choosing a decent place to hold the battle. Personally, I like the area just before you enter to see the Guardian as the walls make decent cover if desired.

What combination of characters are you using? I usually go down the old fashioned route and use a Tank (dog seems to tank dragons the best), with two mages (morrigan and wynne) healing the tank, and usually myself as a third mage and/or an archer (if i'm a warrior/rogue), then slowly just grind the dragon down, if you keep the mages to pure healing (just main healing spell should be enough) and damage confined to their staffs you shouldn't need to use any lyrium pots, especially if you get the two mages to cast rejuvenation on each other whenever possible.

The key is to avoid being chomped. In my experience it only chomps someone who is melee attacking and as long as you avoid that you can wear it down. So an easy win with any group is to use all ranged or magic attacks, plus a decent source of healing - Wynne or pots. Warmth balms help, too.

Or let Shale draw all the aggro (Stone Roar and Taunt) - as Elhanan said, she can't be chomped.

I pretty much killed the High Dragon with only Morrigan and Shale once. Given the right crystals (and maybe Rock Salve, I thnk) Shale just keeps chugging away while Morrigan just kept pumping out the heals and the Cone of Colds/Winter's Grasps. Got through a few lyrium potions, but apart from that, those two could've kept going all day. My crappy PC rogue and Leliana pretty much fainted at the sight of her. But I suppose two companions with decent ranged attacks would have been some help (Lel was dual wielding). If you've not got Cone of Cold (seriously? Ten minutes on the naughty step for you!) then I suppose Wynne might be the better than Morrigan.

I ALWAYS destroy that thing EASILY. Maybe it's cause I have it on Casual generally? I might change to a higher difficulty on my next playthrough though. Maybe.

There's a video in the link in my signature that might help if the above advice doesn't do it for you.

I just have a healer and have the rest on bows. Stay out of range and grind it down and have the healer heal any one up that needs it. Easy enough IMO.

I play on Nightmare and use both Wynne and Morrigan, making sure they both have Cone of Cold learned prior to the fight. Doing that, I can kill it with no one dying, even at sub 15 lvl.

If someone gets grabbed dirty fighting can drop them too. Still though, I find cone of cold to be the most effective way to deal with that...

I have nightmare difficulty setting and cone of cold doesn't do anything to that dragon.  and that hex spell really doesn't do that much either.  Shale can heck at it but he doesn't do enough damage each time and the dog doesn't have enough hit points and gets killed fast.    and my main guy with 1000 hitpoints gets bitten and thrown and that does like 150 hitpoints of damage with each bite.  and after he is thrown off the Mouth of the dragon, he has like 10% hitpoints left....Posted ImagePosted Image

Few ideas: Be sure to keep Magic score high for all mages to boost spellpower, and have all possible McNuggets stay to the rear flank of the dragon to avoid being chomped. Greater Warmth balm is handy.

Have Shale wear mixed crytals for this fight: Fire for armor, and another for attacks; recommend Natural or Spirit. Use Stone Heart and Precise Strike initially, and consider going into Aura mode if below 50% health.

I am not a fan of the Hex line myself, as it can take long periods for follow up attacks. Walking Bomb may offer some good dmg every round. Telek weapons is a good buff for party, esp Shale and Dog.

Nothing is working, this dragon will occasionally just sit there and let me hack at it but just Not long enough to kill it. one time i had its hitpoint to like 60 but then it started to breath fire and hit me with its paw again...and my guy died.

Weapons with high armor penetration seem to work best for me. I have Oghren equipped with a Forgemaster's maul. Having a healer mage is a must too. All melee fighters should poison-coat their weapons, and should toss grenades as often as possible.

Swords usually work.

Magic can help.

Points for beating it to a pulp with your fists, though.

True story, I once froze the Archdemon with Cone of Cold. Twice.

Also, use bows on the High Dragon. Bow, AoE spells (Blizzard and Tempest).

Okay this works for me at lvl 12 Nightmare. Just before the Gauntlet entrance (casting distance from HD) I use Morrigan to ****** her off with Force Field. I have two warriors (all buffs up) bash at it to maintain aggro. Post Morrigan/Leliana far away enough for it's fire to be irrelevent. Activate Leli's SoC and Aim/Supressing Fire and have her rock all the + ranged critial gear I got. I micro between Warden (2-H) and Morri whose spamming hexes and primal spells. Your tank (Alistair/Shale) should be dead or almost dying along with the HD. The key is keeping tank alive, and DPSing with Morri/Warden. Leliana is on auto attack/debuff hitting lots of criticals. After 5-10 minutes your Warden or Alistair should be stabbing it in the head.

The key to winning is to watch your positioning. There is a side entrance back to the temple. Put your tank at the mouth of the 2 walls leading to the side entrance. Place your archers and mages as far as possible from the tank. This will prevent the dragon from chomping and stomping! With the chomping and stomping out of the equation, the fight is no different from fighting the "other" dragon who is also rooted to the spot. ;)

Apply plenty of warmth balms and equip all your characters with healing potions.

Put it on casual and put fire resistant armour on everyone, fire cystals on Shale, and fire resistant collar and kaddis on Dog and cover them in warth balm. Then set traps, get lots of icebombs and bombs and when she gets to you in the open run for the ruined building and pin her down from there. You can either attack her with ranged weapons and magic or she cames at you. She cannot turn as well when she comes for you in there. Try and take her down with ranged weapons and magic. Use Cone Of Ice and ice magic. Use Frost Weapons.
Sometimes you can sneak round the outside and she tries to attack you from inside. You can hide on the outside
and snipe her.

Meleeing her works but is not as good.

I have Shale, Morrighan, and Zevran or Leliana usually. Dog tends to be good for fighting dragons.
Dragons cannot pick him or Shale up.

Don't try on other dificulties. It just is not worth it inmo.

Works even on Nightmare:

Get your tank, use Shout, let him autoattack the dragon, the rest splits up and autoattacks the dragon.

Seriously, works. You don't even need any additional items.

Um, no, don't take that post seriously.  Shale as tank is an easy way to win the fight because she can't be chomped but she'll still need healing.
