The silver sword is kind of crappy, it gives you SR 20, but SR doesn't stack with itself, and the Spell Resistance spell gives you more than 20, it gives you ability bonuses, but they don't stack with other ability bonuses, so exactly how am I supposed to benefit from INT+4 if I already have an item equipped that gives me INT+8? Also, implementing this weapon as a sword is a bad idea, cause it's a melee weapon, which causes all those annoying attacks of opportunities in combat, wasting your current action (despite Obsidian's claim that attacks of opportunity are a free action, they are NOT) and dispelling invisibility. Also, what's this about an enhancement bonus? Exactly why would a wizard need an enhancement bonus? Has anybody ever seen a wizard uses a melee weapon in combat? Just stupid. On the other hand, the sword was originally supposed to give 1 lvl 7 and 1 lvl 8 bonus spell to wizards and sorcerers, which would be great, but of course Obsidian cut the real deal and gives you this useless crap instead. So I went ahead and changed the sword to my liking, it's done through the scripts i_silver_sword_aq and i_silver_sword_ua, I also changed the base item to shortbow to prevent attacks of opportunity, extremely annoying. Check this out:

Removed all the useless properties and readded bonus slots Obsidian cut for some reason. Now the weapon is a real deal!

I never wield the silver sword with any character. Crafting my own custom weapon or picking up a staff that casts various spells is more useful. The only handy ability for a mage is that shard attack, though it is of limited use by that point. The enhancement bonus is the only useful thing, actually, since I think it raises AB on touch attacks.

Hmm would have been better is they considered ditching the "Sword" as a solid requirement.
That way if you were a mage, Cleric or Thief, you could be asked to "reform" the weapon, into a base type you could use.
Raiper, Great Axe, Warhammer, Staff, hell why not Heavy Crossbow (unlimited Crystal ammo)?
Just retain all the usual properties in addition...
Makes a whole hell of a lot of sense to RP your true character if you EXPECT to use this weapon, then to have to use a 3rd party program to fix your missing skills to maximize this NEW WEAPON dropped in you lap the first run through.
Generic first run through reaction: "WTF? My WF, TWF, PC, ITWF, GWF and all related feats for weapon X is now useless cause it's not for "The sword of Gith"... GRRR!!!
That's the Dev's making you conform for having uber weapon Gith, or you choose not to use it.
I just got "The Complete Craftsman" and haven't used it yet. I hope this will recreate the enchantment abilities of original NWN before they gimped things for NWN2...
I used to have some kick-arse gear!

I've seen a Wizard with a sword. Several. Played them. Eldritch Knight anyone? And the quintessential Wizard weapon is the staff (melee weapon).
Anyway, you can craft more powerful weapons, so if you want an uber weapon, craft it.
Any character can use the Silver Sword, it's an "universal sword". It only happens to benefit from longsword feats (Weapon Focus and Specialization, Improved Critical...), but you don't need to reform it to use it.
And about AoOs, I don't follow you. I don't know what that has to do with melee weapons. You don't need to attack with it if you don't want, you can simply have it equiped for its passives.

It's the silver Sword of gith because Gith used a Silver Sword, not a sling, quarterstaff or other weapon. In other news, I found Drizzt's light hammers Twinkle and Icingdeath.

Some wizard with a sword. I've never heard of this guy, but apparently he likes to meddle in others affairs. forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/File:Elminster2.jpg
