I've got a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop with 4 gigs of ram, and some sort of Intel graphics card. I bought KOTOR online yesterday from Direct2Drive and downloaded it to my laptop. The game is patched up to date. Whenever I start the game, it goes through the Lucas Arts, Bioware, and Darth Malak screens, then the game crashes. How do I fix this problem!? I've attempted the Windows XP Run as Administrator technique, but it failed to work. HELP!!!

Go here:

C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\swkotor\\movies

and rename

biologo.bik

leclogo.bik

legal.bik

I just put a 1 in the name. If it doesn't work, you can just take the 1 out and it'll be back the way it was. This is the only fix I know of. If your computer is like mine, you may have to rename your movies folder with a 1 or something in order to get past certain cut scenes.

I don't know why we have to deal with this and it sucks, but it's the only solution I've been able to find. This one actually works. When I hit a cutscene that I have to skip, I just look it up on Youtube if I really wanna see it. Hope that helps.

That didn't work either. It crashes instantly. I have no idea what is keeping the program from running. It does give me a yellow circle by video card when I scan my computers hardware. I just want to play the game lol. Whenever the game crashes, it says something about the proper resolution. I've changed the resolution to run the game and that didn't work. I've also tried running it through 3D Analyze, but I'm not sure what to do with that.

I'd guess that your graphics drivers aren't compatible with whatever runtimes KOTOR needs to run.

Is it onboard video or an actual card? An Intel graphics card is probably very generic either way...

I run my Steam copy flawlessly in Windows 7 (currently 32 bit, 32 bit vs. 64 bit is a large consideration for program compatibility.) with up-to-date drivers on my aging Nvidia GTX 275.

I'd consider your graphics card and/or drivers to be suspect given the information you provided.

Which intel graphics chip do you have? It runs on a x4500M.

The only problem I have now with KOTOR in windows 7 is whenever there are cut scenes I get a lot of black screens that flicker and sometimes it even seems to stop and display my desktop and I have to click on the icon on the task bar to get back to the flickering black screens. Eventually the cut scenes do play but it sure takes a while and ESC only seems to work once the cut scene is actually playing if I want to skip it. Other then that the game seems to run good enough for another play through.

Edit: Oh, and I have to start the game in "run as administrator" mode or I get a securom conflict.

I know a very good fix, tht stopped all crashing (win7-core 2 duo-2gb ram-9600gt):

****THIS ONLY WORKS WITH NVIDIA VIDEO CARDS****

Step 1- go to where you installed the game.

2- find a file named "swkotor" that is labeled as a configuration setting file.***Create a Back up of this file***

3-Open the file (it opens as a txt notebook file) and add to the "[Graphics Options]" this line: "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1"

(without the "")

4- Save and Quit

5- Play and have Fun

Thank for the info. I keep crashing on cut screens running Win7. My other issue was the game wouldn't load. When I clicked on a saved game the load screen came up and just hung. I'm trying to play off my old CDs. I patched it up to 1.03. Is the streme version any better at dealing with newer system? Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks alot aallvveess, your fix worked like a charm. But, what exactly does it do? Will it take anything out of the game?

The only impact it should have on the game is performance, but since the alternative is that the game crashes, there's no reason not to use it.

First, uninstall KotOR if it is still installed, then go to the Microsoft download website and download the latest Direct X 9.0c redistributable, NOT the SDX as the SDX I believe only has the latest direct X and the redist includes all previous versions. Windows Vista and 7 use newer Direct X versions, 10 and/or 11 depending on your system, and for some older games, like KotOR and its sequel, it needs the old 9.0c. Then go find your KotOR setup file, if irt is on your disk pop that in the drive and DON'T install it if an autolauncher pops up, just close the autolauncher and explore the disk and right click the setup file and run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 2 or 3 and run it as administrator, then, google a KotOR vista fix and you should find a new Mss32.dll file, backup your old one and replace it with the new one, then, make sure the swkotor.exe file and the launcher.exe is rin in compatibility mode as windows XP service pack 2 or 3 (whatever compatibility you installed it as) and both are running as administrator, then load it up and aside from the movies loading real slow it should work.

The problem is indeed in the movie files, especially if you have changed the resolution also...

Seriously, this really sucks. I really wanted to to play the games once again and this is what I'm getting. Can't play. I feel ripped off.

They should have released a patch or something. After all we support them by buying their games.

So I got it working perfectly.

First of all I have to thank Reiyichi for proposing me to run the setup and the game in windows xp compatibility mode.

So here what I've done.

1. Installed the game in Windows XP Compatibility Mode (as Reiyichi pointed out).
2. Replaced the Mss32.dll with the fixed one.
3. Installed Directx9.0c Redistributable.
4.Installed ATI Tray Tools.
5.Ran the game in Windows XP Compatibility Mode.

It works like a charm without having to skip either the cutscenes or lower resolutions and such.

I'm having a whole lot of trouble with my KotOR. I have it on four disks (not the Best of PC), it installs great, I can play the game, yadda yadda yadda...

But when I go into the swkotor.ini folder, and try to type in EnableCheats=1, it says access is denied whenever I'm saving the folder. I'm the only person on my computer here, so it's not like I'm not the administrator. I have a Dell Inspiron 15 that runs on Windows 7, if that helps.

Help meeeeeeeee!!!

I did everything suggested and it didnt work until i disable visual themes etc in the compatibility window.  It did crash before i visit a planet and the videos played, but when i reloaded it worked.

Of course, I played through, and malak cast plague on me right before he died, causing me to die mid cutscene, thus losing the game and not allowing me to go back.  RAGE.

OKAY! SO I took the time not to flip out, also, I followed everything to a T! Except the ATI since I use nvidia. Anyways, so it was almost running perfectly, it kept minimizing and flickering which i did not mind, as I was more interested in if it would crash or not. So, I get to the first movie, opening movie, skip it... and BAM! crash!. Like I even bought that damn the registry thing in hopes of it working... So, like what da hell man! I cannot believe that a company would still sell their old products, with this many problems. The world changes why cant the software change to meet the new hardware?!

Is there anything else out there! I have done just about everything, short of throwing salt over my left shoulder spinning in a circle and crying in the corner...

I have the 4 disc edition, please someone, ANYONE, have an answer?!

Okay, I lied. So, I went into the compatibility tab of the file. And just went to town. I clicked on all of it, disabled the visual themes, run in 256 colors, etc. The whole 9 yards, seemed to work. No more crashing, no more anything. Kind of felt like what I had to do with AoE, feels like I had to close explorer to get it to work.

Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks to Reiyichi, and michael1983. SHOUT OUT HOMIE!

I'm running KOTOR on a windows 7. At first it crashed on startup, but then I disabled the opening movies, and it works fine now except that it consistently crashes. Not at any particular point, just randomly. Though I will say it does seem to happen more often during combat than when I'm just walking around. And when the game crashes, it doesn't even show up in the taskbar. I'm all up to date on the patches, and the game runs, I'd just really prefer not to keep restarting it.
