Hi folks. I have a five year old Alienware laptop on which I play NWN2. I was thinking of upping the sound (which is pretty good) element a bit. Also, in the future, I plan on buying a desktop and using my HDTV for a monitor.

So I'm looking for something that offers quality sound and is not too over the top. I saw this:

http://www.buy.com/p.../211242145.html

but I'm more of a wannabee Audiophile than an actual one. So basically something that will sound pretty good (doesn't have to be super loud), is not too expensive and is well suited to NWN2 play.

Surround sound is fine and wireless would be pretty good too. But I don't even know if NWN2 can be surround sound or not.

In any case, any advice from anyone who knows anything about sound systems would be great!

Thanks.

One advice would be make sure you have a decent soundcard first. Maybe you can borrow good headphones then you can evaluate your card because your sound won't be better than what your card delivers (well it could be improved but that would be too much work compared to get a better card).

Definitely sound advice... (pun intended). Image IPB

I'm not sure what kind of sound card I will end up with. But these speakers could be a long term thing and survive the coming and going of many soundcards. So I don't want to make that a limiting factor.

Also, I would like to use them for watching movies and playing on the PS3.

Any more advice on the road to travel down is much appreciated. I only have about a week more to decide before I lose the chance to have someone bring it to me from the U.S.

I just bought these Creative speakers when my eight year old Klipsch 2.1 set died. I decided not to buy another subwoofer-satellite system because I would rather have the leg space under my desk and didn't really need all that bass for computer gaming. I don't listen to music over my computer; I have a dedicated audio system for that. I think the Creative speakers sound great and have adequate bass, though they cost more than the ones you listed. They have the headphone jack, auxiliary input and volume/bass/treble controls easily accessible on the desktop.

To be honest, those altecs are butt-ugly, though they may sound great. That they are reduced from $100 to $40 also tells me something. Do you really want a 10" (case diameter) subwoofer sitting on your desk? Or to crawl under your desk every time you want to adjust the speakers or change inputs? I had a 2.1 Advent set years ago that required that. I still have it, sitting in a closet gathering dust.

Thanks.

My upgrade is going to be a desktop with my monitor as my HDTV. So I'll have a nice pretty screen to play NWN2 on. However that would mean, I think, that I would be putting my sound system on the TV rather than the desktop, right? So I think I'm looking at a surround sound home theater kind of thing, no? Also, I would probably sit on the sofa with wireless keyboard.mouse.

As for those speakers, I have shelves within easy reach to my left so I can put a subwoofer there.

Ah, I understand, sounds like a nice setup. I suggest putting the subwoofer as close to the center of your listening area as possible to avoid having the bass sound like it's coming from one side. Audiophiles often say that bass is non-directional, but that's only true for really low bass, below about 100 Hz. I doubt the crossover (the frequency below which the sound is sent to the subwoofer) is that low for these speakers. Experiment and see (er, hear).

So you think this is a good idea then? I don't really need to go for the home theater thing with lots of speakers and a receiver? If it is connected to my HDTV, it will be used for movies, PS3 etc. too.

Also, I plan on getting a video card for my desktop that has HDMI. For a sound system coming from my TV, should I be considering an HDMI connection for the speakers? I guess the sound and video will come from my desktop to my TV via HDMI. Then the sound would go to these speakers in non-HDMI?

Sir, you've gone beyond my limited knowledge. I've got a computer in one room and an audio system in another, both of which I understand. As for television, I've got an ancient Zenith CRT with a couple of equally old KLH plug-in speakers for those few occasions when I watch TV.

Can anyone else help Banshe?
