Do Awakening/other DLC characters count toward this limit?

I can only speak of the retail version of Awakenings, but it does separate your Origins characters from the Awakening ones.

This is probably why the OP has full character slots even though he only has 7 created characters. If three of them go through Awakening, that's your 10 full slots, no more characters can be created unless others are deleted first.

The only possible thing I can imagine you meaning that would fit with my experience would be that importing a character from Awakening to a DLC afterwards does not take up a spot (which I think I have not done) but that still doesn't explain why I had to delete a character to import from Origins to WH unless somehow that still counts as an Origins spot and not an Awakening spot. It also does not explain why I had to delete Origins save files in order to import someone into Awakening.

Do the characters from Leliana's Song and Darkspawn Chronicles not count toward your limit? Would make sense...

The DLCs also count towards your limit, but like the above posters have said, you can delete your old saves from an earlier campaign after you've imported to free up a slot, and if you're playing Leliana's Song or Darkspawn Chronicles, you can delete them after clearing them 100%.
Just remember, if you use multiple accounts to get past the character limit, be prepared for a crazy long load time on startup every time you switch to another account of characters.

you can actually get past the limit by creating another user account on your PS3. You can get a total of 10 character files per user account (you can make up to 16 user accounts on your system).

Didn't we discuss this elsewhere? [shameless plug Cecil!]

so if for example i finish witch hunt with my char from the main story could i delete my main char from the main story without risk of losing him because hes in witch hunt now. Would he still be able to be imported back into DAO?
correct, once you've imported your character they are "moved" into the other campaign. But no, you cannot import backwards, so if you want to keep playing Origins with that character you will need to keep the Origins saves.
It's also impossible to import saves from Witch Hunt into Golems Of Amgarrak (or WH/GOA saves into Awakening), from what I've gathered.

10, but yes, each Awakening/Leliana's Song/Golems of Amgorrak/Witch Hunt character counts toward this. So if you put one character through DAO, DAOA, GoA, and WH, you have taken up four slots. However, you can delete the characters as you go since all the info is (hopefully) transferred with them so that you finally end up with one WH save that has all your info for one character.
I actually came on here today to post a thread about this very topic.
Can anyone confirm if this is true? I want to delete the old versions of my characters and just keep the Witch Hunt files, but I need to know if it's safe to do that.
Edit: oh, I see EvilCecil4th has basically confirmed this. Okay -- another question then:
When I finished Witch Hunt it didn't create a separate save file for my character (like the 'Madridsplit' file at the end of Origins), but it did say 'checking save data' -- does that mean it just put all the info into the existing witch hunt file, or should I do the whole thing again?
