Attempting to force your players to socialize through facebook is a horrible idea. I can deal with some facebook minigame but if your games are going to start requiring it as a side effect of this recent collaboration you can count me out. I have no interest in facebook or the drama which comes with it.Chris Priestly wrote...
One of the main points to having Legends on Facebook (as opposed to being a simple flash game like Journeys) is to encourage Social interaction between players. which Facebook does exceptionally well. More details will be made available as we get closer to public launch next year.
Not that I blame you guys for it. It's obvious enough that EA is responsible.

Nobody's forcing anybody. Now exploiting [...players desire for easy loot as a means of self-promotion] seems to be a more accurate verb in this case.

If you want to play Dragon Age Legends you have to do it through facebook. So yes, you are effectively forced to use facebook. While I'm not terribly upset over some frivolous minigame I would really hate to see Dragon Age III require it. All in all it's a troubling development.Ex_Everest wrote...

Oh so it is one of those things you have to invite friends to. If that's the case, not interested.
Oh... Is it one of those kinds of games? Where you have to have so many friends before you can move to level A, or use ability B? I hate those types of games...
Ugh, nevermind. I don't need the free unlockable content that much.

Who said anything about DAII requiring it? And nobody's forcing anybody to socialize through facebook either, only an account needs to be created. Lest it's one of those games that require you to spam your friends. I think BW and EA have the good sense not to sink to such depths. Chris' statement above was a little vague on how social the game will expect you to be, so I wouldn't subscribe to any notions just yet.

Ex, you seem to be confusing things.
Making any ancillary product, such as a game like DA Legends or Journeys, helps spread the knowledge of the game and, we hope, will eventually help us sell more games. I don't shy away from this fact at all. It is a basic core of business that the more word of mouth you spread (hopefully positive word of mouth) you hopefully attract more customers.
However, having Dragon Age Legends on Facebook is not a "money" thing. It IS a social thing. If anything, from the negative posts you can see in this discussion, we may lose players who would have played a stand alone flash game instead of a Facebook game. We went with Facebook as it is the best Social gaming system for the type of game DA Legends will be.
But I am getting ahead of things. We will have more information on Dragon Age Legends before it is open to the public.

So it is going to use the social aspects of facebook. Well that sucks because i don't want to see my friends get spam because I want to play a game. Is it also safe to assume that it i will require us to do things with our "friends" to get the DLC. I guess my big problem with that is that I don't have any friends who play facebook games much less games like Dragon Age, and I am not going to add friends just to be able to play the game because my facebook is made up only with actual friends. Well I know it is to early to get upset about it so i guess I will just have to wait to see how it is implemented.

Well done Ex, you have really pinned me to the wall by revealing that our business wants to sell games and make money. Quick! Alert the media!
making money and selling games is not what im worried about.. What i am worried about is internet privacy, and Face books top 10 games are HUGE privacy offenders..
What kinda reasurance do we have that this one isnt just another giant gapping hole into our personal lives?]
as it is face book leaves a lot to be desired in the privacy issue. I do have a FB account, Mainly for contact info like Im not scared that someone is gonna find out my name and home adress, thats in the phone book. But im not naive enough to know that dont put anything on face book that you wouldnt want broadcasted on the evening news, My FB page is nothing more than a message site that i use so i dont have to list other more private info for people to contact me.
What assuarances do we have that our privacy is not going to be comprimised like the other top 10 FB games?

Well, if we are required to socialize with other people in order to get items to play a single player game, I'll just wait until the items are pirated and get them that way. This just smacks of the possibility of DA3 becoming a MMO and that saddens me beyond the telling of it.
I'm curious to hear more about how a mini-game is somehow indicative of DA3 becoming an MMO. Please share!

Sure, since you asked so nicely.
Did you ever play Leliana's Song? That DLC featured a 'voiced protagonist' (i.e. you could select Leliana's line and then she would speak something smiilar). Not long afterwards, DA2 was announced with the feature of...a voiced protagonist. (this is irrelevant to the matter at hand but I am in favor of this feature. Moving on...)
Now we have Bioware introducing a DA2 game on a social site because they want to "encourage Social interaction between players". Now one has to wonder why exactly they would care to make the effort to try to make their players more sociable a). in a single-player game, when they

I created a cursed Facebook account just for promotionals like these. Even if my soul whithered a little bit inside when I created the account. Do I blame BioWare for destroying my soul? Ah, it's worth it.
AH ah, you'll have to live with those dark side points and the consequence of your actions for the rest of your life game.
It's cool, i did the same thing, i even played Mafia Wars for a while... :-D

on facebook.
Here are 2 suggestions (mind you that most have been already
stated):
Create a fake facebook account with minimal info; that would solve the privacy issue and would only take a few minutes. You can also start a thread in BW social network stating your fake facebook name in order to add some friends (if need to complete levels)
If you’re even too paranoid for that or if you're religiously against facebook, then it would be best to avoid DA Legend all together. Heck starts your own petition against facebook if it makes u feel better.
All in all, the decision has already been made by BW for whatever motif. So quit crying about it and making it seem worst then it is.I for one will not be playing DA legends due to my belief on facebook.

I do have a Facebook account, but since my principles don't override my 'loyalty', I won't be enjoying BW's latest Legends game. Put it on Bioware.com and I'll play it in a heartbeat.

Look at Mr. priestly's latest posting here: The hate for FB gets noted. Maybe it won't change a thing, maybe it will, at least for the future. The whole PR fiasco around the Staff of Parthalan (at first nearly zero PR at all and a joke deadline, then a little more PR and another joke deadline, then the deadline till November but with still several people getting no newsletter at all), showed that BioWare can change, as seen with the Belt of Hindsight promo. And don't forget the Bazaar fiasco which made the BioWare headhonchos reply to the community that they will compensate all those non-participants (a promise yet to be delivered upon).
There have been other letdowns by BioWare recently (Awakening released in beat state, several pieces of bugged DLC, you name it), far too many compared to the long history of the company and the still (at least I think so) good reputation. So maybe many people around here are naive to voice their disappointment, maybe if this combined voice is strong enough they won't repeat stupid stunts like this very recent one.
