I'm traditionally a fan of RPGs and 4x strategy games, and have never really gotten into first-person shooters ( 10+ years later I'm still trying to finish Half Life).  However, earlier this year I got into Team Fortress 2, and I love it.  I'm not exactly sure why - I think partially it's the multi-class system forcing you to think about how to go after the other team and not just working on twitch instincts.  I also generally like playing the classes that require more thought & tactics (I usually end up as a spy).  And the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously - I've found that because of that, the fan base is a lot more fun to interact with.

With that in mind, are there any other games that I might want to try out that might be similar?  Tactics are the most important to me, with a close second being other players who don't spend their time saying "pWned - you SUCK LOZER!!!!!"

MW2 is addictive, but terrible. Full of hackers, cheaters, immature fools, and high ping. I can't wait for Black Ops though.

Interesting, I didn't realize it was multiplayer.  Is it really multiclass/tactical, or do you just think it's a good game?   I'm just trying to find ones that fit my particular criteria (no offense to anyone else's, which may be different from mine).

It has a great story in its single player. the multiplayer is so interesting and repetitive if you are interested in star wars. Graphic is still good and enjoyable (2002). wielding a lightsaber, using force powers or the crappy weapons which are hard to use against 1 to 19 opponents! actually tou can put AI as those other 19 players

It's Adriano, pay no heed.

I don't really play a lot of multiplayer FPS games as, truth be told, they don't interest me and I end up more stressed than entertained. I could mention anything from the Valve stable and that'll keep you ticking, but there's a number of other ones that might be worth looking into.

I found Star Wars: Battlefront II to seem to have online potential, especially with XL battles, but I've not tried to see if there's any games online that can be played. It might also be worth looking into any of the Unreal Tournament games as they, especially the original, are in a class of their own - Not to mention it will run like a dream even on fairly basic systems.

Not really my style.  In fact, that looks like basically the opposite of what I put in the first post.  Like I said, I'm looking for something tactical and preferably class-based (or some other system that lets you create various strengths & weaknesses out of the different players in the game).

Back in the day I use to play a Half-Life mod by the name of Natural Selection until it drove me mad. It combined RTS and FPS elements and was gratuitously intense if you played around people who knew what they were doing.

Nothing right now. I was playing MW2 but got tired of making people nerd rage with M203 rounds and RPGs. :) My all time favorite? RTCW: Enemy Territory...the best team based multiplayer I have witnessed.

OMFG I used to be obsessed with Natural Selection... I hear their working on Natural Selection 2.... if its even half as awesome as the first one than my obsession will easily return.

I posted it because it's an extremely tactical game and I like it. Not class based though, true.

I never played Natural Selection, but from my understanding it was basically a cross of C&C Renegade and Savage: Battle for Newerth.

The whole having a commander idea is a great concept, but it gets fuzzy. At a certain point, why bother being the one to build a base? If you don't build everything EXACTLY the way people want, then you get kicked...experimentation is actively discouraged.

L4D2 and Halo: Reach are the only ones I've been playing...Halo I only play if my friends are online to play with.

Natural Selection was a bit before Savage, and unlike Renegade it didn't really ahve any vehicular combat.

But yeah, experimentation is discouraged... but usually not on the Marine side which has the Commander, as those people who usually do that would do what they do differently. On the Alien side where there is not a commander in version 3.0 the Hardcore players became very unwilling in experimentation and you had to do things by the books. By then my interest had waned and everytime I tried to get back into it the player map was not as likable as back when I played. Still good fun to drop a defense chamber right away on the Alien side just to hear your teamates throw a fit.

Seems like 75% of the games I buy these days are FPSssses, but it's not even my favorite category of game. Tends to lead to strong multiplayer aspects though, so that's probably why.

Battlefield BC2 is pretty solid. It has that sort of class structure you seem to be looking for. Looking forward to Black Ops because of zombies and the fact that you can fight against bots.

Favorite FPS game of all time would have to be Counter-Strike. Not Source. Source was garbage. Original Counter-Strike beta 5 and 6 was the best! And Team Fortress classic. Ah, low grav rats. How I miss thee.

Call of Duty 2. Can't beat the classics.
