I managed to get all the way to the Collector Ship with my Infiltrator on Insanity. I struggled through Garrus' AI being terrible and getting him killed on Omega. I barely managed to beat the Praetorian on Horizon with a combination of cloaking and the Collector Beam. I even beat most of Korlus alone since my allies were so incompetent and kept getting themselves killed.

However, once I got to the first fight on the Collector Ship, it all went to hell since cover became useless against Harbinger. I'd bunker down and it'd quickly become useless as he'd hit me and push me out of cover, leaving me open to being torn to shreds by the Collectors. Who on Bioware's staff thought it was a good idea to put you up against an enemy that can knock you out of cover at will?

It was at that point that I gave up on Insanity for the time being. I managed to beat ME1 on Insanity but this is just ridiculous. It's what TV Tropes describes as The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard.

In order to beat the Praetorian in Collector ship, you have to keep moving around behind covers. The easiest way to eliminate all the minors at first, then order your squad to stand behind those cover at lower level. Then you just keep running up then down, keep doing so and you will win eventually.

Playing @ Insanity is not hard, all you need is to plan how to attack and make it more efficient. :)

No, my problem isn't the Collector Ship Praetorian (yet) since on Insanity, I have yet to get to that part. I can't get past the first fight on the ship since every single time, Harbinger knocks me out of cover and the other Collectors shoot me too quickly for me to recover and get back in cover.

Don't stay in the same place behind cover. Move to the left and right and you dodge harbinger's cover busting moves.

@OP

In case you do not notice - Harbinger has 2 attacks. 1 is pure yellow fireball, the other is a slow moving fireball with a dark aura around it. When you see the dark aura fireball - do as sinosleep said.

Tis the dark aura fireball that knocks you out of cover.

Some basic stuff that helped me:

- insanity is all about stripping defenses and positioning the squad.  I always bring Thane / Miranda for Warp, and use the waypoints to plant them behind cover, so they're less likely to walk around and get shot.

- focus on the other collectors first, so you don't have to kill Harby over and over again.

- use cloak defensively to get Harby to look away from you.

Sorry I don't have much more than that - I don't remember this part giving me problems as an Infiltrator.   (As a Vanguard however, the platforms give me fits.........)

Cloaking for defense is one of your best bets as an infiltrator. Once you get targetted, cloak and move, shoot before you uncloak, get to cover. Rinse and repeat. If you use the Widow, thats a giant boon in this case. The key is to keep moving, and cloak when youre in trouble. The platforms have plenty of cover, so cloak, get to cover, and shoot before it wears off. By the time you get targetted again, cloak is refreshed. Thats how I did it on my infiltrator. Took 2 or 3 tries, but once you get into a groove its a cake-walk, especially with the Widow. I used Miranda for warp, and Grunt as a distraction/tank and for Squad Incendiary Ammo. That sped things up quite abit.

This is the hardest part of this game. I always have trouble with that. AverageGatsby has an engineer video of how he gets thru that with the Avalanche.

3:09 is where the fight starts.

Basically he opens with the avalanche and freezes those first three collectors ( takes about 5-6 shots ). When Harbinger takes control of the drone HE is frozen ( you can kill him and he won't do anything ). It makes the opening much easier. I use this method with every class. It means that you will need to fight the Praetorian without a good heavy weapon ( because I have no luck with avalanche on that fight ).

The Avalanche will make quick work of the platforms, as suggested, if you go with it.

For your squad, I'd suggest a Warpbombing pair.  Your best bet, if you Infiltrator doesn't already have Warp Ammo, is Thane (for Unstable Warp and Throw) and Jack (for Squad Warp Ammo and Pull).  Often times when the first platform lands, you can instantly strip the defenses of the first Collector (just pause as it's landing and hit the focus both squadmates fire on target enemy button).  The next instant after it's barrier is removed, pause again, hit that focus fire button on a different enemy (to prevent them from killing the first), then Pull-Warp that first target.  More often than not, the blast from the Unstable Warpbomb knocks the other standard Collector Drone right off the platform.  This method can be repeated for each Collector filled platform that lands; a great way to start each fight.

The Scions' Shockwaves are what will kill your squadmates more than anything else here.  It's kind of hard to avoid that.  It will also instantly strip your shields too, while leaving you staggered out of cover to get shot dead.  You need to know at all time where that Scion is so you can not only position for the best cover against the Collectors but also to avoid the Shockwave's line of fire.  Pause a lot if you need to, until you get the hang of these platforms.

When the battle first starts, place both of them behind the middle cover of your starting platform, while you yourself will be moving around to dodge attacks and set up shots.  However once that second platform lands, I'd hit the regroup button or the Collectors will have the perfect angle to shoot them if they're still there.  After clearing that second platform of Collectors, charge the second Scion platform that lands and take it out as quickly as you can manage.  Then use the heavy weapon ammo crate there to refill all your guns' ammo before the last Collector platform docks.

And lastly, don't forget your Medi-gel for when you are near death (hopefully you upgraded it fully)!

Some important points concerning insanty in general.

Dnt get close unless you can handle melee combat and have ways t rechage ur shields.

-You should be ositioning and controlling your squad as much as possible. With the right weapons and the right people for each mission your teammaes are a huge help.

-Dont get close to Harbinger, its a bad idea.

Keep your head up The higher diffculties all get easier after the collector ship. Thats when your upgrades really start coming in. like Hard Shields which makes a huge dfference in survivability. Make use of cloak constantly and dont be to stingy with medigel it can save your butt!

Killing that first wave fast helps a lot. Then you should concentrate on the mobile scion. For me, that's the worst part. Wave 2 and 3 of collectors land to your left, and one of the scion's position is to your right. That's really bad.

If you have the Widow, it shouldn't be a hard kill. Aim for its blue fleshy thing, that counts as a headshot.

If you manage to kill that sucker before wave 2 and 3, things get easier.

I would like to ask about which weapon you went with?

The Widow can destroy Harby with one / two shots. With other weapons your tactics to defeat Harby would depend on your class skills and which bonus power you have.

Also that black biotic attack resembles a singularity; so as Sinosleep said, when ducked behind cover, strafe left and right along cover or use cloak to reposition.

Another tip, when firing from behind cover you could try to pop out from the edges of the barrier so you don't pop straight up out of cover. That way Harby and friends don't have as wide an arc to fire on you with their ultra accuracy.

I also agree with this.   I've taken care of the collectors many times on that first platform only to get killed from behind by that scion.  Image IPB   That is also why I always "advance training" to get statis if I don't have it already, for this mission.  One point will let you pull off the Kronner move where you statis the Scion right after you freeze the collectors on that first platform.  When the platform moves, presto, No scion ( falls to death ) { The video is posted in the Statis thread a few months back }.  But I figured that everybody has builds that depend on a specific bonus power.

Yea, verily. I call it the "beehive" attack.

The other posters are right. Don't stay behind the same cover — or even in the same spot behind cover.

The beehive moves very slowly. You can dodge it. For instance, if the cover you're crouching behind has any length to it at all, you can stay at one end of the wall until a beehive starts coming at you. When it gets close, simply stay crouched behind the wall and go to the other end. The beehive will sail right over the spot where you were. It has some ability to track you, but not much.

Even on Insanity, it won't take much practice to master that trick.

As for squadmates who won't use cover well, I place then in cover myself -- so deep they can't even shoot at your enemies. It's your line of sight that matters when you command them to use a power, not theirs. Simply leave them in a very safe place out of sight and use their powers, particularly Warp, and do the shooting with your Shepard.

Quite a bit different then the way I described in my last post, but still very effective; a quick youtube search yielded this video of a Widow Infiltrator making quick work of those platforms:

You could easily combine the two styles for even more options, just bring the right squad :)

Helps a great deal if you have dominate. You can just ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL on a random collector near Harbinger, and Harbinger will almost always stop shooting you and attack the Collector. Then just quickly pop a head shot with your widow. Just keep renewing dominate (it stops once the barrier's down) until Harbinger dies.

Good luck with the Praetorian.

Like sinosleep said, you can dodge harby's attacks by shuffling side-to-side while behind cover.

Also if you have Kasumi, you can make her spam Flashbang on harby, which will pretty much take him out of the fight. Tali can do something similar with combat drone. Either way, remember to go for the grunts first, so harby can't reincarnate.

That's always a tough spot for me too, and I died a zillion times on Insanity. In the end, what worked for me was spreading my squadmates out as wide as possible. This way, they drew enough enemy fire for me to be able to take Harbinger down before he got too close. And obviously, anywhere you're going up against collectors, you want to have squaddies with you that have Warp.

My thoughts have been covered. Mainly, bringing Miranda and Thane for warp helps a lot. Also, taking out the little guys first is necessary. I had a lot of difficulty on this mission my first time through insanity as well, and it can be a deal breaker.

A couple of follow up questions: Do you have your squad mates set to use their powers? If so, try turning it off and manually using their powers with the focus fire function. If you use the squad positioning button while the cross hairs are over an enemy, the corresponding squad mate will use the best power they have available against the active defense of that enemy. You may already know this, but it is something that I only realized about a month ago. You may forget to use their powers when they are up, but it can be better than needing one of their abilities only to find out that they're on cool down.

Also, for the start of the fight, try positioning your squad mates directly behind the first cover area facing the incoming platform with enemies on it. they will be less likely to die quickly if you position them yourself. Once the first platform is clear, I usually tell them to follow me, because I'm too busy trying to kill the scion to manually re-position them (and they mostly tend to die right at the start of the fight.)

My final prescriptions for winning that particular battle are the patience of a saint and a good stress relieving squeeze ball, to keep from bursting a blood vessel in your forehead.

Edit: One other thought is that if you get bounced out of cover by Harbinger or a Scion, spamming cloak so that it comes up as soon as you're not staggered can be a life saver, even if it blows a cool down you were intending to use on something else.

I'll make a vid as soon as I get done cooking :). My dumb ass got stuck with leading a bbq in the rain. Luckily my roof has enough of an overhang to keep the coals from getting wet, unfortunately it's not enough to stop me from getting soaked.

Are you using Squad Cryo Ammo? It will freeze normal Collectors so they're not shooting at you allowing you to concentrate on Harbinger. And sometimes Harbinger will take over a frozen Collector so you can melee him off the edge.

When I was having trouble with my first Insanity game, I tried to follow the Avalanche advice (recommended long, long ago in a different thread) but it just didn't work for me.  The Arc Projector was a better fit for me.  It helps clear the first platform fast enough to avoid a Harbinger spawn there.

Like sinosleep said, you can fake out Harbinger's special attack by repeating moving back and forth under cover. Also it has a limited AOE: if you're positioned diagonally to Harbinger with a corner in-between you and him, the special attack will not affect you.
