well, it of course depends on which weapon you use, but take an uzi for example. its impossible to fire 1 shot at a time when its in fully automatic...All-a-Mort wrote...
I thought most militaries specifically instructed soldiers not to fire in bursts, but rather fire quick consecutive shots to maintain accuracy and not waste ammunition (unless using an LMG or MG).Cailean wrote...
Do like they do in the militairy: SHORT bursts of 3-5 bullets. Don't spray around like the people do in Call of Duty... and try to use them on medium range, they simply suck when enemies are close...

The biggest change in my playstyle was learning to hit the button to activate Adrenaline Rush after I'd already zoomed in on my target, which has helped tremendously. This requires both of my hands to be working the controller in a manner that is unfamiliar to me, so it's slow going. Also, I thought I had covered my bad habit of aiming without reloading after many mistakes with the Widow, but turns out I have to work on that with the Mattock as well. Nothing sucks more than for me to be in the middle of an Adrenaline Rush before realizing I have forgotten to reload.
So with the Mattock, I feel I am crazy powerful. I'm trying very hard not to switch out to a sniper rifle because once I start down that path, it will be sniper rifle all the time with me. So I'm taking the opportunity to learn how to use the laser sight on the M-5 pistol whenever I run out of bullets with the Mattock. I tried the M-5 with my Infiltrator when I first downloaded it, but I was too slow with the aiming. Easier with Adrenaline Rush.
But I think the big key, other than learning to pulse shots, is the use of Adrenaline Rush after zooming. It makes a huge difference in staying on target.

I have a confession to make. Actually, I've made it several times: I suck at shooter games.
When I first played ME1, I stuck exclusively to the pistol. Why? Because I had no idea how to use an assault rifle or a shotgun. And people already know what a pain a sniper rifle is early on. The assault rifle kept going off target. The shotgun never seemed to do much damage. The pistol worked well for me. And eventually the pistol, with expert marksman and some spectre gear, becomes an unstoppable beast. I never had any reason to learn another weapon.
Well, I did eventually take on the sniper rifle. I like 'em.
Now, ME1 was essentially my first shooter game. A friend did tell me that shotguns were meant for close quarters. He mentioned that I couldn't just hold the trigger down for the assault rifle, I had to tap it and also compensate for drift. But again, the pistol did exactly what I wanted, so why learn how to use something else?
Unfortunately, I found a cruel beast in ME2 when I discovered that pistols could not actually keep firing forever. I had to learn to aim. As consolation, perhaps, I could use the sniper rifle from the beginning. With time dilation, aiming wasn't a problem. Eventually, I learned how to handle the SMG. It became my surrogate for the pistol, that unstoppable beast again.
Thanks to the guides here teaching me some CQC tactics, I did even figure out how to make use of a shotgun.
But one thing I have not been able to figure out is the assault rifle. I started a soldier playthrough for the first time weeks and weeks ago, but that got put on hold around the time LotSB came out in favor of digging out some older playthroughs to run through the new DLC. Then I kinda lost interest in playing ME2. (Shock!Horror!)
Before I lost interest, I was intent on playing my soldier with the assault rifles, to finally learn how to properly use them. Except then I discovered that it was even easier to use a sniper rifle with adrenaline rush than it was with the time dilation. Suddenly, I had to snipe everything. And when I ran out of bullets, the shotgun came out.
I tried the Mattock, but it was a disaster. I couldn't hit anything. I couldn't figure out if I just wasn't tapping well enough. I couldn't figure out how to aim. Maybe it's the wrong assault rifle for me to learn.
So help me, strategy forum. How do I use an assault rifle? Explain as you would a child who has picked up Halo for the first time ever.
What an odd twist of fate, I happen to be, primarily an FPS gamer.
-My assault rifle tip for ME2
-Lead your targets, fire a little bit ahead of them if they are moving.
-Aim for the chest of the target by default.
-Holding the right-mouse-button will make you zoom in on your target, thus making your weapon more accurate.
-Always fire in bursts. (Know when to break this rule)
-The assault rifle is not a Sniper rifle. Engage enemies at medium range.
-Try not to run and gun. Your aim is reduced that much more when you are moving.
-Listen to the "beat" of combat. Listen for breaks in enemy fire and attack.
-Make the enemy play by your rules. Are you pinned down? Use Jack's shockwave to break up their constant fire.
-Cover and fire. Use the cover system to push forward to your enemies. The closer you are, the easier it is to aim.
-Steal enemy positions. When you kill an enemy behind cover, try to occupy that position so enemies cant use it.
-Use your squadmates to draw fire while you flank the enemy.
-Always attack in angles.
-When all else fails, hold the Spacebar and open the tactical menu. Move your mouse over your target, exit tactical menu and fire.
Hope that helps.
