no matter what i say when i talk to shale i always get a negative so giving him gifts is the only way to get him up and it is hard when he is negative. do not know what i did but he is my tank and i do not want to lose him. so i give him all gifts not needed by another player

The secret to Shale is that you need to always give her the choice. She's obsessed with her own free will and any time you ask her what she wants to do its a garenteed plus

That would require me to create another toon and do a play through as I didn't bother copying them down in my notes. I might do that in time, right now I have several on the go and I don't feel the need to start up a new one.

I'm finding that problem with Sten as well...he just isn't very friendly at all and my gifts aren't helping me get out of neutral with him. Shale at least occasionally likes what I have to say..but I haven't done Orzammar yet so don't have the gifts.

Yes, I found Sten the hardest to increase faction with. That being said however I think I've figured him out. He's a very literal person and doesn't like long bits of banter. Everything you say he will take as such, so sarcasm isn't advised. Where as with the other party members you benefit from carrying on a conversation it’s the other way around with Sten, say what you need to say and be done with it.

Here's an example.

Ask him why he came to Ferelden. He will say it was the Arashok that sent him to get an answer to a question. Here you have several dialog choices, as a rule of thumb the most straight forward line of questioning is the best. Ask him what the question was. He will respond with, "what is the blight". Again more dialog choices, but you’re going to choose the one asking if he found the answer. He will respond yes, than ask him if he plans to report back. He will respond no. Ask him why, he will say he cannot go back. Than simply state that he can stay with you. He will say thanks, end the conversation totally and enjoy the huge plus.

As you can see, during that conversation we didn't stray from the clearly defined conversation. Once that conversation is over, end it with him totally than strike up another conversation.

Regarding Sten: I managed to get him to about +15 with the paiting of the rebel queen and some chatting before I went to Derenim to do Alistair's quest. While we were there, he remarked about children. This lead to me being able to use the 'I wanted to ask you about what you said earlier' (paraphrased) option. That in turn kicked off a row of talks that each resulted in double figure bonuses. You just need I think you really need to wait for the trigger to get anything out of Sten, unless you can find all the gifts first.





Also: Morrigan immensely enjoys the golden necklaces you can buy in certain places (one place I remember for sure is the crooked merchant in Lothering). It's called a braided necklace or rope necklace or something and nets you the extra +5 if given to her.

Quick update, turns out the Ale is not a genaric gift dispite all that I've read. It does indeed go better with Oghren, my apologies for the confusion. Guide updated to reflect as such
