This is great thank you. I had worked out Oghren liked alcohol, Leilana liked andraste, dog liked bones and Morrigan liked jewellery but really didn't have any idea about Loghain and Sten.

It's all quite predictable when you think about it.

Indeed it is :)

Nice list. I've been browsing through the core_en-us.tlk file to modify ability tooltips for a mod and I bumped into these descriptions which give you an idea of what each of the party members like, identical to that list shown above. Loghain likes maps (tactical freak), Wynne likes books, Leliana likes religious stuff, Alistair is fascinated by magic and likes magic runestones and depictions of fantastic beasts, Morrigan is a total skank, is particular about her appearance and loves jewelry etc.

Not sure if those descriptions show up in the game somewhere. I think the strings are perhaps codex entries after you've talked with them a bit. They might have even disabled them from showing up in the game - worried it might give things away about the gift system too much.

Yeah I haven't come accross anything like that in the way of hints. What I have here is the result of trial and error :)

Wynne liked the yarn (+5) and Sten liked the gold/silver pantaloons for some reason.

As displayed by my chart, unless its +6 or above she doesn't "Like" the gift.

No.  If they are the same ones I saw, these descriptions showed up in their codex entries for me after I'd talked to them and given them at least one gift.

The chars codex entries are expanded as you explore their dialogue choices and subplots. Hints about what gifts the chars like will show up in the codex entries...usually after the character has hinted to this fact in dialogue of some sort.

You have to have certain reputation with the characters to get to those dialogue choices.

As stated in the guide the closer to neutral a character is, the more they respond to ANY gift. Rep increases are smaller the more you approach +100, ect...

Excellent guide, lets you know what to stash in your family chest up at Soldier's peak until you pick up that companion character that responds best to whatever item you've stashed.

Every Remarkable Gem that I've given Shale has earned me only a +1 and a, "You expect me to keep this?" comment.

:(

Shale hates me

I was neutral/friendly with him and got the same messages, I think Shale may be a bit bugged?

I think it has something to do with the Anvil of the Void. The rises were solid before I lied to her at camp about Caridin. After that I got a +1 on every gem.

No clue on that one, Shale gives me a minimum of +6 with every gem I give her. Course I should state the time that I didn't destroy the forge I never bothered to grab Shale.

What about the skyball? That weird gift
has vexed me since I first got it. Or does it not really boost anyone's
approval much?

I gotta say
that it seems to me that it should really be someone's prefered gift,
because it's so unusual. Maybe sten who likes art or Loghain who likes maps. Maybe Bioware forgot to program it properly?

Thanks, this is really helpful!

Regarding the maps...it says that Gorim sells the map of the Anderfels but I haven't seen it. Does he only sell it at a particular point in the game?
