I prefer the first one, but that doesn't make the second any more or less "right."

Actually, depends. The first one looks more "completed" as a standalone, the second feels naked and unfinished without the dialog boxes. So the second one, on its own, feels "less right", as it communicates less.

That's my take, anyhow.

On DA:O vs DA:2... I'll have to see the full gamut of equipment before deciding, but massive armors in DA:O were damn good, while spiky useless suncatching gut-exposing armor... is not as good.

Correct, your preference is not what makes the first one right.  Objective reality is what makes the first one right.  That you can recognize objective reality (like the sun is hot, steam is gaseous, the first batman is better than the second) when you see it is circumstantial.  It isn't an opinion that the first one is right, but a onjective fact.

Ogres with horns, meet the qunari - the very race the darkspawn create the ogre broodmothers from! It's known that darkspawn races usually resemble twisted versions of their mother race. Coupled with the Codex information (yes, that reference to horned men whether you like it or not), it's not that unreasonable to believe that there are qunari with horns.

There are no codex entries that mention "horned men".

If there were I would assume you would already have posted it.  That makes you a liar and the words of a liar carry little to no weight.

I love the new art direction. Have you seen the concept art? It's nice. Go to the blogs. It's there.

Why can't people just admit that the darkspawn or Origins just looked like an extremely generic and bland mix of orch, zombie, ghoul, and person with severe burns?

Seriously the new ones have a distinct classic style.

The Qunari thing is kinda lame though, it'd be understandable if they had horns, but do they have to look like demons?

The new darkspawn aren't very intimidating.  I would fear them as much as I would fear any human opponent: not at all.  If I could make Hawke look like He Man they would make for a nice nostalgia factor.

The screenshots and trailers hint that the Qunari might well be the one of the main antagonists in DA:2. Thus, they had to be dehumanized to reduce player qualms about hitting them.

Don't follow this line of logic, good writing alleviates this all the time.

There will always be a vocal minority that cheers for the bad guys no matter what they do, so changing your lore to eliminate a contingant that will always exist is stupid.

Otherwise you end up like the esurance people, who eliminated an effective ad campaign to spite creepy internet porn, where, there is creepy internet porn for everything.

Wait what? I missed something?

Anyways on art direction. Not overly fond of how people look at this point.

The old hurlock looked like orcs from lord of the rings. That is poor.

The new hurlock are inspired by inventiveness and creativity. They were humans, therefor, their physical traits are more wretched remnants of what they used to be, rather than being the generic orc or goblin.

I don't see it.  They still look like Orcs, just orcs with ****ty armor and perfect teeth.  Are they going to explain how Darkspawn armor regressed, given how they had an image they created for Hurlock Leaders to look like?  The golden armor with the Horned helmet, for instance.  They don't even account for differences in human skin tone, they all look the same.

Check your character/party accomplishments.  Up until probably the final battle (with all the darkspawn grunt fodder) you probably had alot more human kills than darkspawn.  Villainizing the Qunari aesthetically would be a sign of poor storytelling.  I think they just wanted to make them look different.  I don;t hate the look, I just hate the destruction of continuity.  As someone said, horns are one think... being demonkin is another.  And the qunari are definitely demonic in DA:O.  They are more monstrous looking than the new darkspawn. ^ This. No more Lord of the Rings aesthetic, please.

I like the look of the new darkspawn themselves, but the armor and headpiece has got to go, as does the monkey-like shambling around.

Edit: Actually, I should have said Peter Jackson aesthetic.

Tal Vashoth shave/cut off their horns, so they were not special qunari like Sten.

I'm not a fan of it but thats the explanation they've given us.

Sure, we've been given an explanation, but you can't deny that it's a retcon. The explanation has been formalated after the decision to redesign the Qunari, in order to explain the disparity.

Not really a retcon as it doesn't actually interfere with established continuity. If there had been anything implying that all or even most Qunari looked like Sten prior to the redesign, then it'd be a retcon, but since there wasn't, it's just a super sneaky expanding-the-lore trick.

"just orcs with perfect teeth(won't even aknowledge the "****ty armor" comment, that is completely up for debate)" is understating it a bit, don't you think?

At the last part of ostigar, right before the "hurlocks" charged, they had their war cries and everything...i could not help but to think..."why do they have sharp teeth? and why is their skin green? why are their djole similar to that of a monkey's(or an orc from lord of the rings)? why are their eyes all of a sudden so beedy?

the new hurlock are better. there is no arguing it.
