So I checked the toolset out of curiousity and it doesn't appear there are any conditions attached to Leliana talking about nugs, other than being in Orzammar. If you talk to Leliana while in Orzammar, she should start talking about the halls of the dwarven kings, and then mention the nugs. The dialogue is set to trigger only once per game, and sets a plot flag which opens up the dialogue with the nug catcher. There's no reason I can see why some playthroughs wouldn't get that dialogue, except for a game bug where the dialogue incorrectly gets set as having triggered when it hasn't.

Yup. I actually had to look that up in the guide because I forgot about him mentioning hunting nugs and just treated him as a silly, unimportant dwarf.

Also she has to be at least warm to you. You can't just randomly give her a nug if she hasn't any sort of feeling towards you.

You have to be in a relationship with her and talk to her while in Orzammar.



I had her at +100 and tried it, but it only worked after I triggered the romance after her personal quest (missed the opportunity before that).

The times that I have succeeded in getting her nug, is when she hasn't been friend-zoned yet. The quest was initiated just by talking to her in the Ozrammar zone, and she talks about how cute nugs are.



The times that I have failed was when she was friend-zoned, and after initiating conversation with the nug-wrangler, she comments that she doesn't like nugs and finds them icky and whatnot.



So, maybe she has to be potentially romancable, or maybe you have to talk to her about it before going to the nug-wrangler?



I've never had the Schmooples conversation - do you have to be grouped with her and dog to get this?

In my first playthrough I was female and not romancing Leliana. I wasn't able to get the nug dialogue until she was +90 and I had completed her personal quest. I tried talking to her several times before that and she never brought it up. You do NOT have to be in a relationship with her to get this to work, just looks like you need to have serious approval rating.

It's possible that this could have something to do with her being "hardened" or not, as I never got dialogue about her finding them icky.  I did not harden Leli in that playthrough, she just never mentioned the nugs at all until I went back near the very end of the game to turn in the sick noble cure, suddenly she starts up conversation and wants one.
