You can always spare Loghain, and feed him to the arch demon I suppose. But yeh, HNs who want the throne should not harden Alistair and thereby give themselves competition.

??? What are you talking about?
I'm assuming you're playing a Human Noble male. So when it comes to Loghain, if you kill him, Anora won't marry your warden. If Alistair kills Loghain, if he's hardened, he automatically takes the throne. If Alistair ISN'T hardened, he does not automatically take the throne.
So to marry Anora at this point, you have to spare Loghain, at least at the landsmeet, and either have Alistair executed or exiled. You can always not do the dark ritual and have Loghain take the killing blow.

Agree with Anora to take the throne together.
Let Anora kill Alistair
Refuse Morrigan's ritual.
Let Loghnain ride the Dragon.

If you arrange for Alistair and Anora to marry pre-Landsmeet then Alistair doesn't automatically take the throne then (although the marriage is now impossible) and you get to choose. I've heard something about Alistair also turning it down under some conditions of his romance being active but I'm hardly an expert on that.Ferretinabun wrote...
Hang on, Alistair automatically takes the throne if he is hardened and executes Loghain? Since when? Surely even in that case you still get to pick between Anora and Alistair...?

If the player fails to talk to Anora in her room after the rescue, and mention his intentions there, then I believe you don't get to marry her. So in that case, if Alistair kills Loghain, hardened, even with a HNM maybe he does make himself king with no choice given.
Edited to add: the only Origin that gets the choice in that situation is a noble. I learned the hard way with a mage once that he will definitely claim the throne after he kills Loghain, without you having a choice.

Oh well, you can still kill Poghain and turn Alistair into a bitter (not to mention tainted) drunk. That should give him some time to reflect on his temper tantrums...

Here are the two circumstances where Alistair doesn't automatically take the throne IF he does the killing blow AND is hardened:
There is the marriage between him and Anora set up beforehand.
He is in love with a Human Noble Female.
Neither of these would apply to the OP. He has the marriage set up between him and Anora, not Alistair and Anora, and is not a HNF, in a romance or not.

If Loghain dies at the Landsmeet, Alistair either becomes king or stays a Warden. If you want drunk!Alistair ending, Loghain has to become a Warden. He could still die slaying the Archdemon, though.Ferretinabun wrote...

Though him being sent to live the rest of his life in Orlais is probably the very definition of Karmic hell.

In all I think Alistair would still rather be dragon kibble than either marry Anora or wade through Morrigan's swamp. Metal, you can't have your cake and eat it to. You don't get to kill both at the Landsmeet. If you spare Loghain you can kill Alistair and you have to take the mule kicked zombie with you for the remainder of the game. If you kill Loghain you have to have Alistair to the end of the game. thats how it works. One of them (if you are a female warden) has to be available to do the dirty for Morrigan's OGB. If you hardened Alistair then you won't get to take the throne without sparing your future father in law.
You can't kill Loghain (Anora won't marry her father's killer) and Alistair will always take the throne after killing Loghain unless you are in a romance with him as a HNF.

This does not work if Alistair is hardened.
