alistair:  OMG IF YOU DO I am not going to play grey warden with you ANY MORE! I will abandon the entire world to die cause I have HONOR.
Me:hey that ghoul was my best friend since I was a baby I'm sad we killed him
Alistair oh really he's better off dead
me: hey we just sacrificied a whiny orlesian who ruined your childhood to save a little boy who tried to save his father
Alistair OMG I HaVE UNRESOLVED CHILDHOOD ISSUES ,THAT MAY displease eamon and btw blood magic makes you a bad person no matter what
how does anyone not want to run a sword through him?

This is one of trhe best posts ever! many of my characters wish there was an option to run a sword thru him, others want to smack him in the back of the head several times throughout the game.

Then there are my other characters that just go gaga over how adorably sweeet his romance is and the Dahlia lynn mods that make it so epic.  But you really pegged many of the things that are wrong with him.  I wouldn't change him... too much, but yeah.

Ok, my two cents...

I totally see where OP is coming from, mind you... I spend my playthroughs constantly torn between wanting to hug the adorable ideot and wanting to strangle him.  There is so much to love and to hate.  I think it's natural that some people will be rubbed the wrong way by a character in a playthrough and just not like that character.  I hate Lelliana.  OIverall she's a well written character, and I would not wish her taken out of the game, but sometimes it's just as fun to **** about what pissed us off about a character we hate as what endeared us to a character we love.

I think people just cross the line if they say the character shouldn't be in the game, or that there shouldn't be characters like that in the future.  No reson to deprive another player of a favorite character just because I don't like him or her.  I think the intense reactions the characters in DA:O get out of players says a lot about the quality of the writing and diversity of personalities and circumstances represented in the game.  Doesn't mean it's not fair for someone to rant about how much they dislike another's fave character.  Better to debate WHY the character behaves the way he or she does than be personaly offended, IMO.

If the only characters I hated in this game were the villains designed to be hated, then I would find this game less realistic and the dialogue booring.  Variety is the spice of life and all that.

Yeah I definitely have a love/hate relationship with Alistair. He definitely has a lot of appealing traits, and some extremely irritating ones. It's a tough job liking both Alistair and Loghain...

Tell me about it. I really get bummed out come Landsmeet, having to pick one over the other, and feel like  a certain level of wrong no matter which way I decide to go. Sigh.

You can always RP a character that either doesn't like Alistair or respects his disinclination to take the throne, you know.

This is very well said.

Personally, I can't stand the Alistair character.  I probably couldn't take someone like him in real life.  I see him as self centered, I see him as whiny, I see him as lacking confidence, backbone, and a sense of self-worth.  I also don't see him as particularly useful as a warrior.  And ganeplay wise, his personal quest is useless - no xp, no loot, etc.

I tolerated him in my first game as a regular companion because I'd gotten used to him in my party.  SUbsequent playthroughs, he stays in camp, I barely speak to him, and as you can all guess, this man never sits his arse on the throne of Ferelden.

That's not to say Bioware shouldn't have written the character.  They had that option, and took it.  Just that I have the right to hate him, and not use him.  And yes, if there was an option to kick him out of the party, or flat out kill him, I'd take it often.   Posted Image

Umm, no.
IMO, he is one dimensional, and hardly likeable.  I'd rate Morrigan as the most real seeming character in the game.

Hmmm, I have to disagree here.  I think most of the companions are very real-seeming.  They have their good points and their faults.  There is quite a bit I don't like about Alistair -- mainly stemming from his placing the entire burden of leadership on the warden's shoulders and being oblivious to the pain the warden is (or may be) going through.

I can't think of a more alone feeling in the world than just losing everyone and everything you know, having to leave the few remaining family members you have left in danger and not being able to help them (gah, CE... DC...), and then having such a heavy burden placed on your shoulders.

I also don't like Alistair courting the warden giving the future no real thought.  That romance, in the beginning, is very much in the moment, and in many ways feels, to me, like his reaching out to someone in his mourning.  In most cases (and there is no need to picspam the "where are we going" conversation if it happens after the landsmeet -- this conversation almost never happens then, and never without metagaming unless you start the romance REALLY late).  My first playthrough, the "where are we going" conversation, combined with his "in love" greeting, was like a glass of icewater to the face.  It made my city elf feel cheap.  It didn't stop me from clinging and hoping things would change back, but there you go.

I don't think Alistair is a bad character.  I think he's very sweet, gentle, and wants to do the right thing.  But he lets his heart rule too much, and because of this, at times shows poor judgement.

Edit: I think we see the character we like to romance as the most real seeming one in game, however.  And we tend to make the most excuses for their flaws.

Second edit: Even Zevran, before you ever get the option to go to the tent, asks about the future, and if the romance is active, asks if it will continue beyond the blight.

Ah, and something else I meant to say in my original post (I couldn't edit in time because of you fast posters!).

It's not as if the characters should pour out their feelings then immediately ask: "So what about you!?" It would lessen their own hurt/story and seem maybe fake. However, several nights/conversations later, maybe they could approach you and mention that they know nothing about you--and inquire....

I think the designers had limited time to incorporate things like this. They just leave it at the assumption that everyone in your party knows about your past and such (camp fire stories that are never shown on screen).

If they had more time/money/whatever, they could even make it possible for other companions to develop relationships with one another (with you having a little control on how they develop), and the game could be a lot different. All of this is ambitious and no one has done this yet. I can't fault Bioware for not having done it.

Bioware has done it in the Baldur's Gate series. There was even a romance between 2 party members.

yeah I can leave him i camp and then he verbally attacked me and called me a bad grey warden as h refused to take control of the group Why are we supposed to have sympathy for him when he is so self absorbed he doesn't even realise the warden he is yelling at is doing his best to be a grey warden with no help after his family died.
wow that Gaider guy really seems to like Alistair even to the point of alienating that player. I say If Alistair is an emotional guy he would care what the other wardens have been through.
My casteless dwarf loved Duncan for saving him and was just as devastated so He tried to honor his memory by stopping the blight. And who says I refuse to make any decisions at all but I will criticize yours. plus the fact that he doesn't inform you you will be childless and die in thirty years until you ask him a bunch of questions then he get angry you're upset

Are you not getting a bit to emotional over a dare I say it an NPC who is not even real?
what happen did he dump you at the landsmeet or something?

You know, not every time anyone says anything negative about Alistair or any of the other LIs it's because they had a bad experience with the romance ending.

I would dare say, that many of the males who do not like him in fact did NOT have a bad ending with him at the landsmeet.

AliFriend plays a lot differently than AilLover.

Edit: And I find it no stranger someone hating him than someone posting in a thread dedicated to hating him, looking for a reason why someone would hate him :)  It's a testament to the good writing that people get this emotionally involved, for good or evil.

I have to admit, I have strong emotional reactions to the characters; a reaction I've never had outside of books before.

Maybe, but I have seen a lot of players change their minds about liking him after being dumped following the Landsmeet. It may not be Metal's experience but if that was why he/she hates the character it wouldn't be the first player to start the hate over that.

I've heard people say "he dumped me so I fed him to the Archdemon" also. Love em or hate em, these NPCs are well written and stir a lot of emotion, esp when you get immersed in the game. My own well documented hate of one NPC has its birthing in the way they wrote him.

Well, I've said that, but it was more like this.  When he sacrificed himself to the arch demon after dumping my city elf (first playthrough), it was a total, complete shock.  One of the most emotional moments EVER in a videogame.

Seriously, it was beautiful and tragic.  A fabulous ending.
