For starters Alistair never had a real father figure before Duncan, even though it was six months Duncan was the closest thing he had to an actual father
Eamon didn't care for him properly and sent him off to the Chantry because of his crazy wife and rumors. Not to mention Eamon had him sleeping in the stables
His actual father, King Maric never looked at him.
His half-brother only met once and was more interested in 'pretty swords'
Duncan saved him from a life of a Templer and the addiction to lyiuim. He supports Alistair and yet is stern to him. That is what he always wanted and Duncan was the first to give him the look of a father. Also the wardens where pretty close they become closer then kin after the joining.

Wynne does, as well, for a Cousland. <-- I actually just praised Wynne.TheLegendofWade wrote...
Hey, what Origin makes you kill an old friend/family or w/e when they've turned into a Ghoul?
[EDIT] Ah, nevermind, I see that it's the Dalish Origin.
Anyway, I agree that all companions are guilty of not caring about your feelings or your past. Which romanceable character actually digs deep into your person and past and feels sorry for you? Morrigan never shows sympathy. Leliana doesn't. Zevran? Nope. Alistar? He mentions one time that he feels sorry for you.
Out of all the characters, Alistar actually shows the most sympathy for you.
But yeah, Alistair also is the only one who says anything positive about your culture as a Dalish PC, something I'm glad for since I love the Alistair-Mahariel romance dynamic. He's the one in the Tamlen encounter that comes up to you and talks to you about it. It's probably game mechanic since he's a Warden and with you the longest, but for all that the Cous Cous players feel like you're getting the shaft, Alistair is the only NPC who ever makes my Dalish PC feel that someone gives a crap.
Leliana does, too, with her song- a nice moment as well. (Edit: But with her, it's kind of outweighed by the whole "hey it's really cool you haven't dragged off any women or children" routine.)

It is perfectly valid in my eyes that Alistair steps up in this case and objects to the idea of taking an Assassin along who has tried to kill you BOTH. Who knew at that point that he wouldn't try it again?Lord_Anthonior wrote...
For Morrigan beautiful, independent, hardened, powerful determined I understand, for Leliana I didn't expect it but ok, for Sten he killed a family so well, but when he said: "You are taking the assassin now?!" I thought : "*sigh* oh man you really complain just about everything! can anyone give him a candy or cookie to shut this kid up?"

She does, but it felt more self-centered to me. She's trying to pry information out of you. Alistair reacts so beautifully to a simple explanation of Dalish funeral practices. A lot of it is in the voice acting there, I think. Also his "I'm so sorry" after Tamlen.KnightofPhoenix wrote...

What Alistair experienced at the hands of "dear Uncle Eamon" was severe neglect. I'd be shocked if anyone who spent all or part of their childhood in that kind of situation didn't have issues. And while we're on the subject - where's the Eamon rage thread?

I don't blame him for yelling if you kill Isolde since he's clearly against the blood ritual. I do blame him for yelling if you kill Connor since he himself suggested it.
I understand him being upset and not happy about it, but he should've remembered that he was in favor of killing Connor before yelling at the PC. I don't know if I should blame this on poor writing to be honest.

That was probably based on your posts earlier lowering the discussion to complaints about physical appearances.
metalcraze, you seem to want to be taken seriously here. Can I make a suggestion. People might give you a bit more credibility if you make the effort to form sentences and use punctuation.

He can be blamed however for thinking that what Eamon thinks of him, is the most important thing at stake here.
And for once again throwing leadership back at you when you propose giving it to him, because he'd much rather complain and not make the decisions himself.

No, I think the Cunning dialogue after this reveals what's really going on. It's an emotional freak-out over Eamon. In other threads I've compared it to Jon Snow in Song of Ice and Fire, another bastard who's ill treated for that fact but who is more protective of his "trueborn" brothers and sisters than they are of each other. Alistair is protective of Eamon's family and dreads Eamon waking up to find that he- Alistair- killed his son or his wife. So when he says "I wouldn't normally suggest slaying a child," he's thinking like a reasoning Warden and templar. When he freaks out afterward, he's thinking like an orphan boy who revered Eamon and got treated like a piece of dirt on the bottom of his shoe.Zjarcal wrote...

Actually you're right there. The cunning dialogue is sort of a "call him out on his crap" option.
Gaider himself said in the thread that was referenced earlier that Alistair doesn't always act logically. I guess that was indeed the writers intent.
It still annoys me though.

I'm not sure! We kinda landed here and continued conversations we've been having back in the thread. But I've been over there discussing the fate of Schmooples. I don't want to kill Schmooples! I just want some quiet! :innocent:
