I'm just going to keep hoping for some level of non-skill upgrades. It's good to have individual characters, but at a point it breaks character. Someone mentioned Carver already. If he's a warrior expected to be up front in battle, I do hope he has something other than that shirt. I can't fathom that he as a character lacks enough intelligence to put on some kind of chain or plating. Now, as a refugee, I understand that everyone will likely be in clothing.
You're running, without enough time to put on some proper gear...But if we keep Carver for longer than that, I imagine he'd have to do some gearing up of his own. I can actually understand putting rogues in clothing, or light leather armor. They're supposed to be subtle and supportive. Varric stands from afar with Bianca, he doesn't need heavy armor holding back his ability to shoot bolts. Isabela needs to be light on her feet, and doesn't need to be weighed down in some leather suit. Mages, too, keeping a unique look from robes is understandable. I like Bethany's common-looking clothing.
I just don't want to see stagnant clothing throughout the 10 year timespan either. I like the idea of a few different companion outfits to keep them looking individual, or perhaps small visual upgrades to the armor. An example would be putting a breatplate or some form of armor over Carver. I also have a fear about other companions we haven't seen yet. What if we get a warrior companion who is completely stuck in some kind of armor, no matter where they are? Just as I don't see it as very practical to remain in clothing throughout the entirety of the game (at least for warriors), I also don't think someone should remain in armor.
I'm hoping characters will be dressed differently according to the situation. As of right now, I doubt that. However, if Bethany dons an actual mage robe if we visit the local mage tower, that would be nice for the sake of blending in. Also, if we're meeting someone highly important and we know about it (like in a Landsmeet) I'd love for the party to dress in their best. I loved changing party members in Origins to clothing for cutscenes in cities/towns, and then changing them back to armor when things got fighty.
No matter what happens, though, I can't wait to see DA2 in depth, in March.
